Trend Watch: The "return" of cute
By Tracy Miller

In the past couple of years, many scrapbook companies have been offering ever more sophisticated product lines. But I've noticed recently a lot of products that seem to embrace a whimsical cuteness. Of course, I'm not the first to notice this trend. Ali Edwards showed a number of "cute and cool" products in her "Studio A" column a couple of months ago. And I think the doodling trend that we see so often right now, feeds into this as well.

Of course, for many people, "cute" never left. Many companies have had success providing supplies for people who felt that pages about their kids should reflect the innocence of childhood. It's fun now to see those type of supplies done by different companies, sometimes with a little twist that adds a touch of sophistication. It's a great mix.

Some current product examples that come to mind are the Basic Grey frog paper, SEI's new Doodley-doo lines, and Rhonna Farrer's Scribbles line for boys. One that I'm particularly loving lately is Sassafras Lass. I did a layout with Sassafras Lass paper and Tia Bennet's 2Seas Digital Kit.

Supplies Needed:
1 horizontal 4x6 photo; 2 vertical 4x6 photos
Kraft Cardstock
Sassafras Lass Patterned Paper
2Seas Digital Kit
MOD Patterned Paper
2 Peas fonts, Basic,Teen, and Thursday Morning
Adobe Photoshop or similar program

Directions:
1. Open a 12x12 new canvas in Photoshop. Open Tia Bennet's 2Seas Kit "bubbles.png" Resize to about .5" wide (Image->Resize). Drag onto 12x12 canvas multiple times so that it makes a border about .25" from the edge. (If you do not have a wide format printer, you can do this on a 8 x 12 piece of paper and trim and mount on the edge of your layout.)
2. Mount photos on layout so that one vertical 4x6 is flush with the top edge, the horizontal photo is flush with the right hand side, and all three photos are flush with one another.
3. Open 2Seas Kit paper "waves.jpg." Crop to 4x6 and print on white cardstock. Cut into one 2x4" piece and one 4x4" piece. Mount on top and bottom of photo on left side.
4. Cut 1" strip of Sassafras Lass paper. Mount on leftt side of layout. Cut a 1x6" piece and mount it below horizontal photo.
5. Cut 1/4" strip of MOD paper. Mount on left side of layout. Cut and mount another strip on the bottom right.
6. Use 2Peas Basic & Thursday Morning fonts to create title. I did the title in photoshop, making each letter of "Funny Fish" a seperate layer so that I could manipulate their placement.
7. Print title on lined pattern paper and trim to about 2"x5." Mount above left hand photo.
8. Journal with 2Peas Teen font. Print on lined pattern paper. Trim and mount on layout.
9. Open 2Seas Digital Kit "goldfish_copy.png." Flip so that the fish is oriented to the opposite side (Image->Rotate Canvas ->Flip Horizontal). Resize to 2" across. Print and trim. Mount to layout in center of photos.
10. Open 2 Seas kit paper "fishies.jpg." Crop a 4x4" piece. Open "star.png" and resize to 1" high. Drag onto paper background. Print.
11. Cut out star and mount by journaling on layout.
12. Cut red star out of Sassafras Lass tag, outline with black pen, and mount to left of title.
