Classes : Make Mine Mini - Week 4 Summer Reading Log
By Shimelle Laine

Over the first half of 2009 I have held a completely appalling record at reading.  I've been in one of those fidgety phases where I needed to get things done and reading seemed to get the chop.  But I am determined to stop that in its tracks and I've picked out a set of books I am definitely going to read before the summer finishes!

I find that creating log books at the start of a project really helps me to see a goal right through to the end, so this book is now ready and waiting for me to finish a book and fill it with notes.  The Maya Road envelope books are perfect for something like this where you might want to stash some notes or other bits and pieces inside your mini.  Two of the four books I'm reading alongside some friends, so we've printed out a list of discussion questions for when we meet up.  One of my books is a reread and I actually had some notes from the first time I read it, so I can tuck that in the pocket and read them when I have finished to see if I noticed anything interesting on the reread.

For each book, I've filled out a library card with some notes and room for a start and finish date. (And you can download the library cards and print them out for this and other projects! Enjoy!) Then the envelopes just have one central embellishment, as I wanted to keep them quite sturdy for holding folded sheets of full-size paper.  The facing chipboard page has journaling paper for a summary of my notes when I finish the book -- you can write your own little book review!  And a quick sticker + rub-on for my verdict on each book.

If you want to add more than four books to your list, you can cut additional pages from paper or chipboard or just use one side of each page per book.  And then come back and tell me how you find the time to get all those books read so quickly!

If a reading log for yourself isn't quite right, then consider a reading log for a child or friend who loves (or needs encouragement) to read, a mini about your favourite books, four books you are proud to have read, four lessons you have learned from books... put your thinking cap on and I'm sure you'll find the angle that is just perfect for you.
