Classes : Digi 101 - January, 2010
By Erica Hernandez

Welcome to the 2010 Digi 101 Class!

I don't claim to be a digital expert by any stretch of the imagination. Everything I know is the result of googling and LOTS of trial and error. I know for certain that I don't necessarily achieve different effects by the most obvious or efficient way in every circumstance (like I said, trial and error!) Hopefully though, whether you are a complete novice to digital scrapbooking or somewhat proficient at navigating the different functions, you'll find something useful or inspiring during the course of this class. If nothing else, we can all benefit from the knowledge we can share on the Education Board each month. I encourage every one to participate in our discussions by asking questions and offering your own tips, tricks and ideas.

Here is a brief overview of what I plan to cover over the next twelve months:

  • January: Introduction
  • February: Organization
  • March: Transformation Basics and Selection Tools
  • April: Layer Modes and Styles
  • May: Text
  • June: Recoloring
  • July: Brushes
  • August: Masks
  • September: Photo Editing Basics
  • October: Advanced Techniques
  • November: Finding Your Style
  • December: Hybrid Techniques

Along with instruction and ideas, I'll provide a challenge each month to help you build your skills or expand on your creativity.

If you are brand new to digital scrapbooking and don't have a software preference yet you have a number of options. I use Photoshop Elements exclusively and recommend it highly (it often comes bundled with other software - I'm using version 5 as it came bundled with my Wacom tablet.) It doesn't offer the functionality of full version Photoshop but it does everything I need it to and at a fraction of the price. If you want to try it out before you purchase it, Adobe offers a free 30 day trial download from their site.

Another option is GIMP. GIMP is a free download that is set up very similarly to Photoshop Elements with essentially the same functionality. I have downloaded the most recent version so if you decide to go this route and have any questions that pertain to GIMP directly, please post to the Education Board and I will try to work through any GIMP issues with you.

Challenge: For our first challenge, I want you to create a basic layout using a free 2Peas kit. You can follow my sample (step by step instructions follow) or, select the kit of your choice and come up with your own design. You can find all of the free 2Peas kits here. Have fun and be sure to join us on the Education Board for follow up throughout the next month! Watch the instructional video's below or on youtube (part 1|part 2|part 3
