I am SOOOO excited that our theme for August is Digital Scrapbooking! I know there are a lot of scrapbookers who join me in my love for all things Photoshop, especially using Photoshop as a tool to create custom designed printed projects..

While I used to keep all my pages strictly digital, now I rarely do a 100% digital scrapbook page. I use my computer and software to create unique items for my paper pages or special projects like cards, tags and mini books...learning digital doesn't mean it has to stay on your screen. For me, that's the best part!! Photoshop and other photo editing programs are simply additional (and very powerful) tools to add to your creativity. Anything you can dream, you can create!! It's a creative freedom unlike anything I have experienced!! (Especially when you need some red polka dot paper at 4am:)

While the following instructions may be a little strange and difficult to follow if you are a beginner, rest assured that once you are comforable with Photoshop and know your way around the tools and the layers pallette, everything should be very easy to comprehend and duplicate!

To get started learning digital scrapbooking techniques, check out the Digital Scrapbooking section of 2peas: here you will find a library of tutorials and an active community of digital scrapbookers to help you on your way:)!!

Mini Book Instructions:

This mini-accordian book was pretty simple to make: I sized each of my pages at 4" sq. and printed it out on a sheet of 11"x17" cover stock that I purchased at my local office superstore.
I picked out 3 favorite photos and resized to 4" sq. Using the easy to follow directions in Rhonna's Vintage Photo Tool kit, I added some distressing to each of the photos and merged the layers. I opened up a new canvas in Photoshop sized at 4"H x 16"W and placed the 3 photos by dragging and dropping them into the canvas. I left the 3rd square area blank for journaling.

To create the journaling page portion of the mini-book, I drew a white solid rectangle with the rectangle tool, just covering up the open space. Then, I opened up one of the papers from the Vintage Label Paper kit in Photoshop and resized it to just a little bit over 4" sq. After dragging it and dropping it into the canvas, I positioned it at an angle at the lower half of the journaling page. Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, I simply selected the portion of the paper that overlapped onto the other pages and hit delete to clean up the page.

Next I added the journaling. To add a distressed look to the main title, I used Rhonna's Vintage Photo Tool kit again, applying the effect only to the title by using a layer mask.

Once I had everything situated where I liked it, I printed it out and used my bone folder to make a clean fold for each page. To add some additional stability to the book, I added 4x4" squares of heavy cardstock pattern paper to the back of each page and used my scissors to trim off any extra paper after folding. Then, I finished the book by stamping dates and numbers onto the pages with a numbering stamp and chalk ink.

Postcard Instructions:

To make the postcard, first you need to open a new canvas sized to 4x6". Find a lace border image you like from Rhonna's Peachy Keen Brush set, drag and drop it into Photoshop, resize it to 4" wide and recolor. Then, drag and drop the small ledger label from Tia's Illustrated Journaling Helpers kit, also resize to preference and drag into the postcard canvas. To create the distressed look, use the Burn tool and soft brush the edges of the ledger label. Add text to the label using the text tool and change the layer style to "Multiply". Reposition over the center middle of the lace border image.

I applied some effects to the photo before adding it to the postcard by duplicating the layers and using different layer styles to blow out the sky to nearly all white. Then, after merging all of the layers into one, I dragged and dropped the photo into the postcard canvas. Once it was situated and resized to fit, I applied a layer mask and brushed away the sky using a soft black brush to blend the photo into the white background.

The last step is to add the main journaling block using the text tool and a small 5pt typewriter style font, and copying and pasting a favorite quote onto the page. Once the postcard it finished, I printed it onto white cardstock, trimmed to size with a paper trimmer and rounded the corners with a corner rounder punch.

Vintage Beach Tag Instructions:

This was probably one of my favorite parts of this project, printing a photo onto a manilla shipping tag! I have seen this idea in lots of projects- printing onto a variety of items from tags to fabric, twill ribbon and more...

It's so simple! The dimensions of the tags are right on the container, so all you have to do is resize a photo to fit into the dimensions: for this project it was 2.375"W x 4.75"H. Once you have your photo to size, print it out onto a piece of cover stock or heavy paper (Tip: use the fast draft color setting on your printer to conserve ink during this step)...then, using double stick tape, tape the tag exactly on top of the printed photo paper and re-feed it through your printer, this time using regular print settings (be sure to remove the string from the tag first:). When it's finished printing, just peel the tag off and you have your finished piece! Voila!

Vintage Label Instructions:

For this part of the project, I used white label sticker paper to print the label and then cut it out with scissors.

I used my Swank Labels kit, picked out the style I liked best for the project and opened it up in Photoshop. Then, I resized it to fit onto the jar, which was approximately 1.75" wide. I recolored the label by selecting the black frame with the Magic Wand tool and then applying a color fill layer on top of the label layer, then linked the layers and merged together.

To create the fill, I deleted the white inside of the label and then dropped in the ledger panel from the Illustrated Journal Helper kit- made sure the ledger layer was below the frame layer, selected the inside of the label with the magic wand tool, and then selected the layer that held the ledger panel, chose Select>Inverse and then Ctrl+V to delete the extra paper from the panel. To create some aging to the ledger paper, I burnished the edges with the Burn tool and a soft brush.

The last step was to add some age to the label frame using Rhonna's Vintage Photo Tool kit and linking the texture to the frame only. Then, I added the title layer to the top and chose the layer style "Hard Light" to give the typeface some burnished opacity. Then, when it was finished, I printed it out onto the sticker paper and applied to the jar; which contains a feather, some rocks and shells and sand from the beach in Westport where John likes to surf.

As you can see, each project only contains a few simple steps. Don't forget to check out the Tutorials in the Digital Scrapbooking section of 2peas if you need additional help in completing this project or something similar.

Thanks for letting me share this project with you!!!
