I am thrilled and honored to be a guest designer for this month's Design School. Using the hierarchy principal of deisgn, I created a layout featuring three years of first day of school photos. Visual hierarcy is the idea of emphasizing an element within your design to help convey your theme.
I used this principal in a couple of ways. First, I created hierarchy with the size of my photos. I wanted to emphasize this year's school photo, so it is the larger of the three. I also used size to create hierarchy in the title. The main theme of the layout is that the pictures were all taken on the first day of school, so that part of my title is larger.
Another example of hierarchy in my layout is repetition. I used three numbered circles on my layout. I put one on each photo to indicate the grade that my son was entering into that year. This emphasizes the theme of my layout.
