Not a bad job at all Travis. What lens were you using? Of course, the main thing with sports shots is getting in close as you can. It helps if you can position yourself on one end of the field or the other and shoot that end rather than being in the middle and trying to cover the whole field KWIM? Soccer is one of the harder sports to shoot IMO. It's really difficult to anticipate the action vs. football or baseball or some other sports. Not to mention you have the big field to deal with and you had older kids which means faster action vs. younger kids and more predictable slower action. I shot my first high school soccer this year and coupled with the games being at night and not being as familiar with the action, it was a tough shoot. Lots more bad shots than good the first game. I agree with Lexi about opening up your aperture to blur the background a bit more. That way the subjects will stand out more. Sports shooting is one of those things you just need to keep at but it can be really satisfying in the end when you get that killer shot.
The key with shooting my boys has been to learn to anticipate the action and zone focus in advance. In baseball this is a bit easier than soccer or basketball though. The more determined facial expressions you capture, the better I think. Just adds to the emotion of the shot. I think you did a nice job of capturing the action. On the wider shots, I would open up the aperture a little more to help blur some of the background distractions. Might let you get a little higher shutter speed to help with motion blur, too.
It's fun to try something different. Good action shots. TFS

Project - Shooting the Shot by travis_cooper posted 03/15/08 at 12:13 PM Galleries: Photography This is my second attempt at sports. I wasn't extremely happy with my results, but they are better than the first time. It is fun to get out and try something different. My nephew plays for the high school jv team so I'll probably go to more games and get more practice. |
