Project - NSD 3 PM LAYOUT: Read
Happy National Scrapbook Day, Peas!
This layout was created for the NSD event here at Two Peas, where a new garden girl project will be released each hour until 7 pm central. How cool is that?
Here begins my confession: I love wood veneers. Like, a lot. Like I have jars dedicated to them in my scrap space. Nothing else in the room really gets that much attention, except my veneers. And maybe my washi basket. So what is a girl to do when given the opportunity to show off some veneer? Combine the wood & the washi. It's the best of both of my scrapbook worlds!
For this layout I started with a woodgrain (which will always love even if you tell me it has gone out of style) background. I took a mask from Studio Calico and used it with paint to make a some imperfect circles. I originally used a tan color paint, but it looked wrong so I went over it with a bright yellow. It turned out messy, but I just went with it.
The story in the photo is of a moment during a homeschool day where big brother was reading to little brother. I love to read so seeing this just made me smile big time. There is a bit of pink in the photo so I used that as my excuse, I mean, opportunity to add in a bit of pink with a pink polka dot washi tape border.
The main embellishments of the page are those super cool elongated hexagon veneers. I used them along the bottom to create an almost funky border. I personally like the natural color of wood veneers and often just leave them plain, but there really is so much you can do with them! These particular veneers are a great size to add something to them…so I did that with various washi tapes. I simply laid a piece of tape on teh veneer and torn it off. With most washi tape you don't even have to use scissors to trim it to fit–just pull the tape along the side and it will rip perfectly. Smooth the edge with your finger and done!
With a few of the hexagons I added some stamps to them. It was fun to dig through my stamps and see what would fit. The Sn@p line by Simple Stories has some great stamps that fir perfectly, like I used here. I stamped in black ink to tie in the black title. I liked how the black stamped images on the veneers meshed with the colorful pattens in the ones with washi tape.
I wanted to play around some more and decided to put together a graphic card. Dude. Have you checked out the gold washi in the store? It has an awesome metallic sheen to it and made it look almost like metallic paint on the veener. Way cool. Those little black stamped triangles from the sharp backdrop stamp set by Lawn Fawn made my day. It kind of reminded me of modern confetti (is there eve such a thing?) falling so I went with a “dude. let's party” sentiment. Of course I added some typing and sewing, which I always do, and that pop of color from Heidi Swapp's color pop line. The sheen of the varnish in the yellow paper and in the gold washi made it feel party-esque, too.
And with that I will end my love of wood veneer confession and remind you that they are part of the special NSD sale ;)
Happy shopping and happy National Scrapbook Day!
