Winner of Quoth The Raven Quest #32 ‘Raving Ravens’.
Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s poem ‘The Raven’.
Chair & books: Sitting reading ‘forgotten lore’ & movement of chair in front of the bird.
Skull: December’s association with forces of darkness & the suggestion the character was reading books of the occult or black magic.
Curtains: ‘Rustling of each purple curtain’
Layered Vintage Cabinet Die Cuts: Conflicting representations depict character’s conflicting desires. It is the Window at which Raven is rapping, the Chamber door at which Raven is first rapping & which it perches above, a lover’s archway adorned with flowers representing his love of Lenore & a Graveyard Monument to Edgar Allen Poe representing the Raven’s association as a messenger from the ‘Plutonian Shore’ / Underworld .

Slope of stone as sinks into ground & Epitaph ‘Here lies sanity’: The main characters descent into madness
Ravens around grave: Answer to the statement ‘On the morrow he will leave me…’ to which the raven replies ‘Nevermore’.
Glass vials: ‘Balm of Gilead’ (resin used to heal the character after his loss) & ‘Nepenthe’ (drug of forgetfulness).
Mirror (into which the raven looks & which we can see his reflection): Self-deprecating questioning of the raven by the main character.
Scratchy script Title: Claw marks of the Raven (N.B: not coated with a protective spray before adding Ranger’s Glossy accents, to intentionally cause a slight red bleed, representing the hurt the character feels in his heart every time the Raven utters the answer ‘Nevermore’).

How It was Made:
After adhering together texture was added by stamping over with modelling Paste using a script background rubber stamp & crackling background stamp. Black gesso was painted over everything, except the mirror, title & Edgar Allen Poe’s Image) & extra texture was created through the layering of brush stokes & use of a palette knife . Finally Gilding wax was applied to give the piece a faux bronze look.
