with a shot like this you want to change your aperture pretty high, somewhere between f11 and f22. that should make all the kids clear. it looks like the focus fell on the birthday candles and cake.. are you using focus lock? this will help you get the focus where you want, then you can recompose the shot.

If you use this lense on f11, it will make your subjects pretty clear. If you want to try getting the blurry background, you want to stop that number down pretty low to about 2.8 to 1.4, the smaller that number, the less area is going to be clear and sharp, so it will be also be harder to focus, but the end result is worth it!

I took these at my Grandson's 6th Birthday party in a Bowling Alley and was disappointed in a lot of them. With I was using my Rebel XT, with speedlite flash. Don't remember settings. I think it was auto. I was pointing at the Birthday boy in the middle and the pictures ended up with his blurry and the closes boy clear. Please just me some CC.
