Grab your camera and join us for this week's photography challenge. This week, your challenge is to capture something smooth. Smooth like the glaze on pottery or the surface of a calm canal, or any other way you might interpret the word smooth through your viewfinder!

You may find a shallow depth of field helps convey the smooth factor in your images. On an SLR camera, that means shooting at one of the widest apertures your lens offers. If that's new for you, try shooting in Aperture Priority mode and dialling down till the number doesn't go any lower. (I snapped both of these at 1.4 on a 50mm lens, but you don't have to have that low an aperture number to achieve a smooth and shallow depth of field.) If you have a point and shoot, this effect is limited but you can achieve a smoother look in macro than in your fully automatic mode. Give it a try and be sure there's plenty of distance between your subject and the background and you should see a smoother, more blurred background to your image.
