Challenge - Photography Challenge: Collections
by Jill Sprott
We in the scrapbooking world often joke about our hoarding habits, but collecting is a whole different story. It involves sifting through the chaos and seeking patterns within it. It's about locating, organizing, displaying/storing, and holding dear that which makes our heads and hearts happy. We all collect something, I'm sure. Since I was a kid, I've collected stamps, though not in any systematic way. A hard-core philatelist I am not. I'm drawn to their pretty colors and designs, to their histories and their meanings. Whenever I see a stamp on an envelope, I tear it off and save it in a collection that I've amassed through the years.
THE CHALLENGE: Photograph a collection, whatever it may be – stamps, books, cookie cutters, watches, wooden spoons, sunglasses, troll dolls, vinyl records, old Tiger Beat posters…oh, the possibilities!
For this challenge, I decided to focus on my “international” stamp collection, which includes stamps from Ghana, Nigeria, Malaysia, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines, Japan, Russia, Spain, Italy, Brazil, and other countries. Since there are so many, and I couldn't just choose a few (since each of them is a little treasure to me), I decided to take a collage approach to the photo, arranging the stamps side by side. This is exactly how I like to look at them. There are other approaches to photographing collections, however. I'm not sure if you've ever seen Lisa Congdon's “Collection a Day” [collectionaday2010.blogspot.com] blog, but she takes incredible photos of her collections. Even if you don't fancy yourself a collector, her photos offer something for everyone.
If you're interested in joining in the challenge this week, upload your submission by next Friday at 11:59 PM CST for a chance to be entered into a drawing to win a $5 Two Peas gift certificate. The winner will be posted on the Two Peas blog [twopeasinabucket.typepad.com]. Good luck! I can't wait to see your collections!
