With this weekend being the Fourth of July, I could not pass up doing a themed layout and picks. I hate to admit that it has probably been about 10 years since I have actually done a Fourth of July themed layout. I am not sure why I have stayed away from this particular theme, but I stay away from birthdays as well, I think there might be too much pressure to make them perfect. But I gave it a good try this week.
I selected the Old Glory collection [twopeasinabucket.com] from We R Memory Keepers to start. It has been a popular collection! There are a lot of patterns in this collection, with most of being old traditional in style and appearance. They are old world in feel, I get the sense of America's beginnings from them. There are a lot of stars and stripes and titles and fun, but busy patterns here. Some of the papers have glitter treatment and 2 of them are solid with stitched borders on them. The rest are a double sided cardstock weight paper. I like the ones that have the quadrant on the back of 4 of the other patterns in smaller size.
Also in this collection are 3 sets of stickers, one being an embossed cardstock sticker, with titles, icons, border and more. Two layered chipboard stickers are also included, one with titles and one with icons, photo corners, journaling spots, etc. I ended up using the border and the stars from the embossed sticker set. There is also a nice set of embellishments, with a 4x6 paper pad, meant for people to be able to use it in the 4x6 pocket page protector layouts, where you combine several photos with a couple of patterned papers or journaling blocks in some of the pockets. I used the flag one on my layout and cut around it to make it more of a die cut. There is a nice set of glittered brads, with 2 blue colors, a cream and red.
I also used the glitter sticker border. There are 2, one red with stars and one blue. I was leaning a lot towards the red in this layout. I also selected the red Creative Cafe journaling tag [twopeasinabucket.com] to add more red.
I selected the Basic Grey Kraft Basics papers [twopeasinabucket.com] to go with this layout, to coordinate with all of the colored papers in the Old Glory Collection. I chose the ones that have white on kraft, rather than those that have black on kraft.
I also wanted to have a wider range of blues, as the only blue in the Old Glory collection is a more light country blue. I wanted to create a bigger gradient of color, so I worked in a few pieces of paper from the Basic Grey Oliver collection [twopeasinabucket.com]. There are actually several different papers that worked out really well for this layout. I liked that there was a dark navy blue and then a few darker patterns as well as some distressed solids that would coordinate.
The letter stickers [twopeasinabucket.com] I used this week are from the Oliver Collection as well. They have the aged red sticker and then the littler one is a dark navy blue. Perfect!
Also in my picks this week are the Patriotic Bingo cards [twopeasinabucket.com] from Jenni Bowlin, which I had never used before and have now decided I must use them more often.
And lastly, I picked some of the Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists [twopeasinabucket.com]. Thanks to those of you who gave me suggestions the last time I tried to use them, I did better this time spraying them on my layout and getting the effect I was looking for. I made sure to have a paper towel handy and dabbed off the excess right away. My papers did curl anyways, but with all of the additional product I put on the right side, it worked itself flat and the left side I adhered to a piece of cardstock for now and will probably end up keeping it attached into the album page protector as well.
I did some sewing on the layout, the banner is sewn on, so that the triangles can be lifted slightly, as well as all kinds of random stitches here and there. I think that the style and feel of Old Glory lent itself well to a little bit of sewing. :)
