Hello Stamping Peas!
I was wondering whether you use mists and sprays, like Walnut Ink, Perfect Pearls mists, or Glimmer Mists?
If so, what color backgrounds do you like to use with your mists and sprays?
I have been doing some experimenting, and I've found that I can get very different results by just switching up the paper:
(Also side question: What size tags do you use? I usually use #6 tags, but I recently got some #8 tags. A sample of each shown in the Glimmer Mist Sampler above.)
Link up your mists and sprays projects and tell us what color background/paper you used to get your results!
Can't wait to get inspired by your projects with mists and sprays and your color choices! |

This Boho Butterfly ATC (58th) was made using the Glimmer Mists on kraft that I showed in my sampler.
Anyone else use mists and sprays? I'd love to see other examples! |

Anne, your posts sent me looking through my gallery for pieces I had sprayed. Almost every time I was using Stamp Zia Watercolor Sprays on 140-lb. hot press watercolor paper. There are lots of examples of that in my gallery. You can see a couple on the Tilda Card here and the backgrounds here.
I did find an example where I used the sprays on mulberry paper to create a resist. Batik Resist on Mulberry Paper.
Here's one where I sprayed with Adirondack Color Wash Sprays on glossy cardstock. Check out the first tag.
This one is a bit different since I started out by brayering ink onto glossy cs. Then I misted it with water and sprinkled it with salt.
Salt Technique
The only time I have used tags is when we were doing the Retake on Thinking Inking Challenges. I used Avery Shipping Tags, 4 3/4" x 2 3/8." Among those tags, there are several more examples of using ink and water.

Anne and Daria, I love all your projects! I have some cards I made using the sprays. Will look through my stash and upload some tomorrow.

Fun thread Anne! And a great sample. I'll look through my gallery later and link some cards.
I have some of the Adirondack colour washes, which I got years ago. But, generally I mix my own mists with Perfect Pearls, Distress ink reinkers and water. I like that I can mix any colour I want, and I never run out. Also, mists are very difficult to get hold of here, and pretty expensive.
I am not familiar with the sizes of tags that you use, but usually use tags that are about 3 x 6 1/4 inches (quick translation from centimetres). I think it is the same size Tim Holtz uses. They are bigger than the tags we used for the Retake of Thinking Inking. I also have Tim's tag die, I love that die and use it a lot. Makes it so quick to cut tags from other types of paper - I epecially like watercolour paper or glossy cardstock for this. Love making tags. Since the retake on Thinking Inking, I have continued to make tags and keep them on a ring as inspiration. Sometimes I pop them on a card or back them with a second tag and send as a card. |

Thank you so much for starting this thread and for all of the samples that have been shared. Anne - I am going to be trying this technique- hopefully today - I will have to create a new space to work on - but I love this technique. I think I have all of the items - just have to play and see.
I will share (maybe).
I may be asking questions from time to time. |

I guess I like how sprays and mists can make a piece look so individual and artistic. I'm having great fun seeing what everyone shares! Thank you! |

Oh ... and feel free to ask questions!
Tip #1: I have found that I don't always like the way a sprayed / misted background looks until I stamp over top of it. Sometimes I will take a clear set and hold it over top, so I can get an idea of what it will look like stamped. And I might try different sets until I find something I like.
Tip #2: If I am dipping into ink, I usually dip twice. Once doesn't always cover completely and doesn't seem to have as much visual interest as twice. But three or more times the colors start to get muddy.
Anyone have spray / mist tips to share? |

Great tips Anne! I often don't like a misted piece until I have stamped over it.
Does anyone else struggle with red mists? I love to use red on my cards, but I have messed up quite a few pieces with misting or splattering red on them and it turns out looking like blood splatters. And I keep doing it, especially around Christmas cardmaking time. The other day I managed to remember and stop myself just in time. |

I looked for some misted pieces, but I must have sent the cards already. I am looking forward in doing some new pieces. Hope to tomorrow.

Oh no! I wouldn't like it too much if the red looked like blood splatters! That is not the kinda mood one wants to create with a holiday card! (At least not anyone I know!)
I would suggest maybe using a burgundy instead for a holiday mist? Or using more than one color of mist, like a red, orange, and yellow, to create fall colors. |

Did you see Kristina's video from Two Peas' 14 Days of Tricks and Treats that was about mists and sprays? It's 8 1/2 minutes...

She does use red sprays / mists in a couple of places... |

I got out my sprays today and had a great time playing. Here are some pieces I did and a Christmas card I made with one of them. Now I have a good stack of misted backgrounds to use. Thanks, Anne, for getting this discussion going. It is always fun to get out things that I haven't done in awhile and play.

I found a good video about how to use Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists today, and thought I'd share it: How to use Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists
It has some good tips, such as how to fix your sprayer if it gets clogged. |

Yes, I have a tip:
Don't be stingy with the mists!
I recently have gotten into mists, and I find myself being a conservative mist-er. I know I have to stop, but they are not cheap if you want to have several colors to work with. I can't help myself, I don't want to use them up.
Maybe this weekend I will challenge myself to come up with something. I just bought a cute stencil I can try out.

Good tip, Furry!
And you reminded me... I have some masks and stencils that I don't use much... maybe I need to get a few out and play. Hoping I can find some time soon! |

I haven't gotten to play yet, but it is on my to do list. I found a box to do my spraying in and have found my mists, stencils, also thinking of using die cuts from my sizzix or cricut (have to use that darn cricut for something).
All of your tutorials have been helpful. |

Hi, Michelle! If you get any mists, I'd love to see how you use them!
I am hoping to get some time soon to play again with mine! |

Anne - I finally got up enough nerve to try the mists that I have been hoarding for some time.
Here are two samples that I did over the week end.
They are not projects yet, but just papers with spraying.
The wrinkled cling wrap one is 8 1/2 x 11 and the glossy paper one is 4 x 6 - I am thinking about how to use them.
I think in the future I will do the 8 1/2 x 11 as a rule of thumb so that I have the option of cutting more than one tag or card from the same as I don't know how to recreate what I produced.
Had fun and will be doing more of this. Am going to use the colors I have before I invest in more. Thanks for this thread.

I made a cool background using Glimmer Mists and plastic cling wrap.
And I turned it into a card: You Rock Birthday (shows card and original background)
I really like the way the technique concentrates the glimmer. |

Anne, thank you for the links. I watched all of them. I love that background technique in the last video, and I picked up some tips in the other ones as well.
I love the samples that have been shared. I left comments in the gallery.
More than one person has mentioned how much better the backgrounds look when they've been stamped. I want to add that they even look better unstamped when they are cut into pieces. I have some backgrounds that I didn't think were very good, but when I cut them into pieces, they made the best mats and backgrounds. I have one ATC piece that is soooo pretty, and I can't seem to reproduce it so I just keep it. Hopefully, someday I'll figure out how to make it again. Until then, I'm saving it!
