Woohoo!! My 2Peas order totals just went down about 10% because I no longer have to pay sales tax.

Because....?
It wasn't explained in the email. There were a few states that started getting charged sales tax within the last year or so.

Actually I just re-read the email from 2Ps and it does say this:
Two Peas in a Bucket is no longer required to collect sales tax on orders shipped to Arkansas, Arizona, Michigan, Texas and Washington. How awesome is that? It's like getting a 5-10% discount on every order from now on!

I don't know if this is really a good thing. My understanding of AR sales tax law is that if you don't pay "sales tax" you are required to "self-declare" and pay "use tax". Use tax is at the same rate as sales tax. Now, I don't exactly know how the AR Dept of Finance would know about our 2Peas purchases but I do know they have a unit that regularly surfs the internet to find businesses that have not filed with the Sales & Use Tax Division.

Um, you still have to pay - but you are now required by law to keep track of your internet purchases and self-report them on your taxes at the end of the year. I personally find it easier to pay when I purchase, but I am now in a self-reporting state as well - so I keep a log in excel so I can keep track of the taxes I need to pay/report when I file my taxes.

Lucky you. I found out the hard way that Amazon now charges sales tax in California. If I knew it was changing I would have placed my order sooner along with several more oh well. I just got a 8% increase. It is weird that some states that used to have to pay no longer do that is strange. I thought it was all going the other way.

I'm in Calif as well. What's really irritating is that in my city the sales tax is 7.5% but my online orders are 8%.

I thought you were going to say because you moved to Oregon. Or one of the other 4 states with no sales tax.

Yup, Amazon now charges sales tax to ship to PA too. Basically, if they have a warehouse in your state they are now required to charge sales tax.

I actually believe that we should be paying sales tax on all online purchases. I know, you're thinking, "What is wrong with that woman?" Online shopping with no sales tax is increasingly reducing a revenue stream to states that is used for valuable services. I will admit that I often buy online because of the convenience but paying sales tax would not change that.

Although I don't shop at 2Peas, I do a lot of on-line shopping from US sites and part of the reason why is because I don't pay sales tax. I live in Canada where I pay 13% on everything so not being charged sales tax is beautiful! The way that I look at it, not paying tax pays the shipping costs!

If your state collects sales tax, you still have to pay the tax - you just have to keep track of it yourself. That goes for any online shopping.

This is exactly how I feel and I, too, keep track in an excel sheet. I also find it easier to pay as I purchase than to give the tax accountant that lump sum # at tax time. My DH notices it when it's declared at tax time but wouldn't really notice if it was included with my order total.
