I'll second forrestmom on "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane". It's a truly magical book. LOVE it.

Check out Nancy Tillman's books as well. They are wonderful.

My girls were fans of books by Kevin Henkes - Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, Sheila the Brave, Julius the Baby of the World, etc. My youngest daughter loved all of the books in the Pigeon series by Mo Willems - Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is first in the series.

"The world absolutely needs Woo Girls. If there were no Woo Girls, there would be no 'Girls Gone Wild,' no bachelorette parties, no Las Vegas poolside bars. All of the things that you hold dearest would be gone. The souvenir shot-glass industry would collapse; so would the body-glitter industry -- and, the stretch Hummer rental industry. Tiny cowboy hats would be worn only by tiny cowboys. And when 'Brown- Eyed Girl' would come up on the jukebox, all you would hear ... would be silence .... and 'Brown-Eyed Girl.' But who would 'woo,' ? Who would 'woo'? Would you? Would you ... 'woo'?" B.Stinson

Audrey/Don Wood books

If I was looking for holiday themed books, I would include
Mercer Mayer: Merry Christmas Mom and Dad
Christmas in Noisy Village (Astrid Lindgren)
It's Christmas, David (David Shannon)
Merry christmas, Amelia Bedelia
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Barbara Robinson)
a Jan Brett book (The Hat, The Mitten, really any of them)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

We also used to read books that brought in other cultures and traditions:
Las Posadas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Ramadan, St Nicholas, etc.

The books that are most popular with the younger crowd at my elementary school library are:

The Very Fairy Princess - Andrews
The Princess and the Pea - Childs
Pinkalicious and all the others
Billy and Blaze books - Anderson
Marley picture books - Grogan
No David - Shannon
Bad Kitty series
Ivy and Bean series
Jan Brett books with their beautiful pictures

My favorite Christmas story of all time is Holly and Ivy. I used to read it to my girls every year.

This is an awesome idea!

My kids liked:
Arthur books
Clifford books
Eric Carle books
Bearenstein bears
Richard Scary books

Don't forget some non-fiction books about animals, places, people, how things work, etc. they are interested in. We all tend to buy more fiction books, but it is still good for kids to be exposed to non-fiction books as well.

You didn't say how old the kids are so I hope these aren't too young for them.

My oldest daughter loved
May I Please Have A Cookie?.

She also loved any Harry the Dog books, Corduroy (the bear), or Curious George.

My youngest is just starting to read and is falling in love with these characters, too.

All of my kids loved "Just in Case You Ever Wonder" by Max Lucado. It is a book for small children. I read that book to each of them every night. As a matter of fact, when we moved my oldest son (college freshman) into his dorm this past August, I left a brand new copy of it on his pillow (under his blanket) as a surprise for him to find that night when he went to bed. He really appreciated it! It was his first night living away from home, and I know he was feeling just a little bit lonely. Now, of course, he hardly ever comes home! Great idea, and enjoy them while you can.

Many of the above, as well as Knuffle Bunny (or anything by Mo Willems), Corduroy, and the Pete the Cat books.

For holiday themed books, Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) designed the sets for the Pacific Northwest Ballet's Nutcracker ages ago. There's a hardcover book with his illustrations that is just magical. I just checked Amazon and it was re-released at the end of October. I added one to my cart to get for my own DD.

Sandra Boynton books
Skippy Jon Jones
Goodnight Moon
Harry the Dirty Dog
Knuffle Bunny series

At their age I would highly recommend books that rhyme like the Boynton books.

What a great way to start their library too! DS16 still has all of his Boynton books stashed away.

You don't say how old your girls are, so not really sure that these would be age appropriate. But, I cannot say enough about Patricia Polacco. Oh. My. Word.

I discovered her book "The Bee Tree" when my girls were little, and have been a fan ever since.

These are some of our favorites. Just the tip of the iceberg.

The Keeping Quilt
Chicken Sunday
Thunder Cake
Rechenka's Eggs
Emma Kate
Thank You, Mr. Falker
Mrs. Katz and Tush

Her watercolor artwork is amazing. She captures so much emotion in the faces of her characters. Anyone else a fan of hers?

ETA Okay, just saw that you've got teeny little ones. So, of her books, I'd recommend "G is for Goat" which is an alphabet book. But, do look into the others for when your kids are older. I promise you won't be disappointed. I love them every bit as much as my kids. C.S. Lewis once said, "...a children's story which is only enjoyed by children is a bad children's story." I could not agree more.

When my son was younger (kindergarten-ish) one of his bedtime books was "Roxaboxen". It surprised me when we were talking a few months ago that he does not remember some of the funny or silly books that we used to read, but he still absolutely remembers that book as one of his favorites (he's 25 now, so it was a while ago that we last read that one!) It's a very mellow book, good for settling kids down before bed
