Hi
My son and his friend are coming to the USA next year for a basketball camp during your summer, as part of the registeration I have to say what grade he is. We have different grading here in New Zealand so I would appreciate some help. My son's birthday is September 1999 and his friend in December 1998. Can you tell me with grade these boys would be in 2013 if they were to be schooling in the USA.
Thanks for your help. |

Your son would be in eighth grade, and his friend in ninth where I live. It's going to vary from state to state. Our grading system is the same in Canada, but we have different entry cutoff birthdates (ours is December 31). I think a lot of states, his friend would be in eighth, as well.
Edit: Corrected my grades. |

Depends on the state since they have different cut off dates for starting school. In Delaware it would be 7th and 8th. I believe California would be 8th and 9th. HTH |

I would probably say they would both be in the equivalent of the 9th grade in 2013. At least in my state, you have to be 5 by Sept 1st to be admitted to kindergarten
His friend would turn 5 in Dec 2003, then his friend would be able to start school Sept 2004. Your son would be able to start Sept 2005 since he wouldn't be 5 until after Sept 1st 2004 (but see note below)
Son's friend
2004 - kindergarten
2005 - first grade
2006 - second grade
2007 - third grade
2008 - fourth grade
2009 - fifth grade
2010 - sixth grade
2011 - seventh grade
2012 - eight grade
2013 - ninth grade
So he would be in 9th and your DS in 8th BUT if a child's birthday barely misses the Sept 1st deadline, they can take a test of sorts to see if they can be admitted early. Therefore, it is very likely they would be in the same grade.
So.... If the boys are in the same grade in NZ, then I would say they are both in the 9th grade but... If they are in different grades in NZ, then I would say DS is in 8th and friend is in 9th
For the sake of the camp registration, I don't think you would have to be 100% precise so would just state they will both be 9th graders in 2013 |

Not necessarily. Southern hemisphere school years are on a different schedule, usually starting late Jan/Early Feb and ending in December. So kids born in eg: August and December of the same year would start school together in Australia/New Zealand, but would likely be in different year levels in the US. |

I would agree with this. Are they physically about the same? If so, I would sign them up for the same grade on the camp forms. That way, they can be in the same group. Some camps split by grade and the boys might be on different schedules which kind of takes away the fun of going to camp together.

In Illinois, where the school cut-off is September 1:
9/99 - just finishing 7th grade - sometimes called a rising 8th grader
12/98 - just finishing 8th grade - sometimes called a rising 9th grader.
In New York, where the school cut-off is December 1 both boys would be rising 9th graders.

My dd's birthday is July 30, 1999, so her bday is very close to your son's bday. She is currently in 7th grade, but she is old enough to be in 8th (she made our cut-off by one day, but since she was so close, we decided to wait). Your son would not make our cut-off date so he would be in 7th right now (although some parents do choose to wait a year even when their kids make the cut-off by a month or two, so he could even be in 6th). I would say 7th is a good solid bet though. That means that in the fall of 2013 he would be in 8th. Since his friend is a year older, he would most likely be in 9th grade in fall of 2013. Since summer activities are usually looking for what grade students will be in in the fall of that year, I would say 8th for your son and 9th for his friend.

Where I live our cut off is September 30th. Both boys would be entering 9th grade in the fall of 2013 here.

Where I live the cut off date is Aug. 31. So they would be in 8th and 9th grade.

Shouldn't you slide that date by half a year?
A child here usually begins kindergarten at age 5 and 1st grade at age 6. The school year runs roughly from the first of September through the end of June. (Just for simplicity's sake.)
The dates don't matter, since these boys are on a completely different calendar cycle. They'll either be half a year ahead or half a year behind whatever the Americans would be.

In our state the cut off is August 1st.
The Sept 1999 boy would currently be a 7th grader and the Dec '98 boy would currently be an 8th grader.

Only if they actually began school in late Aug/early Sept, but their school year doesn't follow that schedule.
Whatever month your school year begins, OP, would be our late Aug/early Sept. If the child is 5 before or for.... let's say a month after..... Sept. 1 (not adjusted for your calendar), that child would be in kindergarten in 2004, 1st grade in 2005.....8th grade in 2012.
If your school year begins March, then your child would have been in Kindergarten in 2005/6, 1st grade in 2006/7..... 7th grade in 2012/13.

Can you contact the camp? They should be able to help international registers with that. |

In our district, your son would be a 7th grader currently and his friend an 8th grader. I don't think it matters what the difference is in school calendars between there and here, because she asked what grade they would be in here based on age.

December 1998 would be 8th grade.
September 1998 could be 9th grade but he would be one of the youngest. |
