From garage sales, consignment sales/shops, goodwill.
Just shirts and pants and costs. No bras or undies or anything. |

Yes in fact my Ann Taylor Loft jeans I have on right now are from the awesome thrift store in my area. My wardrobe is about 50% from that store and my 3 kids are at about 75% including winter coats.
I will say I am picky about what I will buy and go once a week to slowly build their wardrobes. |

of course. I don't do a lot of thrift store/second hand clothing shopping, but only because I've yet to find a place I can depend on for good clothes at good prices. Every once in a while I stumble upon something good and it's worth it. |

Yep. Losing weight and going through a size in a month gets expensive. I've found area stores that aren't huge, well organized and carry designer brands. I frequent them every week and buy a piece or two. Then I sell stuff back to them to buy new sizes. |

I'd say about 50% of my wardrobe is from thrift stores. I'm partial to Deseret Industries in Utah and the west, so when I visit my kids in Utah I generally go on at least one good shopping spree. Since I moved to New Jersey, I've been frequenting the Goodwill store, but find their prices really high, about half of retail, which is out of my price range.
I'm also picky about what I buy- outerwear, tops, skirts are favorites. I rarely buy pants or anything fitted. I've also been pretty successful in finding shoes and boots, but they have to be new or nearly new.
My 21 year old daughter buys everything she wears except undies at thrift shops, my older daughter wouldn't be caught dead in one! |

Heck yeah! I have gotten some BEAUTIFUL things that way that otherwise would have cost a mint.
Like new Ann Taylor leather skirt, Brooks Brothers Suede skirt, , JCrew dresses/tweed blazer, Lilly Pulitzer dresses and jeans, Henri Bendel vest, Escada gown, Manhattan boutique fully embroidered coat, Banana Republic dress coat and wool skirt, Tahari suit, Ralph Lauren dresses...
If you have the patience and you like to shop and save, you are missing out by not doing this, IMO. I only take pieces that do not LOOK used and are beautiful quality.
I will tell you, I was raised not to wear secondhand clothing. Got over that as soon as I left home. |

The debate is between my mother and I. Let me preface by saying I adore my mother and she is nothing short of an amazing woman who does so very much for so many.
But Lord is she vain!!!
I've gained about 30lbs in a year and am working with a personal trainer to shed it. But I simply can't fit into a good chunk of my clothes and I'm not willing to spend mega money on an entire new wardrobe. So I've been purchasing used clothes.
Apparently, this is as bad as me saying "I have the bubonic plague and I'm going to die in three weeks." Her reaction was hilariously over the top.
She used to me wearing clothes from places like Gap or banana republic or the loft. Funny thing is, I still am!
But they're simply pre-owned and poor thing is struggling with that. |

I am not opposed to it, but I do buy most of my things new. I very rarely see professional clothes at secondhand stores around here. And most of the consignment stores that carry them charge about the same as getting equivalent pieces new on a good sale.
I buy a lot of DS's stuff at a consignment sale, though. It happens twice a year and they are very particular about the kinds and condition of clothing they sell, so there is great stuff at good prices. However, as he gets older that's less of an option as it seems kids get harder and harder on their clothes, so there is less available in excellent condition.

My Banana Republic dress coat was $198 tags still on but I got it for $10. It's gorgeous. Cream satin with faint beige and yellow roses. When I don't want it anymore, I can consign it and get more than my money back.
DD's favorite store is our local consignment shop. MIL got her a GC there for her birthday last year. She was over the moon. B/c you can find things there that are a little different from what's in the stores.
Maybe shopping sisters. |

No. The only time I find anything remotely useful is when I am making a costume and I'm going to hack the clothing up to make something else. I don't have the patience to go through consignment stores, I'm a little skeeved wearing the clothin in there, and it smells funny. I prefer walking into a store, seeing something neat on the rack with all the sizes right there and going in that way.
I get not wanting to spend a lot of money while in transition, which is why I shop sales. Get a lot of great stuff for cheap... but not used!

I do wear "pre-owned" clothes and enjoy shopping at consignment/tag/thrift stores.
I wouldn't even tell your mom where you are purchasing your clothes - assuming they are clean, only gently used, and are the same brand that you usually buy, how would she or anyone know unless you tell them?

Yes indeed. I've been profiled in a national magazine for doing so, so my cheap bone is "out."
I prefer gently used clothing. I know they can handle washing and wearing and have already proven themselves to be "quality."
Although some are grossed out by used clothing, I feel that way about new. When I think about where it may have been manufactured, stored, hauled, etc. it all needs washed inside and out before wearing regardless. |

ahhh....this takes me back. About 10 years ago I found a Dior suit at a Goodwill Store. It was marked $3, but it was half off day. I paid $1.50 for that suit. I bought a silk top that same day that said "Pier One Imports" on the label. I didn't know that they ever made clothes, but that top was stunning. I still have it, and will wear it again once I shed a few pounds.
I don't know why people think it's creepy. Bring them home in plastic bags and pop them right into the washer. For suits, drive them straight to the dry cleaner. When you buy something new off the rack, you don't know who has tried it on before you....OR took it home, wore it for a night on the town, and then returned it. |

I'm not opposed to it. I think it's a good idea. I just hate taking the time to find a "gem" in a thrift store or garage sale. I'd rather just walk into a store, see a rack of cute stuff and pick my size.
I know what you mean though, my mom was totally skeeved out by the fact that we kept the carpet in our bedroom when we bought our house. Granted it's not beautiful or anything, and I want new carpet but it's low on our priority list right now (and has been for quite a while). She was grossed out because our house had sat empty for a couple years. Not sure why this is gross but apparently it is.
