Twice this week the standard Amazon brown packaging has arrived with advertising for the contents stamped in huge black letters on the brown Amazon box or envelope.

It may just be an advertising gimmick and Amazon is going to do what Amazon is going to do but I wanted to warn anyone who may need to be careful about household members seeing the boxes.

*** NOTE: this is not the same old seasonal oversized items showing up in original packaging.

Well, that's no good. Especially for people who work and the package usually sits on the porch all day. That worries me anyway, but especially with the contents posted on the outside.

Huh?

When I checkout, I'm told if the packaging might reveal the contents.

Do the boxes actually say "Lego X-Wing Starfighter inside!" (for example) or does it just look like advertising and a little creative explaining could fool most children?

A TV will probably come in it's original packaging with just a UPS label slapped on it.

When my KA mixer came a few years ago, it was the actual product box with an address label slapped on it. My DH was so mad! He thought it spoiled my Christmas, but I was still thrilled.

So yeah, it happens.

Perhaps a good solution would be to have the package shipped to a friend or neighbor who will slip it to you on the sly.

I know that if it is a large box amazon (and other retailers) won't put it in a brown box. They will send it as is. So person who ordered the tv, be ready with a sheet or something to put over the box when it arrives to bring it inside. I had to do that a few weeks ago when a little times cozy coupe arrived.

It seems really hit or miss. When my KA mixer came last year (which wasn't a gift) the original box was concealed within a big brown box. Yay I surprised myself!

In this case both packages had advertisements for video games stamped on the standard brown Amazon box and package, respectively. I wonder if it's just a coincidence that I had actually ordered those games? The box said "Assassin's Creed III" on it and the large brown envelope had Black Opps II.

No harm no foul here because DD saw it but DS did not. My kids are 13 and 15. I just told her that the ads may mean nothing about the box contents so if she sees something not to assume it is what it says.

My friend tells her kids that ALL Amazon boxes arriving at their home belong to a friend who uses their address as her shipping address.

P.S. The sheet/blanket idea is a good one! We kept a brown fuzzy blanket on the porch last year so I could run out and cover the boxes if necessary. It's good to have your sleight of hand ready.

Last year a friend ordered a big TV on BF. She expected delivery Tuesday. They delivered the next day - Saturday. She had no idea until her 8 year old asked why there was a big TV on the porch - in front of her DH. Surprise ruined. On the upside they did enjoy watching the TV all holiday season.

My packages arrived yesterday in brown envelopes that said "Black Ops" on them, but I assure you, what was inside was not Black Ops or any other video game (one package was a book, the other was a Lego toy).

So I think maybe you are the victim of Extreme Coincidence, 2012.

I know on checkout there is an option that asks if this is a gift, and they will try and pack it discreetly. Not sure if that would work if it's a really big item, though.

I think it was just a coincidence that the packaging was advertising the actual contents. I ordered a CD that came in an envelope advertising the new Spiderman movie.

They do have ads on their boxes and envelopes, you just happened to order what they were advertising.

For the larger items that ship in their own boxes, I do believe that marking "gift" prevents that, at least that's what I've heard. I live alone, so I've never had to worry about that.

OMG, YES, this is the first time this happened to me!

Not like you described but how others have had the ACTUAL PRODUCT BOX just slapped with a UPS label!!!

I bought a printer off Amazon on Black Friday for $49! (normally $160!) and i came home and right on my front door step, just a few steps from the street was my printer in its original carton.

I was HORRIFIED! ANYONE could have just stolen it! I think that's crazy

I was just looking at something on Amazon and they included the following statement on the product's page:

Is this a gift? Please note that this item ships in its own packaging and cannot be gift-wrapped or concealed.

In your case has it been an ad for the actual contents or just a random ad? I received package that was stamped World of Warcraft on the outside...inside was a Steve Martin box set of DVDs. Dh didn't know I had ordered the DVDs and thought I bought WOW for ds. He sneaked it to me on the sly thinking he was saving a surprise.

ETA...now that I think of it, I think it was Black Ops stamped on the outside of our package. I tossed it and what was on the outside, did not match the inside.

I have started having almost all of my on-line orders shipped to my workplace. It keeps the package a surprise from my kids who arrive home before I do but there is also better service to my in town work as opposed to my out in the boonies home.

I hate those stupid ads. I thought they had shipped the wrong game the first time we received one. I have received a lot of those envelopes and boxes in the past week. I would be very upset if a Lego set came without the brown box and just had a label on the Lego box - very upset.

It's not a gimmick. The items are drop shipped or are so large that they are shipped in their own box. When you order something it usually warns you on the page but it's not in big red letters so no one notices.

Yes and this is not it. This is a small brown amazon box and envelope with the ads - in this case video titles - stamped on it. Not original packaging.

It appears that I just happened to actually order the items being advertised. Quite the coincidence - and I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen "EVERY CHRISTMAS."

I wonder what else they advertise? We could have fun matching it up. I also feel for any person who spied the box and is now eagerly awaiting their COD BO II game. Little do they know the box may hold toothpaste and a Justin Bieber CD

This is different than the usual shipping/box issue. I ordered a ton from Amazon last year and never had anything come with the name of a random video game stamped on the outside of the envelope.

In my case, so surprises were spoiled. But, I didn't think if my son had seen it, he would then later be disappointed he didn't get that particular game...since the contents in my envelope were not even a video game.

As CM Peter notes this is not the seasonal same-old "I can't believe they didn't hide the Mini Cooper I ordered better than that!"

This is them actually stamping ads for the contents of the box (Coincidentally) on the box. Not original packaging but add ons to plain brown boxes that basically say "Specific Video game." I happened to order what they were advertising.

Just so glad they don't advertise Monistat. Don't need boxes with THAT piling up on the porch!

I think it must be advertising for them, but they are putting other items on the packages too! Today, I got Halo 4 that I ordered for my son, and printed HUGE on the back of the yellow bubble mailer is Call of Duty Black OPs II, which happens to be something else my son likes, but geez, it's a little infuriating this time of year to have such telling advertisement on packages.

Well my Amazon box arrived today mangled! Box was wide open...tape down the middle seam of the box was not put on straight and folded under the flap of the box. End of box completely ripped apart.

Got a text from DD showing me the box. I asked her if she saw what was in the box and of course she did since it was wide open and torn. So there goes 4 xmas gifts for her ruined since she saw them.

I would be more concerned with two Peas posting that the packages were mangled and retaped. Handling accident or intent of someone looking to steal certain contents?
