For Christmas Eve, all of my cousins and I are planning to wear ugly Christmas sweaters to my grandparents' house. I think it will be quite funny. I thought it would be easy to find a sweater, but Goodwill was a bust. They had plenty of ugly sweaters...they just weren't Christmas.
Any ideas on where else to look? I don't want to spend much $, as I'll never wear it again.

Funny you should ask; we just got invited to our first ugly sweater party this weekend...and I was at a friend's house recently who's going to one, too.
She is a riot. She bought a cheapie red sweater and is embellishing it with all kinds of crazy, Dollar Tree stuff. She is also placing battery operated lights in her bra, too.
There's a contest; I think she will win.
Of course the alternative, more conservative thing to wear is a true, ugly Christmas sweater; you know, the one you get from someone that's plastered with reindeer, snowflakes, etc. all over it (think Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones' Diary). |

Try a consignment store. Ours had a bunch. Not at thrift store prices though...

I have a Snoopy Christmas sweatsuit from the 80s that I bought at a garage sale for $1. Next year during garage sale season, keep an eye out for sweaters and you will find them very cheap.
In the meantime, ask your friends and coworkers if they happen to have something you could borrow. You can always embellish a sweater you already have. When we had an ugly sweater day at school a lot of people did that. |

I was also going to suggest embellishing a sweater you already have. |

We go to an Ugly Christmas sweater party every year and I keep eying this sweater up for DH. I would love to buy it for him but can't afford the price tag...it is hilarious though.
Ugly sweater of 3 Deers. |

Search Craigslist. The radio station I listen to on the way to work played a Craigslist price guessing game yesterday and ugly Chrostmas sweaters was one of the items. I think the correct price was $15 each but there were several to choose from.

Kmart and Ebay.
DH and I needed Ugly Sweaters for a party this weekend. We went with "fake" ugly sweaters from Walmart. His is actually a t-shirt and mine is a sweatshirt, each printed to look like an ugly sweater pattern.
Mine's actually really cute. It has a fake embroidered reindeer. I kind of love it.

I LOVE this!!
Last year my DH found an ugly Christmas sweater at the DI in the kids section and just stretched it and made it "fit"- part of the ugliness was his belly hanging out!

We are doing that at my MIL's house this year. We got ours at the Salvation Army thrift store. They had tons. |

Thanks ladies!
I didn't think to check Walmart! I love Target so I rarely shop at WM.
My brother got a plain sweater and went to Hobby Lobby for embellishments. So far, he's glued jingle bells for nipples, glued a ribbon bowtie, and ironed on Santa and Rudolph. It's pretty funny. I might go that route if I can't find anything good at the store.

I found one at Sears one year. It was awful! Jingle bells on it and everything.
Of course, when I got to the check out the cashier said "What a pretty sweater!"

A friend of mine used a sweater she had and sewed buttons on the front of all sizes to make a large Christmas tree. It was crafty and very ugly! LOL |

It has become really popular to have ugly sweater parties so it is more difficult to find them at Goodwill and such stores...We just had an ugly sweater competition and work and I won 1st place for my creation...and an apple"eye" pad mini...
I created mine from dollar tree items and added lights and a musical tie...let me see if I can post a picture of it here...
Sorry they are so big..I can't figure out how to make them smaller... |

I have been to a couple of ugly sweater parties and the best one I have seen hands down was when a manly man wore a womans christmas turtle neck with a womans Christmas vest over the top.
They would not in and of themselves have won but the fact that he wore them was perfect .
I have done the dressed up with dollar store items and came in 2nd place to him.
Good luck and have fun! | |
