Do you think that is why it ended that way? For a sequel? I thought for sure one of them would die.
And can you imagine Amy with a baby, that poor child! |

I didn't dislike the book itself, but the author managed to write two characters without a single redeeming quality between them and I ended up disliking both of them.
I have read her other books and her main characters are always deeply flawed, but still basically likable.
I got to the point in Gone Girl where I no longer cared what happened to either of them.

I hated the ending at first too. Then I thought about it and realized that the ending could not have gone any other way. By the end, both characters were despicable and it was only fitting that they were forced to spend the rest of their time together. I thought it was genius. But, I did initially have a hissy fit when I first read it though

I liked the book. I liked the twist. I did not like the ending. I didn't mind so much that they ended up miserable together, but what bothered me is how abruptly the book ended. It seemed like the author just gave up and walked away from writing the book. I felt like it was unfinished.

I enjoyed the book. I wasn't totally satisfied with the ending.
I don't understand though why everyone is so hard on the husband. Yes, he had an affair. He was wrong. However she framed him for murder and then she murdered someone else to get herself off the hook. Yet some say "they deserve each other". I can't see how he is possibly as bad as her.
She is a sociopath, he is a man who had an affair that he seemed to be sorry about. How does that equal "they deserve each other"?

ITA (minus the hissy fit 'cuz I loved the ending right when I read it, lol).
The best punishment for both of them was to be stuck with each other. What kind of ending would've been better? |

I wanted his dad to hold the key - that he knew she was framing him, and the late-night sneak outs, looking for Amy at their house, was his way of telling Nick he loved him.
I wanted the dad to blow her cover, to be the evidence, and Go figured it out.

I just finished it a couple of days ago. Great book!
I hated the ending at first too. Then I thought about it and realized that the ending could not have gone any other way. By the end, both characters were despicable and it was only fitting that they were forced to spend the rest of their time together.
That's pretty much my reaction as well. I think that she had more hell planned for him at the end, after he told her that he felt sorry for her because she has to wake up every day and be "Amy". She said "I really wish he hadn't said that."
From an interview with the author:
What did you want to accomplish with the ending?
First of all, I didn't write it as an open ending to set up a sequel at all. It was the only thing that made sense to me, that made sense to what was true to the book and true to the characters. Amy's not going to end up in jail. She's Amazing Amy! You're never going to find the aha! clue because she thinks she's already thought of everything and that's who she is. People think they would find that satisfying, if she were caught and punished. You know, when I'm at a reading or something, people will come up to me and are very honest about saying, "I hated the ending!" I always say, "Well, what did you want to have happen?" And it's like, "I wanted justice!" I promise you, I just don't think you'd find it satisfying for Amy to end up in a prison cell just sitting in a little box.

I had a hard time putting the book down, but did not enjoy it, if that makes any sense. The characters were both awful and like two freight trains en route to a fiery collision, so it stressed me out to watch it happen.
And then the ending came... UGH. That guy will never get a good night's sleep again. And the thought of a child in that mess!
I really thought the dad with alzheimers was going to be the key to it all. That he would have seen or heard something when he wandered away from the home, and he would have a moment of lucidity when he would ensure the truth came out.
The thought that there could be people like that in the world is horrifying.
Good book, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I really enjoyed it and although I didn't like that there was no justice in the ending, I can see why the author wrote it that way. I didn't dislike the husband as much as Amy but it seemed to me at the end that he actually enjoyed her little games, even if he wouldn't admit it. He built a prison for himself because I'm sure he could have removed himself from the situation if he really wanted. But, he didn't. So he stayed to see what Amy would do next and be ready to counter her plans. In that respect they do deserve each other and that's why I didn't see how the book could have ended any other way.

I think he stayed for his child. He knew his child would not have a chance if he left, so he stayed to (try to) protect his child.
I actually have an idea for an alternative ending. In the book Amy trapped Nick by using the sperm saved at the fertility clinic to become pregnant. It would have been awesome if the baby was born and was another race and therefore obviously not Nick's baby. There could have been a mix-up at the fertility clinic, thus exposing Amy's trickery. But perhaps that would come across as too contrived.
