As an example I make many cards, and so keep a stack of pre-cut, pre-embossed backgrounds so that all I need to do is add a title and already made/purchased die-cut to make a cute card. I'm not really interested in PL, but wonder if pre-cutting a selection of color coordinated papers would make scrapping easier. I tend to print mostly landscape 4x5 photos, but can't decide on good sizes for blocking- maybe 4*6, 5x12, 6x9, 9x9? Anyone ever tried something like this?  | |

I'm in the same boat as you, in that I don't do PL, either. However, I have considered cutting some 3x5 cards for journaling spots. I think that having a supply of these on hand would help the process move along quicker (possibly) and would also help use up some scraps. So I would recommend going with your idea if you think it would help your process |

No, I tried this once and didn't end up using them. I am preplanning layouts for a retreat I am going to, so this is what I do: start with the pictures, match the paper, cut the title, and any other die cuts I want to do with my cricut, then I look for any other coordinating embellishments. | |

The only prep I do is printing the photos. Always at 4x6 in bulk. Then I'm ready to scrap without having to worry about printing photos |

It takes me days to SB. I prepare by laying out the pictures and then picking out a few pieces of paper that I want to use and then look at all my embellishments. I then play with the page for awhile until I like what I see. | |

I have a couple of different techniques
1) For my vacation/camping photos, I develop a running theme for the year and make some pre-made layouts, then add photos after the trip.
2) I tend to scrapbook alot of project albums - example: I am doing one album about every house I have lived in. The layout is the same, place a photo and on this particular project quite a bit of journaling as this project is more about the story.
3) If it is not a specific project or a trip, then I tend to start with the photos match the paper and embellishments and design. I do tend to be very theme oriented in my style.
However, I just purchased a cuttlebug, and I do think that I will try having some pre-embossed borders and mat sized pieces available and see if that works for me.

I don't really prep for any of my layouts. When I decide to work on a page or album I get an idea of what I want to use and then start collaborating. I took Lisa Truesdell's mini album class and she had a great idea in there. She said before she starts she will basically create her own little collection, scrapbook kit. I'm going to try this approach so I'm not running all over looking for one perfect sticker and I make sure to work with certain items. <<< Does that make sense?!
I've learned tha when I precut anything from my Silhouette I usually end up wanting it in a different color or something along those lines so I basically cut as I'm going.

I don't do well with pre made things. I am not PL also but I like the idea so I will be making as I go journaling cards & such. But if I pre made it & it doesn't match my pics then ??? SO the only prep I do is look for ideas for that particular theme & print pics. |

In an ideal world, this is how I prep.
Choose photos.(may or may not print at this point)
Select a sketch.
Choose papers.
Choose embellishments.
Print photos if not already printed, or print different sizes as needed for sketch.
Scrap.
I try to do at least some of these items in advance, so that I can have some "kits" ready to go. This is especially helpful if I'm going to a crop away from home. I also have more fun scrapping if the basic decisions are already made.
My least favorite way to scrap is to just sit down with pictures and end up with a finished page. I can get overwhelmed by making that many decisions at one time. I much prefer to make my kits (sometimes in assembly line fashion), but it doesn't always happen.
I've also found that pre-cut items rarely get used. |

I start with my pics (which are 4 x 6 - I'm still scrapping from the old film days LOL). Then I decide on a sketch that'll work with them. Then I choose papers. The rest typically waits until I'm putting it together unless something specific pops in my head I know I want to use. |

That's probably a good idea if you like all the paper stacking that is the curent trend. You have all different sizes already cut at your fingertips and then stack as needed. |

I don't make cards. I stick to Hallmark for those.
But I remember Glitter Girl offered a class on cutting up a whole paper pad as a way of pre-planning layouts. I can't for the life of me remember what the name of the class was, though. Maybe you could check out her website and take a look at the past classes she has offered. This was just last year. Anyhoo, it was a neat way of cutting up your coordinated paper pads into the mat sizes you use most frequently. Someone may have mentioned it already - I didn't scroll through the entire thread. | |

I know that has worked for some people, but I find it much easier to just plan the layouts according to the photos. I do "prep" that way a lot, in that I go through a planning process of selecting a sketch and a color scheme and papers to work with. But as far as deciding what papers to cut or how to embellish, I tend to decide that without so much planning. |

A few people have mentioned Shimelle having a class kinda dealing with my question- anyone know the title? I've looked here and on her blog, could it be "Pretty Paper Party?"

I usually have a paper line or a few different papers in mind after I take the photo(s). I sometimes draw a sketch or choose from sketches I've made previously, and I always print my photos in big batches. |

Shimelle's class about cutting up a whole collection is Perfect Collection. It includes a PDF of measurements to cut into your paper. But it isn't so much about putting together your own page kit. Glitter Girl 019 is about just that subject though.
On the right side of Shimelle's website is a link to online classes (the second picture down) and that should have a link to perfect collection.
