My grandmother had to watch "Another World" come hell or high water every.single.day LOL! I used to spend one week with her each summer, and since that was before the days of cable and/or more than one TV per home, I ended up watching, too. She would announce "It's time for my story", and I had to give up the "Timmy and Lassie" rerun (or "Gomer Pyle" or "Bewitched", etc.) I was watching so she could have the TV.
I have to admit that even as a child, I was pretty fascinated by these "TV lives" LOL. The women were glamorous, the men were handsome, and the settings were something I was not likely to ever experience in my life.
while my grandma was an "NBC" fan (at least I think AW was an NBC soap), my mom could not be pried from CBS during the day. "As the World Turns" and "The Guiding Light" were on every day while we were at school, and we would get a little glimpse into those worlds in the summer if it was a rainy day (otherwise, we kids were outside having fun).
I do recall being able to keep up with the story lines even with my limited summertime viewship b/c the plots moved so slowly back when they were only 30 minute shows. I also remember when GL started including "teen hunks" to draw us in with their summer story lines (wasn't Kevin Bacon one of them?).
While we don't have many daily soaps any more, I can't help but think that many of our prime time shows are just glorified, well-produced versions of what we watched back then.
So, how many of you got hooked on these stories with your mom or grandma? What was the "must see" afternoon drama in you house?

Yep, I cut my teeth on Days of our Lives and Another World. My fav of all time was Santa Barbara. I too, only watched NBC soaps.

Yep! It was All My Children. I watched it with mom as far back as I can remember. During my school years she would keep me updated. That was usually our after school conversation. Then the years I didn't really watch, she would still keep me updated. I recorded it on VHS until we got DVR and still recorded it up until it went off the air 2 years ago(?). I used to go home after work and watch it every day! |

Yup. Definitely. Grandma's stories were on CBS. I remember when Whitney Houston was on as the world turns, jermaine Jackson was on one of them, meg Ryan was on it too! She was a main character.
I remember when bold and beautiful started too!

I watched with my dad. My dad had one day off during the week and I would stay with him on that day before I started school. It was his day to catch up on General Hospital. He'd fix a snack and we would sit together in his recliner. |

Oh how I loved As The World Turns and Guiding Light, especially ATWT. The viewing of CBS soaps started with Grannie, then passed on to my mom, and then me.
I watched during the summer months and on holidays from school. If I was sick, I remember being able to lay on the sofa with my pillow and blanket and watch along then too.
I would occasionally watch The Young and The Restless and The Bold & Beautiful, also on CBS, but ATWT and GL were the mainstays.
Awww, the memories.

Me too! I was actually living with my grandma while I was attending university. She watched Another World and I'd be in the other room watching B&B!
I don't watch soaps any more (except for Coronation Street) but I watched Y&R for years. |

I have been watching soaps with my grandma and mom for so long I think I have seen them all at one point lol going back as far as Ryan's hope, edge of night, all my children, as the world turns, guiding light and then in college my roommate got me on another world and days of our lives so I know who Rachel Cory is lol. I have also watched one life to live and general hospital crap did I miss any lol oh I think I just aged myself |

My mamaw watched Guiding Light. She was just like your grandmother, when it was time for her "story", you lost the TV.

I enjoyed watching different characters age through the shows when the same actor played the part for years. For example, ATWT's Kim and Bob Stewart were played by the same people for what seemed like eons. And Bob's mother, Lisa, was another long-standing character.
I remember seeing a "fashion" update about the show that included pictures of these people in the clothing from many different years--quite interesting!
I saw someone mentioned "The Edge of Night". I think Mom watched that one, too, from time to time. | |

So did any of you plan your college class schedule aroung your soap LOL? I didn't, but I had band practice at 4:00 and GL was on at 3:00. I pretty much stopped watching it for most of my four years in band, although I did catch it sometimes second semester when marching band was over.
We had "designated soap TV lounges" in our dorms--one TV would be on CBS all afternoon, another on NBC, and another on ABC. If you wanted to watch anything else, you had to go find another TV LOL. | |

What a great thread! It brings back such great memories of spending time with my grandmother as a kid. I remember the 3:00 afternoon movie would come on after AW, and we would always watch that together - and for some reason I remember that 3:00 movie being a Planet of the Apes movie | |

Oh yeah...The Secret Storm and the Edge of Night were my first two.  But before they came on, there was The Betty Feezor Show. ("mature" NC Charlotte area Peas will recognize that). Betty was a local forerunner of Martha Stewart.
Then came Y&R, As The World Turns and Guiding Light. I still remember a LOOONNNGGG running story line on Edge of Night. "Who Killed Stephanie Martin?" The daytime soap version of Who Killed JR! Why I remember that is beyond me. LOL

My mom was a big ATWT fan. Had to watch "her story" every day. Or tape it once they got a VCR.
After my dad retired a few years ago he started watching one too, Bold and Beautiful I think. Not that he would admit it, of course.

It is a family joke that I started drinking coffee at age 2 when I was watching ATWT or GL with my mother.
If the networks or SoapNet would just start showing those old soaps at say 1970 on, I'd be hooked. That was good tv!

my grandparents watched general hospital and y&r. i remember my grandpa getting all in a tizzy about something to do with victor and nicki, back when she was a stripper (or am i making that up?? lol!).
i've watched b&b since the beginning (though they are making it really hard right now, i've returned to work so just read the recaps). at my old job we had a tv in the interview rooms for orientation videos. it only got one local tv station with an antennae. it happened to channel 8, so b&b. i would eat my lunch every day in the interview room from 1:30 to 2:00 and watch!! | |

My grandma was never a soap watcher, but my mom always watched Another World. I used to watch it with her as a preteen onward.
And I loved Texas! No one seems to remember or have watched that, lol, h&hmommy! Jill on Y&R was Kelly on Texas, former love interest of Trey. Trey thought he fathered Kelly's son, but it eventually turned out that his 'dad' was actually the father and the boy was his brother!
I remember when Ray Liotta was Joey Perrini on AW.
Sandy from Another World, Iris' love child son, was on the Reba show. I watched Julianna (Julianne?) Moore as Frannie on As the World Turns.
I remember when Meg Ryan was Betsy on ATWT, with her love interest Steve.
And I first saw Marissa Tomei on ATWT as well. That was the soap dh watched when we first got together.
Lots of good memories watching soaps with loved ones over the years. And interesting to see when some transitioned from the small screen to the big screen.

My Grandma watched DOOL. I was never into it. I was grossed out by the kissing. The horror!!! haha
I started watching Days in college. I have not stopped since. My kids, as infants, were calmed by the Sands through the hourglass opening music.
I have made a vow to watch forever, so I can catch my grandma up on her story in heaven. My family used to think I was weird, but my daughter (who does not watch) said to me that she will continue the tradition if ever I'm unable to watch.

I grew up watching Another World (and Edge of Night ... remember that one?!!!) with my Grandma and mum ... loved those shows from a very early age 
Later, we all became addicted to Days of Our Lives ... and after my Grandma passed away my mum and I became die hard Y&R and General Hospital fans ...
I don't watch any soaps now but my mum still watches GH ...

OMG Metaldancer, I hadn't thought about Betty Feezor in decades. My Mom and Aunt loved her show and gave each other her cookbooks for Christmas. I started with my grandmother and soaps on the RADIO. We listened to the Guiding Light and One Man's Family everyday. It was so exciting when The Guiding Light came to TV and we got to see what the characters looked like. | |

My mom was a NBC soap watcher while my aunt loved the CBS soaps. By high school I was hooked on All My Children and GH. I still watched pretty regularly as a mom and was so sad when Guiding Light, ATWT and AMC went off the air. I tape GH now so I can fast forward the parts I don't like. My kids make fun of me cause I'm usually picky about what I read and watch but I think the connection to my childhood memories and the fact that they are like a never ending story keeps me engaged. I especially love all the reminiscing going on GH now. | |

My mom used to watch As The World Turns... it came on at 11:00 a.m. The Young and The Restless came on right before that at 10:00 a.m. I watched ATWT with mom but ended up getting more hooked on Y&R. I'm going to age myself, but this was all when rock star Danny Romalotti was first on the show. This was during my teen years and I was hooked during the summer. When I was in my late teens, I started recording Y&R during the day to watch when I got home. I actually stopped watching I think back in like 1995.
I miss the old days of the soaps and like a previous poster said if they started to run any of these shows from starting in the 70s, I'd probably be hooked again. I'm sure I missed so much because that was before VCRs and when I was in school. | |

Actually, I watched General Hospital with my mom and my grandpa. Then once I started school, I would rush home from the bus to try to catch the last few minutes - I must have been between 6 and 8 doing that.
In college, I scheduled my classes around my ABC soaps. I recorded them for years when I worked.
Now, though, I don't watch any (of course, two of my old favorites aren't on at the moment). I just can't get back into them, even when I do have time. |

No, my grandmother didn't live with us. My mom watched a couple and I would come home from school when one was on, so I listened in the background while I told her about my day in school (yes, I told my parents everything, unlike my daughters who don't have a word to say about what they do in school)!
My grandmother may have watched soap operas too, but I don't know.
I did watch football games with my parents and grandparents. They would come over on Sunday to watch the Redskins!

Niether my mom or grandmother watched daytime TV but I sure did!! I watched General Hospital in the '60s and rocked all 4 of my kids watching AMC, OLTL,
and GH in the 70's, 80's and 90's.

Mom always watched Another World. (I always thought those spirals around the opening title were big curlers like mom used to wear under her bandana.) In college I got hooked on Days. I continued watching & taping until my last VCR tape finally fuzzed out years ago. I used to catch up over the summers, but gave that up too. I never could figure out why young pretty Rachel was married to old gray Mack. Or why writers thought Marlena should get possessed by the devil. | |

I started actually watching soaps with my grandma who was watching Love of Life, Christopher Reeves was on it then. My mom worked so she only got to watch during vacation or maternity leave. We watched that soap, The Young and the Restless, All My Children and General Hospitals. My oldest daughter likes the reality tv shows, but my younger daughter enjoys the soaps with me and her grandmother, my mom. The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital both rocked today and are tomorrow's must see tv, I'm telling you, don't miss it. |

I watched ATWT and GL with my Mother and talked about them with my grandmother. I remember one of the weddings on ATWT and how my grandmother and I totally trashed the bride's dress. We were so disappointed in what she was wearing.
My grandmother was hard of hearing and would turn her 'story' up as loud as it would go. My aunt said she never missed any of her program even if she went outdoors, she could hear it clearly coming from my grandmother's house.
I'm watching GH now and it is great! If you used to watch, try it again. They have Heather, Lucy, A.J., Kevin, and Ned back on already with more to come as GH gets closer to their 50th Anniversary show. |

My mom started the afternoon watching "Search For Tomorrow". Then followed by either the soaps on CBS or ABC. I remember asking my mom to make me a nurses cap and give me a mug of chocolate milk for my "coffee" while she was watching "General Hospital". It seemed like the characters were always in the cafeteria having coffee at the hospital back in the day. |

Used to watch days since like 1990s, the first scene I remember was Bo on his motorcycle. I watched it religiously they college until they put them all on an island and it just got weird and all the old characters were gone.

I watched "The Children" with my mother every day. I came home for lunch to watch it. She had to write a note that it was OK. This started in first grade. I learned what a prostitute was at a young age. we loved watching our story together. When I would visit my grandma it was all about y&r where i learned about strippers. I added in GH during the Luke & Laura days and got really confused about rape.
Y&R jumped the shark with Sharon. GH lost my interest after Luke & Laura. AMC just got lame.
Now it is Downton Abbey. | |
