I am about to leave on a business trip to the Dominican republic with my husband. The dress code calls for elegant-casual dress.
Please explain. |

I would say things like linen pants, casual but cute skirts. I think they want people to be comfortable, but not jeans and tennis shoes.
It is also stupid to put that kind of term on an invite since it is made up, but that's what you have to work with, so I'd go with comfortable but cute.

I would say pants and skirts, no jeans or tees. More casual dresses, but not too short or too skimpy.
Have fun! |

Mmmm, I'd go with cotton dresses, skirts and shirts/tops, linen outfits, sandals, but no cut offs, t-shirts, flip-flops etc.

I've never heard the term, but I would probably equate it with business casual.
Casual = jeans and tee shirt, flip flops
Business casual - nice black pants with nice tops, cute dresses, sandals
Elegant = floor length dress
It's the Dominican Republic, I'm sure they expect you to be comfy at the resort. But for meals and events, I would step it up to a nice sundress and sandals. As opposed to capris and a tee shirt. |

Woobster, that's what I thought too.
I will pack my most elegant Shorty-shorts. Just kidding, I don't wear Shorty-shorts.
Thanks, everyone! |

Exactly!
I think I'd go with a dress that leans more to the casual side.
Did the person writing that term make it up? I have never heard that before! |

I would say it means be prepared to participate in events ranging from elegant to casual.

Sounds like they're looking for resort wear. Stuff the Real Housewives wear when they're on vacation - with less boob.

I'd think what would work for casual dress, but then bump it up to fancier fabrics or cuts. So, for example, instead of a cotton t-shirt, I'd go for something airy and light like a type of silk/drapey fabric short sleeved shirt. |

I believe it means lace covered jean shorts with a floofy sheer lace top and kitten heels with pearls on them. |

I'm picturing what some of the more stylish teachers wear in our district. And the entire offerings of Ann Taylor Loft.
Elegant casual. That just sounds lovely and makes me want to revamp my wardrobe to fit. This could be because I haven't bought anything new in nearly a year and I'm sick of my closet, though. |

Yes: velvet poncho
No: yoga pants (unless they're bedazzled)...
ETA: it means be prepared to participate in events ranging from elegant to casual

Alright, I guess I will bring my velvet poncho. I had hoped my sequined track suit was adequate. |

I would definitely pack some Daisy Duke cut-offs with matching Jimmy Choo shoes.
Or shop the Quacker Factory collection on QVC? Not that there's anything wrong with Quaker Factory clothes but it's the one line that comes to mind when I think casual (stretchy, comfy clothes) and elegant (sequins, rhinestones, shiny stuff).
That's all I got. . . I have never heard of elegant casual wear.

Seems very controlling to put that on the invite....
I think what they mean is dress casually -- but expensively! Like you are at a fancy resort or the country club....
Basically a bedazzled track suit would be purrrrfect |

Seems like it would be mixing something really fancy with something casual.
Like a ball gown with sneakers.

We use the dressy casual term a lot.
I would say to dress nicely. No shorts, no capris, no tennis shoes.
Dress in nice dresses, nice shirts, slacks or dark wash jeans (no cutout jeans if you know what I mean) and pretty skirts. Make sure to wear nice shoes (even if wearing jeans).
Basically in DR people tend to be way dressier than here (my mom would get a heart attack if she sees how people dresses here to go to Walmart ) so just have fun, pick a few outfits (make sure to get some sort of cardigan because according to my family "it's cold" right now (of course, they are from the Caribbean so anything under 70 is cold lol) and accessorize.
Have fun and I am so jealous of you. |

Elegant = dressy, to me, but I think they throw the "casual" tag in there so you know they're not meaning "black tie". So I would interpret that as classy dress clothes, skip the ball gowns. |
