So I bought some skinny jeans but I'm nervous to wear them out in public. How does someone of my age (40) wear them appropriately?
I'm mostly an hourglass shape, kind of big chested (34D) and wear size 6/8 pants. I don't want to look like I'm trying to be a teenager and I don't want to end up looking like an ice cream cone since my chest is bigger.
Any ideas or should I just return them ? Any blogs you want to point me to would be great too. I'd love to see pictures.

I bought a pair to wear with a pair of boots that come up almost to my knees. I don't wear them with anything else for the reasons you mentioned: close to 40, don't want to look like I'm trying to be 20, etc.

It's not an age thing--it's a body type thing. It's not going to be the best look for anyone with hips and thighs on the larger side, whether they're 21 or 41. Although I think anyone who's in their 40s and older should avoid crazy washes and rips and holes in any style jean.
I've found a bunch of great fashion blogs for older women, but I can't post them right now-have to take my dog to the vet. I'll try to come back and link you up. |

I wear mine with knee high low/flat boots or ankle boots. I also team them with longer tops/jackets to cover my tum/bum.
Look out for other women in them that look good - or look at store websites, magazines etc to see what makes them look right.

I love them and I'm 44. I'm a size 8 but my legs are my best feature. I'm a 36C on top.
I love ballerina flats and wear them with skinny jeans. Not the ultra, uber, skin tight, skinny jeans. Just skinny jeans.
I personally hate flare or boot cut jeans. They remind me of bell-bottoms in the 70s. <shudder> |

I wear them with everything. It's pretty much the only style jeans I wear. I'm 41, and I don't think skinny jeans are limited to the teenage demographic.
I'd suggest going to Pinterest - they have tons of outfits there!

I am 48 and wear skinny jeans almost exclusively in a size 12. I wear them with ballet type flats and sometimes tucked into boots. Those are the type of jeans that look the best on me. I even have some that are slightly distressed. I've never felt like I was trying to look like a teenager |

How "skinny" are they? I mean, there's skinny and then there's skin-tight, kwim?
I am 40 and frankly plus-sized and wear "skinny" jeans that fit well (so no muffin top) and have a narrow cut through the leg. Then I balance them with a longer, looser top and ankle or knee boots to reduce the ice cream cone look. I like a thicker fabric with a lower spandex content (not more than 1% ) because they don't cling to every bump and dimple. Wearing them a bit on the long side, so they break a tiny bit at the arch of your foot, instead of wearing them ankle length, also helps balance things if you want to wear regular shoes or flats. Every time I wear them people ask me if I've lost weight, so I think they're OK.
As with most things, it's not the item itself, but how you wear it. I'd never wear skin-tight super skinnies and a cropped top at my age and with my body type, but a pair of good jeans with a narrow cut (I have on some skinny "Not Your Daughter's Jeans" today) that fit well and paired with the right top can be very flattering on almost anyone, I think. |

So what brands of skinny jeans are you ladies wearing? I have one pair I like that I wear with flats or tucked into boots but I haven't had luck finding more styles that flatter. I am hard to fit in jeans...I'm straight thru the waist and hips and I like a slightly higher rise. Curvy is definitely out.
Any suggestions? |

I just went on a shopping spree this weekend at Nordstrom Rack and scored about 8 or 9 new pairs of jeans. Far and away, the ones I liked best were Not Your Daughter's Jeans. They are not low-rise, but not "mom jeans". I got some classic fit and some skinny. LOVE them!
I also got a pair of Kut from the Kloth that are a tad more low-rise, but still not plumber butt showin' style. They have bling on the pockets.
Everyone is different and will like different brands and fits. Nordstrom has TONS of brands, styles, sizes, etc. Nordstrom Rack has great prices. I paid about $15/pair for all of my jeans, except one pair that was $30. But since my butt looked like a $1,000,000 in them, I felt they were worth it. |

I'm almost 42 and love skinny jeans. I agree with those who pointed out that when paired with the right top and shoe, they can be very flattering.
I wear mine with ballet flats or boots. I wore them with my Converse sneakers one day, and my 10 year old DD said "You look like a college student." I don't know if I was supposed to or not, but I decided to take it as a compliment.
These are the ones I wear:

I agree. It's just the popular style nowadays, so you're not too old to wear them at 40. When they first started becoming fashionable (again), it took me a little while to get used to the idea and to find ones that fit right, but now I'm totally on board
ETA sorry, I'm not in my 40's yet, but I thought I'd chime in anways. My point was - if you find ones that look good on you, I don't think 40 is too old to wear them at all. |

I don't think Skinny Jeans are any different than straight, boot cut or flair. It's the cut of the jean.
It doesn't matter how old you are, it's how it fits. If it FITS and looks great on you, wear them just like you would anything else. |

I am 40 and wear them with tall boots and ballet flats. I have worn them a handful of times rolled at the bottom with Chuck Taylors or Topsiders.
I think they are generally more flattering on me with boots though.
I do think they look better on certain body types and I don't agree that "fat people" should never wear them. It really depends on fat body type and how the clothes are worn.
With larger hips, I would keep the shirt a bit longer and wear boots. |

I recently got a pair of jeggings to wear with boots. I have tried on many, many skinny jeans and other jeggings and have a really hard time finding some that I like. I really like the look of skinny jeans with ballet flats on other people, but feel like my hips are too big (and my legs too short) to pull that off. Not sure if it is one of those things that probably looks fine but I am not quite comfortable with it yet, or if it truly does look silly on me. I am still on the lookout for the perfect pair and hopefully they will jump out at me soon! |

And I'm thin and look ridiculous in them. I'm a size 2 and I'm 5'9", but I'm a runner so my legs (calves really) do not fit in them. The jeans fit everywhere else but are suuuuuper tight on my calves and then I feel like I can't bend my knees and my sensory issues with my clothing kick in and I start to flip out! Seriously. It's not pretty. In any way. |

I'm *gasp* closer to 40 than I am to 30. I think any age can pull off skinny jeans with an appropriate top and shoes. I think to successfully wear them depends on your body type. Wear what looks good and don't worry about age so much! |

I wish I could wear skinny jeans! I am jealous of the size 2 (haha). I have a problem wearing things that fit "tightly". I am 5'7" and weigh 140. I buy all my sweats in size large and wear them around the house. Then when I leave the house and put on jeans they feel so tight (compared to loose sweats!). I wish I could stand the feel of tight (good tight, not too tight) clothes.

I'm 46 (ack!) and skinny jeans are pretty much the only style of jeans I've worn for years. I agree with others that have said it depends more on body type than age. I see 60 year old women looking great in skinnies (not spray painted on type) with a button down or cashmere sweater or a cute j crew jacket.
I think balance is the key. I wouldn't wear skinny jeans and a tight low cut top with 4 inch heals. I like to wear mine tucked into boots with a looser fitting sweater and scarf. They also look nice with a flowy silk top (Vince and Joie have great ones-they are a bit pricey but if you want you can find similar). I also wear them with a tee shirt and jacket often. In the fall and spring I wear them with ballet flats. In the summer with a flat thong sandal. One of my favorite spring outfits is white skinny jeans a good denim top and black thong sandals. I think it is a classic look.

ha! Peano's blog proves my point!
What not to wear?
Skinny jeans (can be worn with some tunics or A line long tops)
Pencil skirts
Bias cut skirts
Very short skirts
This fat chick who is pear shaped should not wear skinny jeans. So there.
ETA: okay maybe just maybe I would wear a tunic top with skinny jeans. A line tops never fit me right.

I am 44 and I wear skinny jeans all the time even colored ones. I prefer the skinny jeans from White House Black Market, Ann Taylor. J Crew and Ann Taylor Loft. I try to stay away from colors and styles my teens might wear. For the record, I am 5'3" and wear a size 2/4. I also have a boyish figure (no hips). Personally I think skinny and straight jeans look best for my body shape. Some styles just over power me.

I don't think Skinny Jeans are any different than straight, boot cut or flair. It's the cut of the jean.
I have to disagree I'm afraid
Boot cut or flared jeans balance out a larger mid-section whereas if you're larger in the middle tapering down to little ankles and skinny jeans it can look an odd overall shape and actually emphasise the bits we don't want.
I do agree that cut is important though

But my point is that it't not the fat, it's the shape. IMO, pears probably want a wider leg to balance out their silhouette, whereas apples, even overweight ones, can play up their strengths--comparatively thin hips and thighs--with skinny jeans. However, no one looks good if they appear they are clad in sausage casings. |

I agree Peano. I am the perfect apple shape. Sometimes a wider leg cut doesn't look good on me, because my legs are smaller, proportionately. A good size-appropriate (read: NOT skin tight) "skinny" jean will accent the leg, and with a longer top will hide the problem areas in the middle. |

I wear skinny jeans too. I'm 53. People usually take me for younger than I am, like 45. They tell me I still can rock the skinny jeans. But I am not nearly as skinny as some of you - I am usually wear a size 10.
The only brand I have so far are Target brand. I have 3 sizes and they all fit me OK. Size 10, Size 11 & Size 13.
The size 11 fit best.
I like them best with boots. I have low boots and tall ones. I also like them with ballet flats. And also w/ Converse.
As for tops, I almost always try to wear a long tank top underneath. And I almost always wear a belt to eliminate the dreaded plumber's butt.

I am 47 and I just don't do skinny jeans. I am short (5'4" ) with a big chest (DDD), small waist and healthy thighs. No matter how thin I get, my thighs always look bigger compared to the rest of me. Skinny jeans don't work for my body. I don't want to wear tunic tops because with my chest, they look too poofy.
I love a slight boot cut that goes to the bottom of my shoe. This lengthens my legs. Jeans tucked into boots just make me look stubbier. I will wear a straight jean and I love boyfriend cuts since they skim over my thighs and usually have a lower rise which lengthens my short torso.

When I put them on it feels like they accentuate my thighs and I do not want to do that. So will a longer top help that from becoming the focus? I'm afraid of billowy/loose tops making me look top heavy. But if it's longer and goes straight down, does that work?

I have big thighs, too. I'm kind of an hourglass shape that is bigger top and bottom with a defined waist. I wear my skinny jeans (disclaimer: jeans that have a close fit and narrow legs, not that fit like a sausage casing) with longer tops. I like surplice styles because they give me some definition at the middle, but I also wear the "longer and straight down" style that you describe as long as they are not baby doll style, banded at the bottom or made of a bulky material.
Look - I have big thighs and a big rear end and no baggy jeans or boot-cut jeans are going to disguise that. When I get dressed I'm looking to create a long, unbroken line, and I think that's entirely possible with skinny jeans worn correctly. I only wear dark wash jeans that fit very well and don't have any fading or holes to draw attention. I never, ever under any circumstances wear a shirt shorter than hip length and if they don't cover my butt I usually have some kind of flowy cardigan over them. I make sure the jeans are long enough to break over my instep a bit, and I wear shoes that don't draw attention to themselves. I always wear either a scoop or a v-neck shirt and usually some kind of necklace to draw attention upward.
My favorite skinny jeans are some "Not Your Daughter's Jeans" skinnies I got at Marshall's and some A.N.A premium skinnies from JCPenney. The A.N.A. ones are actually better because they are only 1% spandex and then don't stretch out and get all baggy in the rear end. They're dark and a bit long for me and I get compliments every time I wear them.
I'm 5'5" and a size 18W. I don't expect my jeans to make me look like a size 6; I'm just trying to look the best I can with what I have.
Don't let anyone tell you you can't rock skinny jeans because your butt/thighs/whatever aren't perfect. It's all about a good fit and wearing them with the right things. |
