I've known about this habit for quite some time, but just recently learned how common it is.

It's done mostly from anxiety, biting on the inside of your cheek
It's a habit that can be broken, like any other bad habit.

Happy now?

Almost every time I take a nap, I awake to the pain of biting my cheek.

I never do it during waking hours, don't know how those who do it...can? Hurts like a sonoabitch!

You don't actually "bite" it - it's like chewing on the very outside layer. I don't do it like I used to, but I catch myself doing it once in awhile. My mom is really bad about it and one of my sisters has trouble with it too.

Wow...so glad I posted this.

I am one too....and wish I could stop.
I remember the day I started it!!
To my knowledge, my dentist does not know. When I have an appointment, I make myself stop so it clears up...and then eventually I start up again.

I started googling about this a week ago. For so long, I have felt alone in this. I was relieved to know I am not alone, but it's still embarassing...

I do this mildly, when anxious. Yes, it's like chewing the very outside layer. It's not really painful. Just an annoying habit.

Lol - I found myself going there too. Although as I do, I notice my cheek is really smooth, so I think it's been awhile since I've done it.

I didn't know I did it until my dentist pointed it out! I must do it in my sleep. I thought the ridges in my cheeks were natural! Lol! Now that he pointed it out I always run my tongue over the area I bite and it drives me nuts!

I read that that can happen...cancer from this habit. I did read an explanation on how it can happen, but don't remember what it was.

I used to do it unconsciously. My dentist would fuss when I'd got to appointments and he said it was generally stress-related for most people that do it.

What made me stop - or at least made me conscious of it so I'd stop myself from doing it - was seeing myself on a videotape. I was blissfully unaware that the tape caught me making all these bizarre faces as I contorted my mouth/cheek enough to chew on it. Not a pretty sight, I assure you. I have virtually eliminated the habit as a result.

I do it too. I get sores in my mouth and my dentist gets mad at me.

I tend to bite just inside my lower lip at the corner and my cheek.

I thought I was the only one who did this! I've been doing it my whole life. My dentist also admonished me but it's a habit I can't seem to break.

I did, however, quit biting my nails after more than 50 years so I'm not hopeless.

I went through a few years of doing this, while I was in university. Just a nervous habit. Later, I ended up with crowns on a couple of molars (not from the cheek biting) and their smooth surface made it impossible to bite my cheek and that's what stopped the habit. Geez, it sounds so weird typing that out.

I have done this my whole life. I suppose I knew it was a nervous habit, but it has honestly never even occurred to me that it is something I should try to stop. No one, including my dentist, has ever said a word to me about it.

Cheek biter and teeth clencher/grinder.
And I'm married to my dentist!

We have often asserted and we affirm it yet again that no fact in history is better attested than the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It must not be denied by any who are willing to pay the slightest respect to the testimony of their fellow men. That Jesus, who died upon the cross, and was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, did literally rise again from the dead. (excerpted from Dance Your Shoes Off, Second Baptist Church)

And, jcm28, I, too, quit biting my fingernails after the age of 50! Not sure why I stopped doing that, but the cheek biting never stops!

I do this all of the time and never thought a thing of it. It's like tapping your fingers on something or whistling or humming. It's just something I do while I'm doing something else.

I don't really "bite". I kind of suck in my cheeks, bite down just a bit, let go, repeat. I was actually already doing it when I opened this thread, LOL.

Only once I opened and saw people talking about it like it was a problem, I stopped.

It doesn't hurt. I've never hurt myself doing it. It's just a boredom or annoyance thing, I guess. Because my legs are acting up right now and that's annoying me because I don't want to give in and go to bed so early. Or an inability to just do one thing at a time. I don't know. I never thought about it before.

The inside of my cheeks are perfectly smooth, though, so I mustn't be doing the same thing and/or as often as others.

I do it with the inside of my bottom lip, too.

But it's fun to chomp down on that smooth tissue and feel how it makes your teeth stick together.

I do my cheek & tongue. I also grind and clench my teeth in my sleep. It must bother my dentist because he brings it up every visit. He says I must be stressed out.
