I just laughed. I wanted them. I needed them. Those lovely Honeycrisp apples.

And when I got home, I sliced one of those babies up and sat down with some peanut butter. And then I just about cried. I can't taste them! I have been so sick with a terrible head cold and I'm so stuffed up. I can barley breathe. I can't taste!

I don't care. I'm still going to hoard them and hide them from my family. No one is gonna eat my almost $5 apples!

Yum! I wanted some this weekend but they were $4.49/lb and I just couldn't stomach that price.

Savor them once your taste is back

Ugh....I hate the cost of out of season fruit. We are the same way though...if we want raspberries, we will get them, even when a tiny pack of raspberries is $5!

Hopefully you will be able to taste soon!!!

Hope you feel better soon! I buy the gala apples at Aldi's. They are $2.99 for a 3lb bag. No matter how much I like the others I just cant pay $5 a pound!

And "they" wonder why there is an obesity crisis when one can buy a huge bag of chips or three apples for about the same amount. That bag of chips will feed more than the apples. I wish there was some way produce could be produced less expensively.it's sad because so many children grow up not knowing what an apple is and choose the chips over the fruit at school lunch. OK...that's my rant for the day! LOL

We have joined Bountiful Baskets and get the majority if our produce for 1/2 price. Granted, we get whatever they give us for the week, based on our contribution, but we have saved a lot of money and get better quality produce.

Enjoy those Honey-Crisps!

Well, to be fair, there are plenty of apple varieties that are much less expensive. Red and gold delicious, for example, are quite cheap even in the off season. Are they as tasty as some of the newer, expensive varieites? I think many/most of us would say no, and so we pony up for the "good stuff."

We also seem to have come to a place where most Americans don't think about seasonality of produce at all and want all the fruits and vegetables year round. And of course oranges shipped from Australia are a lot more expensive than ones from Florida.

But there are certainly fresh produce options available for lower prices.

Those honeycrisps are wicked good. I'd probably do that, too. Once or twice. I couldn't justify it every week. And I'd hide them from DH.

I've been getting Jazz apples
. They are pretty comparable to the Honey Crisp and a bit cheaper.

It has been a really tough apple season here in the UK - the weather was so wet right through last summer that the crop was decimated. I will only buy UK apples on principle - we are an apple growing nation why should we freight the things in - and so I have been going short of apples this winter and I miss them.

They are 4.99 a lb here but I do buy a few when I hit the market and savor them. I also like the Suncrisp and Candy Crisp varieties.

There is a way to do it. It's called subsidies. It isn't done because the top ten subsidized industries rule Washington and line our politicians pockets.

It's a game. You can't win. And no matter how much Michelle Obama touts eating better, the reality is that people who live in poverty are not going to get any real assistance from the government, because they aren't paying for their campaigns.

I have had some pretty tasteless apples this year so I hope it truly was your cold and not the apples. Hope you are better soon and can enjoy your treat.

And here I thought $2.99 for a pound of Honey Crisps around here was bad...I won't complain anymore after seeing what the rest of you have to pay for them.

My niece in Washington got me hooked on these when she was here for a visit a few years ago. Now Fiji and Honey Crisp are the only apples for us.

I never had honey crisp apples until late last year and I was so impressed with how large they were that I didn't realize the 3 HUGE apples ended up costing me $12.70! The apples were almost the same size as my dd's head! One apple made an entire apple crisp so I didn't have to peel 8 apples, only one so that was a nice bonus LOL

Alex M! $12???!!! I feel so much better about my apples now.

I usually settle for Fuji apples but, today, I just felt like a treat. Damn, can't even enjoy my treat.

And thanks to one of you, I'll be on the look out for those candy ones.

Honeycrisp apples are responsible for getting my DH to eat breakfast. I bought some after reading how good they were here on 2 Peas. I shared one with DH & he was hooked. Every morning now he cuts ones up to eat on his drive to work (he has a 45 minute drive).

When I ask him what he needs from the store he always says "don't forget the apples". LOL

They ARE expensive (here they're $2.99 a pound) but he's worth every penny. I guess I have nothing to complain about when they're "only" $2.99 a pound.

oh those honeycrisp!! I just paid $11 for apples the other day. I have one every morning cut up with tons of cinnamon. No other apples comes close to how good they are. I figure I would easily spend money on junk food..so I dont feel too bad about spending a little more on apples.

Our Aldi had 3lb bags of Honey crisp apples for 1.99! The apples themselves were smaller than the ones you usually find in the grocery, but I think there were 6 in the bag! Just a heads up...
