My DD turns 10(!!!!!!) tmrw and wants her ears pierced for her birthday. She also plays soccer and lacrosse. Right now is her "slow" season - meaning, she has practice maybe 1x a week.

I was thinking if I have them pierced tomorrow, it will be a full week before she has any sport activity, and when the time comes, I could just pull the earrings out for the hour and pop them back in after (I'd bring cleaning solution, etc so they aren't just rolling around in my hand ).

I called the jewelry store and the girl recommends I do NOT do that, even for the hour - she said they should stay in her ears for 6 week, period. She says they could close up in an hour!??!

If that's the case, do I have another option? Put tape over them? Otherwise, this kid will never get them done (she'll never have a 6 week off period), and she's been waiting for 2 years.

TIA!

Bridget =)

Just put tape over them. My daughter does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I just taped her ears when they were still new.

I was going to suggest the same thing. You don't really want to be taking them out at that stage....getting them back in might not be that easy

Today, I will be colouring outside the lines.

Girls in sports have been taping their earring for at least 30 years because its what I did as a kid and what my dd does now!

My dd got a third hole pierced about a month ago. She is on the competitive travel team and no earrings - no taping. She was about 10 days in and actually did take them out for the game. It took her quite a while to get them back in but it worked. She has to take them out every game (3x/week).

With sports there is never a good time. She was warned they might grow in. I think it will just take quite a while for them to heal.

Yes, ask the coach about taping.

And, I refuse to believe that she is 10. ???? Really? oy...

I would ask the coach about taping.

In our soccer league that is not an acceptable alternative.

They come out or she doesn't play is our rule.

Some leagues do not allow taping. AYSO banned tapping of ears about two years ago even though girls have been doing that since I was playing.

My DD12 who plays competitive soccer got her ears pierced last year. With our team, she was allowed to tape her ears, with earrings in, for practices. Most of the recreation leagues also allow the ears to be taped. Some of the refs allowed tape during "friendly" games, but the girls were never allowed to wear them, taped or not, during league games or tournaments. They had to come out or she did not play. I would suggest talking to her coach(es) to see what the local rules dictate. They should be familiar with it.

The idea of taking them out after only one week will probably not work for you. Her ears will still be very, very sensitive and it will be next to impossible to get the earrings back in again. We waited until eight weeks after piercing to take them out for an hour long game and it was still tough to get them back in. One week out sounds impossible.

Right now, we are only practicing and our spring season doesn't start in earnest until mid-April. We had my DD's ears pierced during the Christmas holiday last year and that gave her enough time to heal before she started playing in serious games.

My DD pretty much played year round and they wouldn't let the girls tape. So at 19, she still doesn't have her ears pierced.

After only a week, they could close within the one hour.
I would avoid the piercing.
Tape and band aids are not allowed here in soccer and lacrosse
