We're always complaining about having too much stuff. Here is a place to reduce your button stash, I found posted on Split Coast.
Our local Jewish community is looking for button donations. They are collecting 6 milion buttons for their Holocaust memorial. They plan on displaying the buttons at their synagogue in clear cylinders, so visitors can visualize the magnitude of a number like 6 million. If you would like to help out, you can mail donations to:
Congregation Beit Shalom
115 E. Paseo Ave.
Visalia, CA 93277
Thanks so much!!

Please verify that information as their website is silent about collecting buttons.

There is a contact number in the article linked. |

I talked to Rabbi Cynthia - Sweet Lady! their website is outdated because they are a small congregation and the ladies have been collecting buttons for years for their project - they have about 100,000 out of the 6 million they need. The youth group counts them. She says they would LOVE to be deluged with buttons!
So Peas, let's get out in force and make it happen for them! I KNOW we all have buttons in our stash! Who's with me on this? Please post to help keep this on top and visible.

So, You have to understand, I'm not Jewish. But this turned into a kind of spiritual experience for me.
First of all, I had my mother's button box, an elderly metal cake tin with a ship under full sail on the lid, and rust inside, about half full. She's been gone for 30+ years, but still, although I rarely sew and even more rarely use buttons on a layout, still, I lugged them around. Through 28 moves.
Then, when we lived in Germany, there were so many exotic foreign buttons, I bought more. (NOT having yet discovered a paper obsession)Anyway, I digress. OF course, in recent years, i've also bought scrapbooking buttons and stamping buttons and oh my goodness that's CUTE buttons.
So, I started going through them to put in a ziplock bag (or 3)
Not only are buttons round, and all colors of the rainbow, and shapes and sizes, I found flowers and music notes and train engines and dinosaurs. I found steel buttons, wood buttons,, bone buttons, carved buttons and the woven leather buttons off my dad's 1940s Sheepswool lined coat. There were sunbonnets and flowers and jeweled evening buttons and crystals.
As I sorted, I got the insight that our buttons are as diverse as we all are - and as diverse as the Jewish Holocaust victims that these buttons will come to represent. What richness the world has lost!
(All those wonderful buttons? Only 1.5 pounds.)

That's really a wonderful thing you are doing...
but I think you should make a layout using a bunch of those very unique buttons and maybe find a photo or two from an era of some of them to add to it. Toss some of the memories, descriptions or words about them on top and that would be really awesome!

Brilliant! I'll do it - as soon as I find the time - we are downsizing and preparing to move, so you can imagine not much scrapping is getting done!
