Would you rather receive a vintage silver cuff or a new piece? All things being equal of course,i.e, the style, condition, etc. The price is about as equal. There is some real history to the vintage piece--it's made by a well-known Taxco silversmith and the person receiving it would appreciate it (she is part Mexican), but she would also appreciate a new piece.
Your thoughts?
ETA: the only reall difference is the craftmanship: the vintage piece is much more detailed than anything I could get that's "new."

Vintage. I personally like the history of a piece and that it has a story.

I'd prefer vintage, but I have some friends who can't stand anything "used." They wouldn't appreciate such a wonderful gift.

I go strictly by the looks of the piece. I don't care about the story, the history, etc. If I like the style, workmanship, that's the piece I want. Oftentimes, it's the vintage piece that has a better look to it. |
OK. Newbie. This is how it works. If your post consists of 80% sanity, 10% stupidity and 10% all kinds of crazy, we immediately focus on the 20% b/c it discredits the 80%.

Vintage!
However, Angievp, if you have happened to already have purchased the NEW cuff and can't return it, I would gladly accept it. |

Oh, definitely, I know she will like the style-otherwise I wouldn't get it. She likes cuffs, but cuffs that are "carved" IYKWIM. It's a clamper cuff bracelet but it's also very sleek; the modern copies of it don't have the same workmanship as this one does.
I just wanted to get a sense of how prevalent (or not) "vintage sucks" and "I want new and shiny" versus "I have no objection to vintage" sentiment was. This person also likes things connected to Mexico, so it's a definite plus.

You would have to think about her personality.
Does she have mostly new thing.
Does she have many vintage items?
I would buy the vintage but, I gave up on buying new items years ago. Vintage is more fun to me.

I would hint around with the friend to see how she feels about buying used/vintage. Some people absolutely won't buy anything used. Other people have certain "rules".
My only rule is No Used Underwear. Gross!
But I know people who wouldn't buy used dishes of any sort. Meanwhile, my every day dishes are from Value Village. (They're vintage Homer Laughlin, and I LOOOOOOVE them.)
Strike up a conversation with her about thrift shops or something. See how she feels.
