I occasionally would run across an episode here and there on my local PBS station. One time I finally got to watch a full episode and got hooked. I'm working through the 2004-2011 series of episodes now on Netflix. I just learned they're filming a 6th season this spring.

I love the Doc Martin character and adore Aunt Joan. Louisa is great, but I'd like her to take a chill pill once in a while. The "character" of all the locals crack me up.

I like it too, as well as a few other Brit shows - Midsomer Murders being one I rarely miss. I even like the reruns of that one.

Me too Brooke! (Except it is spelled differently.) I was going to talk about the awesomely cool pair of purple Doc Martens I found in Kensington High Street back in 1992!!

Wingnut, you'd fly from Dulles to Heathrow, then hire a car, National Express coach or train. You can book seats for the latter two but both would involve several changes; a royal PITA. The easiest way is to hire a car- it's a 4 hour drive. It's a truly beautiful part of the world with many traditional English sea-side towns, b&b's, cream teas, pasties and fish & chips. You could go via Stonehenge if you so wish, Salisbury is also worth a visit.
When I was first married, I lived not too far from where Doc Martin is filmed. We had a great year living there.
Devon is also a beautiful county (where my DH is from) and if you're driving you'll be passing through it ETA, you'll be passing through it anyway, but it's easier to stop if you're driving!

The locals really do have a strong accent; DH's late Grampy was the stereotypical Devonshire farmer- solid stature, huge hands and a thick accent!

PM me if you've any specific travel questions, I'm happy to help.

I like the show but I am hypnotized by his ears and the way the light shines through them.

I like it, but sometimes it drives me a bit crazy. There are some episodes that just don't go anywhere (for me), but I do love the scenery.

I just love that character. I've actually worked with several doctors like him and I truly believe he along with them are on the spectrum. I was sad to see Auntie Joan go as well as Pauline and the return of Louisa and agree she does need to lighten up and just laugh at his antics.

If you get the chance check out the 2 movies that started it all:

Martin Clunes originally played a character called "Dr Martin Bamford" in the 2000 film Saving Grace and its two made-for-TV prequels, Doc Martin and Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie

The Doc is the "normal" one and the townspeople are all kooks and watch out for The Beast of Bodmin!

FYI, it is very funny to see him treat the doggies so crappy because in real life he is a dedicated animal lover on several committees and evidently holds some kind of degree involving animals (I don't remember what it is.)

Love Doc Martin! If I have to run on the treadmill, that is one of the very few shows that will hold my interest, but I get a few weird look from other people at the gym when I snort with laughter here and there.

My entire family (including my sister and my dad) are HUGE fans. What's this about another season? Are they really doing one? I thought it was all over.

Foyle's War is good too... I love Inspector Frost/Morse/Lewis and Midsomer Murders too... And Call The Midwives... New Tricks... Anyone remember Are You Being Served? Mr. Prime Minister? Well, now I'm having a Britcom craving...

At my parent's house one and mom's watching Doc Martin and dad's watching Big Bang Theory, and I'm just like hmmmm... That would be one weird crossover episode...LOL

If you're after some more British 'Gold' TV, here's a few more series- some are pushing 30 years old but they'e still great!

Comedy:
Only Fools and Horses - lead character Del is played by David Jason aka 'Frost'
Men Behaving Badly- starring Martin Clunes, aka 'Doc Martin'
'Allo 'Allo- farcical comedy set in France during the WW2
Keeping Up Appearances
The Vicar of Dibley

Drama
Silent Witness
Spooks
Hustle

There's a few to get you started

Oh please don't include 'Allo 'Allo in that list...it's awful!!

If you love Midsommer Murders you no doubt love Morse and it's follow-on series, Lewis.

keez221: What great information! Thank you! I'm saving that for later. I'm hoping to do this in the next 5 years or so. I'll spend the time saving and researching so I can enjoy the trip as much as possible!

Whoever said that the scenery is part of what makes the show so enjoyable to watch is dead on! I want to walk on the bluffs! Photograph the whole area and just sit and be still while looking over the gorgeous coast line.

Other shows: I *love* "The Vicar of Dibley". Geraldine Granger is so perfect in that role. As far as the other shows, I've also watched all of "Spooks" (known as MI-5 in the states). I *loved * that series so much but the constant killing off of favorite characters had me very anxious watching it after a time! LOL!

This is a link to an article about the filming of Doc Martin Season 6 this spring.

Dawn French is the actress in the role of Geraldine but it suits her perfectly doesn't it!

Vicar of Dibley is good... Anyone remember To The Manner Born or Blackadder? My grandmother is Mrs. Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances... I loved Coupling too - never got into Friends probably because of that...
