Stupid. I tripped or lost my footing going down the two stairs into the garage, and I was carrying Finn at the time so the only thought I had was "DON'T LET HIM HIT THE CONCRETE FLOOR." In my effort to keep him safe I had no way of breaking my fall, and went down full force on my right knee. I knew right away I'd done something bad. I literally fell and couldn't get up (and that old lady in the commercial was playing through my head on repeat, reaching for me).
We were home alone. Finn's head touched the concrete but just barely. He cried for a second from surprise, but didn't even hit hard enough to leave a red mark on his head - so my mom goal was achieved and he was safe. But all I could do was cry on the floor of my garage and wait for DH to get home. I tried calling him, knowing he was likely en route home anyway. He didn't answer even though I called several times and I was seriously considering calling 911.. I felt like an idiot, but the pain was so bad. DH called me back and I tried to tell him what happened. When he got home he took Finn (who was happily watching cartoons on my phone) and put him into his carseat and then helped me get up and into the car.
At the ER they had to wheelchair me in and they bustled me right into a room. The doc came in before I was even in the jonnie, poked my knee once or twice, and said he'd get me something for pain and about 30 seconds later a nurse came in and shot me up with Dilaudin.
End result is that right now they're calling it a sprain, but the doc said tendon/ligament stuff wouldn't be identifiable for probably 5 days and kneecap fractures can take 10 days to show up on xrays. I'm pretty certain something is Really Wrong with it. I'm in an immobilizer and on crutches which leads me to a question:
DH is taking tomorrow off of work and then it's the weekend, but what the hell am I going to do with Finn come Monday? I can't bear any weight on the leg, have to use crutches and an immobilizer, and it's my right leg so I can't drive. How am I going to take care of a young toddler by myself for an unknown length of time? I have to see an ortho next week to assess how much damage there is, so I'll know more then... but what the hell am I going to do? |

Poor thing!
I did something similar carrying my then 1 year old son to the car... I tripped over the edge of the driveway and came down hard on my knee (but he was completely fine, so mission accomplished!). I really thought I broke something but just bruised it badly. |

Ouch, ouch, ouch. I'm sorry.
Call in any friends and family you have living close by, if not, look into a housekeeping service, babysitters, something like that. You probably don't need home health care, just someone to chase the baby, bathe him etc and do light housework until you are back on your feet.
Not fun. | |

BF really gave you a great suggestion. I am very glad that Finn is OK, but I'm sorry to hear that you have a knee injury. Please let us know what the orthopod says Since you'll need help w/Finn, it's time to pick up the phone if you haven't already. Hoping that you're feeling comfortable w/the leg up and are able to get good rest. |

TV CAN be a babysitter. Your DH can spend the weekend setting up a safe area for the two of you where you can spend your days. Gates, furniture, boxes can all be used to make walls to keep a toddler contained and safe. Food and drinks can be put in a ice chest. Your motto is now KISS. Keep It Super Simple.
Regardless of what the doctor says next week, you aren't going to be better in a week. Strongly consider someone to come in and help you care for Finn, cook and clean. Call your church or a local church. They may have some ideas. Call a nanny agency. Call your friends.
Good luck. I was on bed rest with a toddler. Yikes. But we did it and DD was only a month early. You can do this. |

It seems impossible to take care of a toddler but you'll be fine. I had foot surgery and took care of my 2.5 year old ds and 4 year old dd by myself from day 3 on. That included grocery shopping and preschool drop offs on crutches with them and everything! I look back and wonder how I did it but somehow I did. Kids are pretty darn good with realizing that stuff too sometimes. Get some baby gates and have your dh make a safe area for him nearby the couch. Have easy lunches and snacks ready to go and you'll be set. |

I'm so glad to hear that Fin wasn't hurt during your fall. I hope that you recover quickly.
I agree with Carla, that this is a perfect time to call your friends/family/neighbors and ask for help. You really do need it. Don't feel guilty for asking. Just think of how you'd feel if someone you cared about didn't ask for help if they were in a similar situation to what you're in.

Well done on saving your little 'un from harm but sorry you're so hurt in the process!
I can't add anything to the good suggestions you've had other than to say that you'll have to ignore the non-essential tasks for a while, like dusting, and just let it go in your mind. You can catch up when you're mobile again. As long as the necessary stuff is taken care of the rest can wait.
It'll work out, don't worry. Hope you're healed soon.

I'm sorry you're broken!!frown:
Knee stuff is HORRIFIC. I am sorry. I hurt my knee in July and I am just feeling better. It was awful.
When my girls were 2.5 years old, I was pregnant with my son and on bedrest except for bathroom breaks. For 10 days. And I took care of them. DH prepared food, brought it in the bedroom. Put the TV in the bedroom and we basically camped out there. Girls were old enough at 2yo to respond to direction, so that was helpful. We watched a lot of TV.
It was hard and hateful, but when DH got home he took them outside and did stuff with them. Otherwise lots of books and TV.
So sorry! |

I'm sorry about your boo-boo. But glad you kept Finn from injury.
You might as well make your peace with two things:

2 - You really need to ask for some help.

Oh man, I know *exactly* how you feel! I had a bicycle accident in 2001 and landed on my left knee, just as you described. Like you, the ER said they would xray but that it was likely soft tissue damage that would require and MRI. They recommended I get in to see an ortho as soon as possible.
One MRI later and I was diagnosed with a torn ACL and other ligament tendon damage as well as cartlidge damage. After consultation with my ortho doc, I chose not to have surgery. I was out of the immoblizer in just a couple of days. It took about 2 years for my various muscles/ligaments/tendons to heal enough to not have occasional "collapses" from my knee giving out. I did have to give up anything that require a "planting, then twist" movement. I could still walk, run, swim, hike, bicycle, etc. I couldn't play basketball, tennis, etc. Since I didn't play those before my injury it wasn't a problem
Is there ANYONE, even a teenager who can come in for a few hours each day to help? Someone to do the chasing and running around the house for you?

Oh goodness! I am glad Finn is alright and hubby was not far away. One thing to consider is getting a walker rather than crutches. I know it sounds strange, but they are much more stable, you can move and let go of them as needed, (to pick things up, reach for things etc) without having to keep both hands on them all the time. The hospital gave hubby crutches when he broke his ankle and he almost hurt himself again trying to use them. We switched him to a walker and it was much safter, he could do more etc. We attached a bag to the front so he could go from one room to the other, put stuff in the bag and get back withouth trying to balance.
Definitly look into some help! I know it is hard to ask for, but this is exactly the time it is meant for!

I broke myself when youngest DD was 8 months old. I fell on the icy driveway and fractured my leg in 4 places. It was a long long time before I was walking again.
Definitely call in your favors for the first few days. You're still new on the drugs and you want to be sure they're working well enough to deal with your pain and not screwing with your head at all.
After that, I agree with the Pea (Michelle?) who suggested setting up a safe zone. Have DH bring you all the food, drink, and diapers you will need for your day, and then some. Keep your meds handy but locked up. And turn on the TV.
But use your friends and family if they will help you. It's very humbling to be on the receiving end of a favor, but take whatever help you can get. Worry about paying it back or paying it forward later. With DH, figure out how your going to let your helpers into the house without compromising your security or requiring you to get up to unlock the door.
I'm glad Finn is safe. I hope your knee isn't as bad as you fear.

We have often asserted and we affirm it yet again that no fact in history is better attested than the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It must not be denied by any who are willing to pay the slightest respect to the testimony of their fellow men. Oh boy, my left knee twinged when I read this, because it is the knee that has BTDT. FORTUNATELY, mine was on carpet on a wood floor, not bare concrete. I was carrying my 6 pound Dachshund Michel in my right arm and was screaming inside, "Don't fall on Michel!".
Fortunately, he landed very softly with my hand under his body. He probably thought "wheee, this is fun!" He walked around wagging his tail and wanting to "kiss" me. I had to just lay there a while until the pain subsided enough to get up. I had carpet burn in both knees and my left hand in addition to knee pain in my left knee. Still, what I had was NOTHING compared to what you had on bare concrete.
I hope you haven't broken or torn anything, that it is just extreme bruising. That alone can hurt and take a while to heal but better than the alternative.
But, just ask for help and have DH spend the weekend getting an area set up for you and Finn. I'm so glad you were able to protect your little guy. |

I am sorry that you are hurting, but yay for the Mommy instinct that protected Finn. I slipped on the ice last year while carrying my toddler. My elbow took the brunt of the force and protected his head from hitting hard.
I like the idea of a safe zone in the house. You can probably get by without driving for a bit. Make up your shopping list and send DH or a friend. Or buy what you can from Amazon or grocery delivery place. My right foot is currently in a boot because of a stress fracture, but the orthopedist said I can take the boot off to drive where I need to go. Hopefully once you get to the orthopedist they will be able to help with ideas also. |

Oh my gosh honey! I'm so sorry that happened to you. Mad prop Super mom points for not letting him touch the floor but poor you.
I'm hoping for you that the pain and swelling go down tonight and it's far less damage than you originally feared.
I'd get the word out to friends, family, church, whatever your resources are. Put it on FB if you have to. Your DH is probably going to have to haul you to a few appointments here and there.
I think having a safe zone set up is super smart idea. I know it's easier said than done but make a cozy, contained corner with all your daily needs and enjoy cuddling and healing.
So sorry. This stinks. Silver lining that you might be healed up and back up and around before spring proper arrives. If one must cocoon I think winter is best for it. <Grasping>

LBP, that's not funny but it made me laugh. I'm glad you weren't more seriously injured!
Thanks for all your kind words and suggestions. I don't really have anyone who can reliably help me. Right now i don't know what our plan is.
The orthopedist looked at my hospital chart this morning and wants to see me first thing Monday morning, so hopefully I'll know more then. But realistically they won't be able to diagnose anything soft tissue-y without an MRI, so I'm not super hopeful I'll have an answer.
I haven't even tried to get downstairs today. It was nearly impossible to get up the stairs last night and I'm not eager to attempt it again.
Again, thanks guys. In the grand scheme of things I'm really most grateful that Finn didn't get hurt. Me getting hurt is an inconvenience, and it sucks, but I never would have forgiven myself if he'd been injured. |
