Thanks so much for all your prayers and positive thoughts. Mum had her surgery this afternoon. It took almost 4 hours, but she came out of the recovery room wide awake and waving at us! Because they injected some dye into her to find the lymph nodes they wanted to remove, she is smurf blue! The surgeon expects that it will last about 48 hours and she is the bluest patient she has ever had. When she got back to her room, all the nurses had to come in to see this blue patient. Luckily, mum had good humour about it all though she refused to look in a mirror. We were totally suprised to see her in such good form. The surgeon believes they got it all and she should have a nice recovery. They aren't going to hurry her out of the hospital because of her age, so she should be in until the tubes come out on Wednesday. She was her bossy self telling us who to phone and when it was time for us to leave. Hopefully, she will continue to stay upbeat and improve every day. They did warn us that she could go up and down and that the 3rd day post op is often the hardest, but so far so good. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
My mum, who is almost 80, found out about a month ago that she has breast cancer. It is definitely confirmed in one breast with changes indicitive of cancer in the second breast.
She is having a double masectomy this afternoon. The doctor figures it will take about 3 hours, all going well.
My mum has some underlying health issues that put her in a bigger risk factor for strokes, heart attacks or death during surgery. We have been warned of those risks. This is due mainly to her high cholosterol and blood pressure, but she also has "old peoples" leukemia and malignant hyperthermia. Both of those are managealbe, but still pose added risk.
It was decided that the masectomy was the best way to go as the surgeon and cancer specialist felt the treatment would have been much harder on her than the surgery itself.
We just lost my dad last year and I am not ready to lose my mum too, so please, any prayers and positive thoughts would be so greatly appreciated. My mum's name is Kathie. Thank you so much. | |
