Update: she made her flight. Her grandfather got her there. She was in great spirits. I just saw her awhile ago and she looked happy. She's staying with her bff on the team. Seems like a lot of mamas are gonna make sure she is set for the weekend.
My daughter just told me one of our travel cheer members may not make our competition in Dallas. Why? Her mother is still drunk from last night.
This poor kid is trying to get to the airport in Virginia to catch her flight. By herself. She is a sophomore in high school. I'm so pissed for this girl.
There's a private message group on twitter of about 10 kids on the team; they and their parents are all rallying to get her from the airport, hotel, food paid for and whatever else we can do.
I can't even imagine how this girl feels. |

I had a college friend whose mother pulled stunts like this. With hindsight, I realize the mother was trying to sabotage the girl from success and even, having fun.
I wish there had been some way to help her more or something, because eventually she gave up trying.
So I'm very glad you all are trying to help this girl out. Sounds like she needs the support.
Please keep an eye out for signs of the mother sabotaging this girl. 30+ years later, I still think about my old friend and wish I could have helped her.

Mallie....I wouldn't be suprised if that mom is still sabataging her daughter. Just in different way.

Bless that little girl's heart. I am sure she is mortified.
to you for helping her out. Where is her daddy? Sounds like the mother doesn't deserve custody of her, she sounds like a crappy role model.
Please let us know how it works out! |

It is such a tragedy when good kids try to do healthy activities and stay out of trouble, and the parents have no idea how lucky they are, and continue to be self-absorbed. We have kids in our band and color guard whose parents have never, ever shown up for anything. I understand working, I understand having other kids to keep track of. But never finding a way to see your child perform in an activity?!
This little girl must have a sucky life with a mother experiencing such deep and drastic issues that she is in that condition. Sometimes we see those beautiful faces and have no clue what they face when they walk back in the door of their home. One of the reasons I don't think I could be a teacher is I can't imagine knowing what is happening with these poor kids and have it not be serious enough to get CPS involved, yet knowing they are having a horrible childhood.
Hoping she makes it to the event. Keep us posted. And now you all know you need to keep an extra eye out to make sure her needs are covered whenever she's participating in a team event. |

I wonder if the mother is a regular drinker or was this just an uncommon event after a night out? Either way it stinks. to you all for helping this poor girl.
If it is sabotage, I hope she can rise above it and not give up on herself. |

I can't even imagine what type of person thinks it's OK to have kids and then treat them like this. Poor kid....I'm sure this is not the first time her mom has been too drunk to function.
I bet this child has helped her drunken mother to bed and made excuses for her absence from events, more times than she can remember,..children of alcoholics have to grow up way too soon.
She must be terrified. It's hard enough to get to the airport and catch a flight when you're an adult. How awful for her to be trying to do this on her own. I hope she makes it in time. So unfair.

So sad for this girl. My BFF in HS was in similar situation and I had no idea.
Just like this girl, her parents paid for expensive activities but failed to support her doing them.
My friend's mom had good intentions but was in too much pain and could only keep herself moving. If there's any good from it my friend is incredibly self reliant and responsible.
I hope she made the flight!

I'm glad this is out in the open now so the team is aware of what is happening. This girl needs the support of stable adults, so hopefully there will be at least one mother in the group who will develop a relationship with her. Life is pretty horrible growing up in a home with an alcoholic parent. I wish someone had helped me, so I guess I have a bias in this situation. I hope she made it to the competition!

I am so sorry to hear about this! I hope she got there okay.
This situation reminds me of a girl I had in my 5th grade class. Her mother was an invalid because alcoholism had destroyed her health, and this 10 year old took care of her mother and her younger sister. We didn't know about her situation until midway through the year because she was always clean and made awesome grades.
That was about 10 years ago, and I still wonder about her to this day. |

I feel for the child, but I also feel the adult mother who is still a child herself. She must have a serious addiction, maybe someone could help to connect her with AA and AlAnon for her family members. It is such an insidious disease that when it shows itself publically like this, the bottom is very close. I am not sticking up for the mom, I am just saying that she needs help.
@@@@@@@@@@@
As a daughter of two alcoholics, I agree with this. The mother needs help, not condemnation.
I'm confused why if all these cheer patents knew the situation why none of them stepped up and offered her a rid to the airport? |

I'm so glad she made it, hopefully she's also found a whole bunch of new moms who will mentor her more than her own mother does.
I also hope her mom gets her act together and gets some help, but substances abusers rarely do that at the suggestion of others. They only do it when they hit rock bottom.
