Does anyone know of a tutorial for Photoshop Elements 11 preferably free for one.. using the program and two... all I really want to do is put two photos on 1 4x6 so I can upload them to send to be printed...I just can't get figure it out...guess it would help if I knew anything about the program...I have some of KB's templates and followed her tutorial but she uses photoshop and everything looks so different on elements....I feel so computer stupid right now!

I am using a mac and would like to be able to just put some smaller pictures on a 4x6 to send to Costco for printing....I am wanting to put a Disneyland style PL from a trip two years ago I can print 2 pics on a 4x6 but they are smaller than a 3x4 using iPhoto thanks to Mercy Tiara she has instructions on her blog but I have so many pictures I want to be able to include a lot of them in my album using the different sizes...

Thanks Peas!

I can't help with the PE part, and it probably makes no difference, but I print this size all the time at CVS.

I use Photosheet, but I would think regardless, the two photos on the 4 x 6 have to be 4 x 3. In Photosheet, you would click prompts to "rotate photo" if it weren't the right orientation when you put two in them, I am guessing there's a way to do that in Photoshop Elements?

ali edwards might have a tutorial or cathy zielske. the crop and move button are/look the same in both programs. create a new 4x6 at 300 dpi
open picture, click crop button, click and drag to crop, click check mark to complete. click on move tool, click and drag picture to the blank 4x6 document. repeat for the second image. make sure your 4x6 and your pictures are both 300dpi. It saves you from having to resize it. for image size go to edit-image size. it will tell you. when you crop at the top of the program you can enter dimensions and dpi when you crop.

What peasacake said - but you have to save your image as a jpeg before you will be able to upload it to Costco. I generally save mine in the best quality.

I just did a tutorial for this in Lightroom for my Project Life lesson a couple of weeks ago, and on the lesson page I also linked up a tutorial for doing it in Photoshop/Photoshop elements (I show it in Elements).

I hope that helps!

Yeah, like what Peascake said. I open both my pics (I actually do one at a time) but you'll have your two pics down in your work bin dock thing. Grab the pic - choose the crop tool. Write in your dimensions - 3x4 or 4x3 and set it at 300dpi. Crop. Do both photos. Then open a new document - 4x6 at 300 dpi. Drag and drop each photo onto your 4x6 canvas.

You can choose to rotate a pic and do a vertical and a horizontal 3x4 on a 4x6 but I just always wait until I have two of each orientation and so that I don't have go rotate anything, which isn't a big deal anyway (but you have to rotate the layer only, not the full canvas) - but if I'm doing 2 3x4 landscape then i do a 4x6 vertical canvas and if I'm doing 2 3x4 vertical I do a 4x6 horizontal canvas.

Getting them cropped at 3x4 at 300 dpi before moving them onto the 4x6 canvas is key.

Now I print at home so I can't say what you'll do next. I agree that you'd just save it as a 4x6 jpg.

I do the same thing as BrianaJ, but I go to image, resize, and make sure I enter 300dpi and then use the crop tool. Ali does have a tutorial on her blog, that is how I learned to use the crop tool.

I do it using clipping masks on a blank white file.

File>new>blank file
Resolution should be 300 dpi
Size to 4x6 (or 6x4)
Color should be RGB color

Now in layers palette, open a new layer.

On the tool bar, click on the rectangular marquee tool.
Mode: fixed size
Width/Height: 4x3 (or 3x4).
Feather: 0 pixels.

Now click on the corner of your blank white file. You should have a flashing dashed rectangle that is 4x3.

Click on the paint bucket on the tool bar.

Move paint bucket icon to flashing rectangle and click. The flashing rectangle should fill with color. Ctrl-D to turn off rectangular marquee selection.

To create a second 4x3 clipping mask, click on the move tool, then hold down the alt key while you click on the rectangle and move it. The alt key means you move a copy, not the original colored rectangle. Move the boxes to fill the 4x6 background.

Move the photos you want into the image, putting them so that each one is directly above one of the clipping masks (colored rectangles) in the layers palette. Now, holding the alt key down again, move your mouse to the line between the photo and one clipping mask (in the layers palette). When two overlapping circles appear on the line, left click. The upper layer (the photo) will now be clipped to the 4x3 rectangle in the layer below. You can resize and move the photo around as needed now.

I use this for 2 4x3's or to put any combination of small photos on a 4x6. Just change the size used for the marquee tool and you change the size of your clipping mask. You can also put 4 2.5 x 3.5 photos on a 5x7.

Hope that isn't too confusing.

I don't crop the photos. I open the photo, go to Image>resize and enter the desired dimensions (ex. 3x4) at 300 dpi. I create a new 4x6 canvas and place the 2 photos there. I save them as JPEGs and either print them at home or send them to an online printer. It is fast and easy.

With the clipping tool, the photos aren't cropped. You can shift and resize them as desired--only the window through which you view them is fixed to 3x4. Using the clipping tool just makes it extremely easy to zoom in or nudge the main subject over a bit without worrying about the size.

I get to this step and get stuck...ugh...at least I am able to do it by cropping the photos but if I can do it like your suggestion sounds like it might be easier...I will keep playing around with it..thanks

ETA: ok i get to where I can shift the photo around but how do I resize...meaning shrink it down to get more of the pic on to that smaller surface i am stuck there...it lets me move it around not resize it......

Oh this is interesting to hear how others do it. When I said I use the crop tool, I don't actually crop - I select the entire picture and crop it to 3x4 and its like resizing it. Unless I truly wanted it cropped then I would actually crop, ha, I mean crop it smaller but it would still show up as 3x4.

@scrapcollectorcrazy7 sorry I didn't see your question before I went to bed.

What I do to resize or shift is select the photo I want to resize by clicking it in the layer palette. Then I click on the move icon in the tools layer. To zoom out, so you can see the edges of the photo, click crtl -. (To zoom back in, use ctrl +). Then you should be able to see the corners of the photo and shrink it down to the size you want (or make it bigger). You can click on it to drag it if you want to shift it over, or just use arrow keys not that the photo is selected.

Let me know if you have any other questions. And I should add that almost everything I know about photoshop I owe to Jessica Sprague!

ETA: you can save the file with just the clipping masks then in the future, you just drag and drop photos in, save with photos as jpeg and you are done. (The template is saved as PSD file.) It gets really fast after you've done it a couple times. Also makes it easy to fit odd shapes on a 4x6 since you can make the clipping masks any size and combination--2 1x3s, a 2x3 and a 4x3 for example. I know you can do this with cropping too--but in this method, you do it once and save the mask template to reuse. I'm lazy!!

Another Picasa user here too. It is very easy to do. Go into your Picasa picture folders. Make sure they are both the same orientation. Highlight the two you want to collage together. Click the little collage button at the top. Make sure to choose the correct size and orientation for your collage, then click create. Voila! I have PSE but am not very proficient at using it. So I always go do this in Picasa.
