A few years ago we remodeled our house. We went from 940 square feet to 1600 square feet, so while we got a much bigger house than we were used to, I know it it is not big by many standards. Our house is not fancy by any means....we do have nice stuff - nice hardwood floors, granite countertops, nice kitchen cabinets, etc., typical stuff that you would put in a house if it were being remodeled.

So anyway, yesterday I came across the architects plans in the basement, just rolled up and laying on a table in our storage area. I thought it might be kind of cool to take the first page of the plans with the official stamps, picture, and signatures, etc., and frame it in a poster frame. It is 24x36. On it, it says "Ourlastname Residence". my daughter said that sounded fancy, and I don't want to come off as pretentious. I just like the plans and thought it would be cool to have that page hanging somewhere. I was planning on hanging it in our dining room, which is catch all room/scrap room/sometimes dining room. it is very informal.

So, yay or nay? Be honest, I can take it.

I don't think it sounds pretentious at all...unless you changed it from OurLastName Residence to OurLastName Estate!

My friend did that at a house that they remodeled. When they sold the house they left it for the new owners.

Well, phew! I thought it was a neat way to document the house, but when my daughter "it sounds fancy" I stopped in my tracks a little. My husband and I bought this tiny house because it was what we could afford and we always said that when we could afford to build on we would. that took longer than we expected, but we love our home. I hope we spend the rest of our days here.

Not pretentious.

'Last name' residence is a common way for architects to label drawings. Probably the most common way for residences to be labeled. Sometimes the address is used but not as often on residences.

Just don't pick a name for your house, that can be pretentious. (I'm joking )

Also, if your plan is looking a little worn you could ask for a new reprint of just that page. It should not cost too much ( and if you tell them why it may be free )

I hope an architect or someone related to an architect chimes in. I remember our house plans said,"THE KENNEDY MANSION". Well not our real names, of course, our names.

We charged $5.00 per sheet for the blueprints. $10.00 if in color. It was a very very common request.

If it's got signatures you probably should keep it as record and frame a copy. Kinkos or other copy service can make a full size or reduced color copy. Unless you're related to the architect its cheaper than asking them to dig through their files and order a new one. Plus they won't stamp and sign just so you can display it.
A reduced size print might look better than full size if you're using it as art.

And I love it when homeowners are willing to pass on things like that or old photos of a home on to the new owners.

I know a family who now has some old photos of their home in their foyer because the sellers were nice enough to give them copies of the photos.

Our house was built in 1960. The contractors original "marked up" copy is framed and hanging in our hallway. The previous owner left it for us. It sure came in hand when we did our kitchen remodel.

We live on 5 acres. DH had a copy of the "Record of Survey Map" from 1960 framed for me.

No, I don't think you are pretentious.

maybe when your daughter said "fancy" she may not have meant "pretentious" ( ask her if she knows what pretentious means))

You do what you think is a good idea. we have our blueprints, and I like them but we don't have room to put one up on the wall.

My daughter said "fancy" and I took it to mean pretentious based how she said it. Like, "oooohhh, fancy." She did not use the word and does not know what it means. I am not insulted/offended.

I did it. I bought a poster frame and put the original in there. I like the original being in there because it has the architect's signature, the signature of the person from the city who approved it, some of the handwritten "notes" from the architect, etc. The architect is the husband of a good friend of mine from grammar/high school. The friend and I get together twice a year, and last summer, for the first time since we built the addition she came for a visit to our house. it was neat to show her and her children what her husband/their father had designed.
