I brought my new car in today to have the dealership put my license plates on. When I pulled in there was a big screen that said "Welcome xxxx". At first I was thinking it was neat and good customer service. Then I started wondering how thy knew it was me.....there must be some sort of chip in the car. Now I am thinking it is a little creepy. Does anyone else find this a little disturbing?

My company always welcomes our guests on a big screen tv in the lobby. Why is that creepy?

I hadn't even talked to anyone yet. I had just pulled in. How would they have known it was me unless there is some sort of device in my car. I felt a little like I was being tracked. It is all good. I still love this dealership and will continue to come here. I just feels weird that they knew who I was.

Did you have an appointment scheduled or was this a random drive in? Appointment, okay; random, creepy.

edited since we were typing at the same time ~ no appointment, that's unsettling to me. I'd be asking how they knew. And was it just your first name or first and last? I *might* be okay with first, but definitely not whole name.

But, out of curiosity, why do you have the dealership put your plates on instead of doing it yourself?

It was out running errands and stopped by. It wasn't pre planned. It is a new car so I guess that is why the plates get mailed to the dealership. This dealership always puts them on for me.

We need more back story. If they had your plates, they knew you were coming in, right? You spoke to someone there and said, "Yep! I'll be in on Tuesday!" or whatever, right?

They called me on Monday and say my plates were in and I could drop by anytime. No scheduled appointment. The only thing that would identify my car from the outside were the incredibly faded temporary tags.

What kind of car is it? I remember seeing these billboards a while back ...

Billboards that know you by name

Each day, it seems, marketers go further in their quest to deliver messages so engaging and personalized that one cannot help feeling special. The latest step will be seen today in four cities when Mini USA begins delivering custom messages to Mini Cooper owners on digital signs the company calls “talking” billboards.

The boards, which usually carry typical advertising, are programmed to identify approaching Mini drivers through a coded signal from a radio chip embedded in their key fob. The messages are personal, based on questionnaires that owners filled out: “Mary, moving at the speed of justice,” if Mary is a lawyer, or “Mike, the special of the day is speed,” if Mike is a chef

If I had an appointment with them, not creepy. But a random just walk in, yeah, I find that creepy. What kind of car it is? I think I want to avoid owning one.....

I vote creepy.

I also think it's weird that your plates got mailed to the dealership. Don't you just pick them up at the DMV when you register the car?

It's like the Progressive snapshot thing.

I work for a competing insurance company. We have a similar program and actually came out with it before progressive, but my company realized once people figured out how much information those gadgets collect some customers might not be too keen on it. It's still offered, just not promoted in a big way.

Everyone who knew who I worked for asked why my company didn't have something like it. It was such an awesome thing! I asked them if they realized exactly what information was being collected and once they thought about it they realized it is a bit big brotherish. My own DH was all for it too; I told him no way. They don't need to know everywhere I drive, where I park, shop, etc.

Creepy....I'm in Minnesota and new plates are mailed to the dealership. Not sure why. Also, here the plates stay with the car. In Wisconsin when you sold a car you kept the plates.

Neither, but I would not be impressed to see my name on a public billboard without my permission.

We keep our plates from car to car here, so I never had to deal with going anyway to get new plates (Well, unless I wanted a specialized plate, but then it would be mailed to me.).

But yeah, a little creepy in my book.

And here when you get a new car plates are mailed to the dealership, you have to go pick them up and they just put them on for you.

Creepy.

A better idea to use their technology to impress me and not stalk me ...
Would be to have my name come up on the service tech's screen and then the service tech can call me by name like he remembers me.

For all I know, my service tech has this technology because he always calls me by name. LOL

Usually temporary plates are taped to the back window and lower dashboard of your car.

So how could a license plate scanner get your info that way?

I'm going with radio chip in your key.

Which is so easy to read by anyone who has a reader, I refuse to use any of those swipe style credit cards--I'm not noticing as many of them around these days.

Please, when you find out how they got your info, please let us know!

Is your new car a "push to start" meaning you have a key fob? If so, it most likely has an RFID chip in it.

If this kind of thing freaks you out, you may want to stay away from Disney since that's how ALL their technology is going.

This place would be a whole lot nicer if some took a chill pill. It would be even better if a few choked on it.

Creepy, invasive, and overbearing.

First of all, Id be a little ticked even if I had an appointment and they put my name up on a board.

Secondly, I do not like being tracked by anyone at all.
