We are in San Diego for a vaca. I'd like to go see seals and tide pools. What is a good beach to do that? We don't want to swim, kayak, or sit on the beach - nothing requiring a bathing suit essentially. What breach do you recommend? We have a car and we'll need to get lunch and maybe walk around. I'm thinking LaJolla but I don't know any more than that. I'd love some help and suggestions.

The La Jolla Children's Pool for seals.
Sunset Cliffs for a beautiful view.

Seconding The Cove. Oceanside has a nice pier with a restaurant at the end, but no tide pools or anything like that. La Jolla has a good "exploring" beach.

Definitely La Jolla Children's Pool. The seals live there, plus there are quite a few shops and restaurants. If you want a pretty beach to hike or take a walk, try Torrey Pines Reserve.

The Cove and the Children's Pool in LaJolla are just a short walk from one another.

I went to school in LaJolla and I still miss it!

If I win that 200+ million dollars in the lottery tonight, we're buying a home either there or in Del Mar.

If you want a really cool tide pool experience, go to the Birch Aquarium near UCSD. They have outdoor tide pools where you can touch the sea life.

I am sitting in a hotel room waiting for my turn in the shower because we just got back from the Cove in La Jolla. We did snorkeling. You will see a lot there.

The cove in La Jolla has sea lions and I think Tidepools.
If the Tidepools aren't there they're a block north

Yep, this is what I meant about a block north

We love going to Coronado Island as well. We make it a point to go every time we are in Southern Cali.

While I am a fan of the birch aquarium and am a member, those are just simulated tide pools like you can see at any nice aquarium, Cabrillo has real tide pools where you are not guaranteed to see anything but imho are much cooler if you are into nature. Birch aquarium has a killer view of the coast though!
