Like SuperCuts or HairZoo? I desperately need a haircut. I always wait too long.

My usual person (who does it out of her house) is in the middle of a move. She also has a baby and a full time job so I really don't want to bother her. She is beyond stressed.

She is packing but is still waiting for a closing date.

I'm at the point where I really need a trim. I have wavy/curly hair that I wear in long layers that has lost all shape. I feel really ugly.

Can I trust these places? I know it's hair and it will grow back but i don't want to look worse walking out than I did walking in.

Our experiences have had far poorer results than nice cuts! DSs just had back-to-school cuts and received the worst cuts ever. My younger DS has several chunks of hair missing on each side of his bang area.

If you're unhappy with yourself right now I would ask friends, etc for salon referrals.

when I have been desperate I have gone to Super Cuts, Fantastic Sam's, etc., etc.
I've never had a haircut so bad I couldn't deal with it, some better than others, but nothing I couldn't work with.
I will admit though, it is kind of hit and miss as far as the stylist's go. Some of them are really good, and I would go back to them again, but by the time I need to go, they have moved on to somewhere else

When I need a quick trim, I absolutely go there. For real haircuts? No way. I have a stylist for those. But for a quick, get rid of bad ends trim? No worries. They haven't effed up that yet.

Happy now?

I think it depends on the cut. If it's straight hair and you're just trimming it, I'd say no problem. If you have a "style" or something more complicated, I'd probably get a referral from someone. My sister, who is SUPER picky about her hair, gets it cut at a walk-in place. The stylist is really, really talented and believes in inexpensive haircuts for all (he's kind of a hippie) and won't work in fancier, more expensive salons. So, she and all of her friends go to him.

What I'm trying to say is that it's not a given that you'll get a bad haircut at a walk in place, but I wouldn't go without knowing what I'd be getting.

DH uses Supercuts - I think he's only had 1 bad cut in many years.

I have gone to them a few times, with very decent results.

We have a Super Cuts but I haven't ever been there. I have frequently walked into Precision 6 or JCPenney and been very happy with my hair cuts. But I wear my hair pretty plain so it's nothing too difficult to do.

I've gotten haircuts at Supercuts, Great Clips and Hair Cuttery. I've gotten both good and not so good cuts at all of them - it depends on the stylist. However, I'd say many of the stylists at these places are just as good as the ones who work at the better salons in my area. The good haircuts outweigh the bad, though, and in most cases the not so good cuts are a result of my failing to communicate what I want properly. That's the great thing about using the same person - they generally know what you want. My worst haircut, however, was from a pricey salon, not from a walk-in place. And FWIW, I don't have easy hair - part of it is stick straight and the other parts curl in two different ways - one side does ringlets, one side does waves, and the underneath is straight - a stylist's nightmare.

I've done the walk in at Wal*Mart and it was a surprisingly really good cut!

I take all 3 of my kids to Supercuts and they have always had good cuts.

I have gone a few times over the years and most of the cuts have been ok. There were 2 times it was horrible (once at Supercuts and once at Hair Cuttery). Supercuts the girl cut it crooked and I didn't realize until the next morning. I went back to my regular stylist and she fixed it for me then scolded me! The Hair Cuttery incident was before I got my regular stylist and I went in for highlights. The color was not enough contrast for me and was not what I wanted. I called them back the next day and went back in, had it redone, and got exactly what I wanted. They made the situation right so I don't hold that against them.

For me, though, I go to a regular stylist. Its worth the additional cost for me. If its just a trim of an 'established' cut I think they are ok.

Do you have Regis Salons near you? I have never had a bad cut there, and they usually take walk-ins. Kind of a step up from SuperCuts or something like that.

You could also probably call around to some nice salons and see if they have any openings- I usually can get in just fine without a prior appointment, especially on a weekday.

My stylist was on maternity leave for over 2.5 months. The one girl that works for her couldn't fit me in, so I went to Holiday Hair. I did not get lucky. It was horrible. Luckily, she mostly just did a trim, but she did cut off too much of the one side where it blends from bangs to side. She basically cut my bangs straight across even after I told her they taper and blend on the side. Now I have to start over with the blending.

The kicker was that I couldn't even go to the grocery store or anywhere after the appt. It was supposed to be a cut & style, but all I got was a quick curl on each side & no hair spray or anything. My hair was frizzy before I got to the car. I looked about 10-15 years older coming out than when I went in. I flat-iron my hair, and so does my hair stylist. This place charges an extra $10 for flat-ironing. They also charged an extra $1 for using conditioner when they washed my hair. Needless to say, I was not happy & won't go back. About 20 years ago, this chain was quite the place to go for our area.

I thought my hair stylist was getting expensive, but now I appreciate her a lot more after this experience. When I leave her place, I don't have any reservations about going out in public.

I do all the time at Great Clips. They have an online check on so I do that a few minutes before walking in and I get in before others who walked in after I checked in even if I am not physically there. Love that!

They also keep "haircut records". I've only had one slight disappointment and it was totally minor. I should say I'm not picky about my hair, because it's hair. It'll grow back. I am a wash and dash out the door kind of girl.

I'm guessing they would be ok for a straight cut. I took our dd when she wanted to donate for Locks of Love as our usual person couldn't get her in.

The results were HORRIBLE. I bet they didn't donate her hair. I stood and watched in horror. After the girl finished we left and I begged our regular person to squeeze her in. It was just sad.

My experience has been hit or miss. It sounds like you'll be needing a new stylist since your current one is so busy. Maybe this would be a good time to ask your friends for referrals?

I've been going to SuperCuts off and on for over 30 years, and in that time, I've only had maybe 3 bad cuts. My hair is straight, short, and medium in thickness, so pretty easy to cut. I went to a stylist for 3 or 4 years during that time, and her cuts were hit or miss.

I once tried Fantastic Sam's, and I would never go back. But it depends on your type of hair, texture, style, etc. For me, SC has saved me so much $$$ and fuss. (I also have a no-nonsense style- neither my avatar, nor siggy shows how I wear my hair now).

I used to ALL the time.

It was really hit or miss. It entirely depends on the stylist you get. The best I had was a stylist who worked in a very high end salon most of the week as a colorist. She took a job at one of these walk in places to keep her skills up. She was fabulous! I am now reminiscing about when I spent less on my hair! Those were the days! LOL. I better call and get an appointment for my next DevaCut, now that I think about it.

I do. I'm not super picky and always get the same cut by the same girl. I'm happy to not be paying more than $29 including the tip.

I could get a crappy cut in a high dollar place or a good cut in a less expensive place. It's all about the person, not their chair and decor.

I have worked for Great Clips for 12 years. I worked full service before that, but once I had kids, the walk in kind of place worked better for me.

Yes, you would feel more comfortable getting to know your stylist.
Yes, sometimes there are complaints. Our shop does about 1200 cuts a month, and might get 3 complaints. All complaints are taken care of, either the cut is straightened (if crooked), shortened (this is most often the complaint, customer decided they would like it shorter), or the customer is given a free cut for their next visit.

Good luck, I think you'll enjoy the experience.

Pretty much always. I'm not interested in paying more than $9 for a haircut. (Ah.... coupons.) My last cut was great. Three cuts ago was great. Two cuts ago I had the most judgmental stylist in the history of ever who didn't even do a good job on the cut.

Too bad she was the manager.

I recently got a great cut from a Korean granny who spoke about 15 words of English, in a walk-in salon in a little shopping center where my daughter takes ballet. She understood "long", she said, "I trim, make pretty", she pantomimed "layers", and she snipped away merrily leaving me with a nice 'do for a third my usual price at the fancy salon I usually go to. For the price I was very happy and the convenience can't be beat.

I only ever go to those places. I often find a great stylist who then leaves for an expensive salon, that is a bummer. I have pretty easy hair- long, all one length for years now, but even when I had complicated short styles I went there. My hair grows fast and so I'm pretty easy going about a bad cut- it grows back.

I gave up going to one of those years ago. My hair was always jacked up. I take my daughter there but it's only a bang trim and about twice a year the ends.

I got my hair cut at Fanstastic Sam's. One time. NEVER again. I left in tears with the "sytlist" laughing at me. I had to call another salon and thankfully found someone who could salvage what was left of my hair. I ended up with a pixie cut (which was all that could be done at that point) and felt so incredibly self-conscious for months until it grew back out.

Make an appointment in a good salon, even if you have to wait. It will be worth the wait.

Ha I always get my hair cut at the great clips in my Meijer. I don't have a stylist and just take whoever's available. I think the biggest thing in getting your haircut at places like this is to know exactly what you want. Bring pictures, don't be shy. If you're not happy once they're done say something! I've never had a haircut I didn't like! Here's one of my favorite cuts ever, that I got for five bucks!

I have used Fantastic Sams and Super Cuts for my boys. Both places, no matter who is cutting the hair, do an awful job. My boys hair is shaved short around the sides, then spikey on top. Every time my boys end up with patches of hair around the sides that are unshaved and pieces on the top that are longer. I have cut their hair at home and do a better job without any training. They cut my daughters straight hair ONCE and totally screwed it up (she just does a straight cut and nothing like layers or anything hard).

I now go to the hair school by my house and they do a much better job.

DH and our boys go to SuperCuts (when DH doesn't just buzz their hair himself!) For DD and I (who have very thick, temperamental hair) I have found a really good hairdresser Fiesta. They are walk in too but if I want to get in with Shannon I will make an appointment. He's awesome and I'll wait a week if I need to just to get in with him!

THIS! You cannot judge a haircut/stylist by the store name. I have friends who pay a high price for a haircut. Then complain that it looks bad.

DH used a Fantastic Sam's for years, and liked 2 of the stylists, one or both of whom always seemed to be there whenever he went in. Girls got their cuts there, too. Then it closed. No warning, no way to follow your favorite stylist.

So the girls go to a Great Clips now and DH found a barber he likes OK.

I found a stylist at a pricy salon who I like, so I've been going to her for a few years, but... yawn... she has no imagination! I haven't been happy with the cut or color the past 2 times, so I'm looking around again. Plus, the "salon experience" isn't all it's cracked up to be when the place is a zoo and the stylist is ALWAYS double booked ... even on a Tuesday.

Actually the Super Cuts does a better job than my stylist. They do exactly what the picture shows. My stylist always tries to "improve" on it and then I have to wait 3 weeks for it to grow out enough. (but she does color GREAT!)

We go to Great Clips. The stylists are usually... wacky... but the haircuts are typically fine.

I've never found the perfect stylist. Seems like they either have personality or talent, never both. I might enjoy sitting in the chair, but my hair just looks "meh" when I leave.

Or they might be a total zero in the personality dept, but my hair looks great. Which is a much better trade off, IMO.

Currently, my hair looks super cute, but the stylist was a nimrod. She wanted to know who did my highlights. Um yeah, I don't have highlights. That's how my hair grows. She didn't believe me. Why would I lie about that? And how can she not see the color is coming out of my head?

I walk-in. I quit with smartstyle because they tended to not listen.

Supercuts near me has been good for my boys and also I've gotten a couple really good cuts recently. As in, people asking me where it was cut...

I am admittedly not too picky though. I just want to wash and dry my hair and go.

I also dye my own hair....so far so good for that! (One awful Walmart trip at 1 am last winter, with orange hair, for a fix!)
