My google-fu is weak on this one: how would I go about identifying this thing growing in my yard?

So a few weeks ago I noticed something growing in my yard. It was about four inches across, had a domed shape, was very firmly attached to the dirt, had a papery outer coating, and felt dry. I thought it was a bit of tree root from a tree about 15 feet away.

Yesterday the lawn crew mowed over it and now it's burst open. Inside it is a brown powdery substance that looks exactly like cocoa.

I have NO idea how to google what this thing is. I want to know what it is and how to get rid of it!

Any ideas?

I didn't take any pictures of it before its encounter with the lawnmower.

Seriously y'all, it's like something out of a Stephen King novel though.

I think it might be a puffball. Thank you, I have never seen one of those before. You learn something new every day!

A mushroom?

I'd have thought it was a mushroom if it wasn't full of powder. I've never seen a mushroom like that! I could be wrong of course, I've just never seen it! I took a stick and stirred it up and the entire inside is powder. So weird!

"Pink stars are falling!"

I said the same thing

It is a mushroom. The powdery stuff is the spores.

My signatures are turned off,
so I have nothing cute to say.

yeah probably a puffball, I think they tecnnically are a mushroom though but I could be wrong..

a story. I lived with my grandparents for years, and even later spent my summers there... but anyway. when I was about 4-5 one of these showed up in the back field.. now, my grandmother was great, but in all honestly she had already raised her 5 kids, and had pitched in on the grands(my dad was her youngest) so maybe she was at the point to where she'd tell me anything to get me to behave, or to stop talking and asking questions etc.. lol maybe she always told this stuff to her kids too.. I dont know. but anyway. she told me that puffball in the field was the top of the devils head LOL and that he was listening to make sure I did what I was told and didn't tell any fibs etc an if I did he'd tell on me to her.. well you can betcha once I told the neighbor kids that, we checked on that thing EVERY DAY til it was gone LOL hahaha.. cracks me up. we were all too afraid of the thing to do anything to it,it was HUGE probably the size of a basketball.. course once it busted open she told me she was kidding me and it was just some kind of mushroom LOL

Yup we had those things in the field were I lived as a kid too. We loved the giant puffballs. we would watch it every day and we would chose to see who would win the honor of kicking that thing to death.
