On Friday I went and interviewed for a TA job. I got the call back today and I was given the job but I unfortunately didn't accept it because turns out, my score isn't high enough for this district. I didn't think I would get the job or I would have been extra careful at the beginning. It makes me sick to have to turn this down!

How could they offer you the job if your score wasn't high enough?

Yes, I'm confused too. Sorry you couldn't take it. That's a real bummer.

Consider me another who is confused about them offering a job when your score wasn't high enough. I guess I also don't get this:

I didn't think I would get the job or I would have been extra careful at the beginning.

Why would you NOT be careful from the beginning (I assume this is whatever you had to take to get the score you referred to)? If you wanted the job, why wouldn't you put forth your best effort? I don't get it.

Your post makes no sense. As an educator I would expect you to be more clear in your statements.

I think you are saying you had to turn the job down because the pay isn't enough? If so, I'm sorry and I hope a better opportunity comes along.

First of all, there is no need for all the rudeness. I may have not been clear but there's no need to belittle somebody.... Just Lizzy haven't we all had an off day? Just wondering!

I have just recently moved from Oklahoma (where in most cases, a Paraprofessonal is not required) to Florida where it is required. However, since I knew I was moving, I took the test so I can have it as a back up incase I wanted to go back to education. I didn't realize that each district had their own "version" of what they were accepting as a score. I was 8 points off. The person who interviewed me called me today and said I had the job but that she needed to verify my score. Needless to say, it wasn't high enough.

Can you retake the test?? Here in NYS paraprofessional refers to a teaching assistant, not a test. Our TAs have to have a 2 year degree and then hours of professional development. Our Aides do not.

Oh and I knew what you meant about being offered a job and then not being able to take it. Sometimes the person interviewing/hiring has to check on a lot of things.

I don't think most people were rude, just confused. (JustLizzy is rude all the time--except when she wants sympathy).

From your latest post, it sounds like you are talking about a paraprofessional exam. I didn't know that districts offered jobs before verifying transcripts, scores, etc. I'm sorry that you weren't able to take the job. If you can retake the test, that's what I'd suggest. Then, when another good job comes up, it won't be a worry. Hope you find what you want soon.

Will they let you retake the test before you have to turn down the job? Is the test only given at specific times/dates or can you take it anytime? If you can take it anytime, maybe you can study for the next few days and take it later this week.

Well, since I'm so rude all the time... up yours.

I happen to think an educator should speak and write clearly and in a concise manner. I'm tired of the "it's just a message board" mentality. This message board is where we "see" each other and first impressions ARE important. If you want to be respected as a professional educator, present yourself as one.
