I guess trying to push through a creative block may not have been the best choice. I just finished a layout that I started earlier today, and it was honestly the layout from hell. From trying to come up with a design, to attempting to execute it, then having to print the photos several times, only to realize I didn't even like those photos with what I had ended up creating. Then I had to scramble through iPhoto to find something else that suited better. Embellishing was like pulling teeth, and in the end all I have to show for it is a crappy layout that I'm certainly not proud of. It won't be making it onto my blog or gallery here, but well, I did it, it's done, and I'm not redoing it.
Sorry for the vent, but really, it's not like I can vent this to my husband, I think he'd just look at me like I had two heads.

Well at least you are persistent. Good for you!

I probably would have stopped and either completely re-done it, or possibly just start again with it another day.

It happens to me too every so often. I just put it in an album and move on. Better done than none as Lain Ehmann says.

I'd put it in my album. I bet you'll like it better after you step away from it for a while.

Occasionally, I have redone a page that I just hate.

I can't say that I've never done it... but what ALWAYS ends up happening is the page being redone. Never right away - I'll let it sit in the album for a while... maybe even a year. But it the end, it always gets ripped apart and redone. In fact, I'm working on a "re-do" right now and the next layout in line is another re-do.

I don't glue anything down until I am okay with the layout. If I hate how it is turning out, I try to figure out what it is that bugs me. The last time, I finally realized that it was the background paper. Once I had swapped that out, the layout came together so much easier, and I liked it a lot better.

Sometimes, though, I have to just set the layout aside for awhile and work on something else. If I still hate it, sometimes I start over and completely redo it.

You said you hated the pictures. You didn't say why you picked those pictures to begin with, but if it was to fit a certain sketch, maybe the sketch itself is the problem?

I always start with pictures that I love. I think it is easier to scrap if you are working with pictures you enjoy. Also, a little distance can do wonders for fixing a bad layout. I don't know why, but it does help me to walk away from a layout for awhile sometimes and come back to it later. Perhaps my subconscious keeps working on how to fix it or something, but if I put it aside and work on something else, I can come back in a few weeks or a few months, and tackle it again, and it goes better.

It's done, though, so I think you should just stick it in the album for awhile and work on something else. Then, if you still really hate it in 3 to 6 months, you can do it over if you want. And as someone else said, you may decide that it isn't as bad as you thought.

Like pp's, I often find if I step away or a day or two, it helps to get a fresh perspective.

That being said, oh yes. I have finished quite a few layouts that I am not happy with. I figure 1) I am not trying to get published, so I need to get over it. 2) Like keddypea said, better scrapped than in a box somewhere. 3) If all my layouts were fabulous, then none of them would be, kwim?

I've done it but if I find that I still really hate it after letting the finished layout sit for a while I'm quite ok with binning it and starting again. A wise pea once said if it is a layout that makes you want to tell people to just turn the page in your album and not look at it, it doesn't belong in your album and it's ok to get rid of it.

When I start to really struggle on a page, I set it aside and come back to it later. If it still doesn't work out or if I hate it when I'm done, I salvage what I can from the page and try again.

But good for you pushing through and getting it done!!

Loved hearing that I'm not the only one who ends up with something they're not entirely 100% about. In todays light it's looking better, though I still won't be bothered taking a picture of it or putting it on display. I do like the photos in general, the original ones just didn't match very well so I picked new ones that matched. I think in the end I will like it enough to keep it around, at least I'm hoping so, because I did this whole crazy ruffle thing along one side and I used a lot of paper and fabrics and I don't want to throw it out!

I have. Often I don't hate it as much as I did while I was making it when I look at it with fresh eyes. But, I have several that I am not particularly proud of! I decided not to redo them...many of them are new products or techniques or a challenge that brought me out of my comfort zone. I'm okay with it

Thankfully, I've only had that happen once or twice in 13 years of scrapping! I had one in particular I remember that I didn't like and now when I see a picture I took of it, I like it but at the time, I hated it and I threw it away. I refuse to put anything in an album that I don't LOVE. Not like...LOVE. I will start over before I do. I heard someone say today on Paperclipping that she has lots of layouts she doesn't like in her albums and I felt sad just hearing that because I am so OCD I would not be happy with looking through the album if I didn't like the layouts. I guess some people are more easy going than me. Actually I know for sure they are!

I just finished one! It had been nagging me and staring at me for days. I just finished it to be done with it and not look at it anymore. I do live by the better done and in my album than not mantra of I would notmhave finished it. Once I finished that disaster, things went so smoothly and quickly on all the other stuff I worked on today!

All the time!

Most recently it was a layout I made using the Glitz Wild & Free collection. I bought it specifically to make this page and it just doesn't work like I wanted it to. I put it in my album to try to convince myself that it's ok but it really isn't and I will be remaking it eventually. Nothing like buying product and then throwing it all away.

That happened last night. I HATE it, but I'm not going to redo it. It's done, and I will move on. The next one I will most likely really like. There are just a few layouts in my albums that I hate, but that just only helps me like the others more - if that makes sense.

Yes! I can totally relate. Usually when I leave it for a while and come back, it isn't as bad as I remembered even if I still don't love it. On the very rare occasion, I have redone a few.

Oh indeed I have been in that place before. I've sometimes thought as I am working on it, "I don't like the looks of this", yet I keep going, hoping I can make it better, and in the end I still am not happy with it. Sometimes I shove it in the album and other times I re-do it at a later time. It is a pretty frustrating feeling, especially when you know how good it feels when a layout comes together beautifully and you get giddy as it is coming together.

oh yes. I sure have. I mean I dislike layouts from my early days, but that's simply because I was a beginner and learning, and it was back in the day of cutting everything with decorative edge scissors!
But not including that kind of stuff, yes I sure have. Generally those layouts have been for a challenge or something, like for an online crop and I'm rushing or trying to use something I don't really want to.
Oddly enough, they are quite often using the colour purple too!

I have never taken a layout apart. I fully appreciate the change in scrapping styles and realize that in itself is not a reason to hate a layout or take it apart. BUT...I have one double page layout I really hate. The color combination is AWFUL and makes the photos look worse. I hated it from the start and don't know what I was thinking when I made it. I hate it every time I look at it. This thread has given me the "okay" to re-do it.

yep! I've had a LO from hell that just was so not me. The reason? I tried to imitate a style that was hip, trendy, and 'in' at the time. I hate that page! Never uploaded it either. It's in my scrapbook as a reminder to stay true to what I like even if it's not the current 'it' style, because that's the only way I enjoy this hobby.
