I have noticed, in speaking with friends and seeing online, that the act of cooking on a grill is called different things. Maybe based on geography?

Where I am, you grill out and BBQ is the sauce you put upon the chicken. (LOL)

How about you? Now that spring has sprung, what do you do?

We don't "grill out," we just grill. There are occasions we Bbq. They are pretty interchangeable here.

We just "grill", not "grill out". Seems to me that "grill out" implies that you also "grill in" and that would be impossible. lol. At least with the type of grill we have. Unless we count the George Foreman.

Anyway, we "grill" and we put BBQ sauce on meat. Also, we might be "invited to a barbeque" which means going to someone else's house to eat outside, and they're doing the "grilling". lol

We grill.

We do not grill out.

We do not BBQ.

You can cook lots of things in lots of ways on a grill. BBQ is one of the ways you can cook on a grill.

So far it seems like grilling (or grilling out) along with bbq sauce is a southern thing (based on locations in answers.)

That is what I noticed with my friends too.

Aussie here - we barbeque. Never here the term "grill out" here unless we are watching it on an American tv show.

Of course most Aussies in our usual shortening of names style call it - putting chicken/snags/steak on the barbie or having a barbie

If someone invites me over for a BBQ I expect food seasoned with bbq sauce. If someone says we are grilling or cooking out I often ask what they are grilling (to bring a complimentary side vs being nosy). Grilling good be any sort of marinade, dry rub, sauceless food.

Grilling out does imply outdoors but I have a couple of ways of grilling indoors from my old time George Forman to actual indoor grills.

In Eastern NC, we grill. We do have BBQs, but that is when we BBQ a pig on a big smoker. The sauce is just vinegar, spices, and hot peppers.

A barbecue is something you have or are invited to, at which food is cooked on the grill.

We smoke on the smoker or we cook out on the grill.

And now that we live in Texas, barbeque refers to how a meat is cooked, not whether it has sauce on it or not. In Illinois, it meant that it had sauce on it.

We grill, BBQ and smoke our meat. 'There's no difference between grilling and barbecuing but smoking is a totally different beast that requires lots of patience and begins many hours before the BBQ.

BBQ doesn't always mean adding sauce to us. We have lots of BBQ restaurants here and we say let's go to ____ and get some BBQ which may mean with or without sauce depending on how well they grill it.

It's still winter here. I can't wait for nice weather, but we still have a ways to go in sw PA!

We grill. We don't say bbq but we occasionally put bbq sauce on chicken. We usually say "do you want grill the chicken". If we were going to a bbq we would think we were having bbq chicken. We don't use the term "bbq" to mean grill. But I have heard it used that way before.

We also say "cook out". After reading what everyone says, it's hard to remember what we say! I had to ask my 14 yr. old.

I grill this, I grill that. I don't grill out. If I have company, I let them know I'm grilling this or that. And I rarely (like once every 5 years) eat something barbecued (which to me means BBQ sauce), I don't make it at home
