We are going to Bar Harbor for the first time and staying right next to Acadia Natl. Park (our hotel has a trail that leads into it )

2 kids 7 and 12 who like to hike but we also enjoy specific outings.

What are your favorite things to do or places to eat? We will have a car with us.

TIA,

There's a schooner--the Margaret Todd that docks in front of the Bar Harbor Inn. We loved going out on it.

We had a great time there a few years ago. We camped close to Acadia Park. Are you taking or hiring bikes? We really enjoyed cycling through the park. Some of the hills were tough (pulling DS in a child trailer) but well worth it.
We also went on a whale watching trip. Saw puffins and seals too- very cool
When the tide was out my kids loved looking for crabs and starfish in the rock pools.
Hope you have fun!

My brother has a house outside Bar Harbor and we go up every September. Drive up Cadilac mountain, see Thunder hole. There are lots of cool shops in Bar Harbor. If you drive south of the park there is a beautiful lighthouse.

Jordan Pond House is a famous Bar Harbor restaurant. I haven't been there is many years, but its worth checking out! Acadia is beautiful! In the summer, the cruise ships stop in Bar Harbor. There are lots of shops and restaurants when you are ready to give up nature for the day.

Geddy's in Bar Harbor. Great casual place right by The wharf on Main Street. Love their Mucho Nacho, burgers. We live in Camden,Maine for 10 years and we always loved it. Have a great time.

our favorite lobster house was Beals down the south end of the island.

Walk across to Bar Island at low tide!

I agree about the Jordan Pond house. You can also take a horse and carriage ride there.

Another vote for Geddy's. We lived an hour from Bar Harbor and loved our day trips.

Sea wall is nearby, it's less frequented by tourists but still pretty. If you drive a little back towards Trenton, there are a couple of lobster pounds and you can have a great seafood dinner.

Bill and Ben's Ice Cream Emporium has a huge selection of candy and they make their ice cream right there (at least they did when I worked there years ago) and you can always sample the lobster ice cream

Whale watches are definitely fun if you've never done that kind of thing. When the tide goes out, you can walk from the downtown area to an adjacent island and explore the trails.

The view from Cadillac Mountain is breathtaking. Thunder Hole was neat, but never really active or booming unless a storm had just blown through. Sand Beach is another stop on the park loop but the water is so cold! It was always a big deal for our kids because there are very few sandy beaches on the Maine coast above the southern points.

There's another great ice cream shop tucked away further from the harbor that always had fantastic flavors. If I can remember the name I'll definitely edit. It was one of the places the president and his family came back to more than once during their stay because of the unique flavors.

Check and see if the museum at College of the Atlantic is open. So neat. Sometimes they take you on little tidepool tours. If not, there's an oceanarium on the way into town where you can handle sea cucumbers and starfish and see other local creatures.

I miss Bar Harbor terribly. I hope you have an amazing trip!

Great idea thank you so much! We have heard other people talk about Jordan pond house and the popovers, so that is definitely on my list now. Thank you for the great ideas – if anybody else has any additional great restaurant ideas that are casual and great for families please let us know. The peas always have a wealth of info!

We visited Acadia NP last summer, and there is lots to do. We went kayaking on one of the ponds, and it was so much fun. You can rent the kayaks for 2-3 hours, which was just the right amount of time. We went in the late morning before the sun got too hot.

Also, we drove out to see the famous lighthouse and got some great photos. Cadillac Mountain is a must as it is very impressive. We went in the evening, and the view was wonderful. And of course you have to have lunch at Jordan Pond and try the popovers. You can make reservations in advance, because they do get busy. Lots of folks rented bicycles, and that looked like fun.

Bar Harbor is a cute town and has lots of shops that are fun to explore. Hope you have a wonderful trip.
