I am speechless. There are so many organizations that would put donations to good use. Thank you for your time and effort, I'm sure the recipients will be thrilled.
Advantus has really left a sour taste in my mouth.

In this tough economy, they could have chosen to donate to any number of worthy causes and in the end it would have helped their image as well. What a sad and terrible waste.

Wow, how selfish and egotistical of Advantus. But how selfless and tireless were those ladies who salvaged the products, cleaned them up, repacked them, and donated them. Unbelievable that Advantus did not do that.
Besides the other points that were mentioned, what about being "green"? Throwing that stuff away is just plain wasteful.

There are so many things wrong with this , I don't know where to start! But I have to say this is very typical of a big company that have lost sight of the "people" in their business. Instead of thinking of helping someone, they thought of someone making a buck off them (by destroying the products).

wouldn't it had been more 'advantageous' to Advantus to donate this product and write it off, rather than just throw it away. OR did they plan on writing it off- but the staff was too lazy to actually complete the transaction...
so, so wrong on many levels....
I hope advantus see this, finds out the people that actually did this, and I hope they get a scalding or a butt chewing.... |

I am hoping it isn't a company policy but rather some lazy employees. Such a waste! I am so glad that it was rescued and put to good uses. Nicely done ladies! Shame on you Advantus.

I for one don't see the problem with it. The stuff belonged to Advantus, and they can do whatever they want with it including throw it away.
And about the paint. Have you ever tried to dispose of paint? It has to be completely dry before garbage collection will pick it up, so if they were disposing of it they pretty much had to squeeze it out of the tubes.
Just sayin'. | |

True, they can do whatever they want, but it's a shame that they didn't want to do something more productive with it.

I knew this was true of cans of paint, like latex paint, etc. But I didn't know about acrylic paint. Are you sure about this? If so, I guess I broke the law a few times without knowing when I threw away old bottles of MM paint. They might have had a bit left in them, but I didn't dry them out first.

I think 'destroying' or making the product defective is one of the write off factors, is it not? I know when I worked at a local mall Bath and Body Works was getting rid of a TON of stuff. We went up and did some dumpster diving and got a boatload of stuff- I still have the makeup case that has a "D" on the side in sharpie.
ITA with SDeven too. It's amazing what companies just throw away. |

I'm sure this is common practice with companies, but that does not make it right. With so many organizations that could have used these products including the paint, what a waste and what a shame... I guess that's what happens to companies when they become so big, they forget where they came from, if some one had just maybe thought about it for a second, they could have turned this into something so much more positive... I am really disappointed in this company, I guess it will make some of us think twice the next time we make a purchase, we have other choices ????

Advantus and HS are no longer a "couple", all the HS stuff is totally discontinued and basically the best they can hope for is to sell it for pennies in bulk to Tuesday Morning. It probably would have cost more to ship it home than to throw it out. It basically has no value.
Given the situation, it makes even less sense why Advantus didn't give the products away to attendees (or local volunteers, if applicable) at the Expo. This would have been the easiest route & saved the Advantus staff the task of finding a dumpster, tossing the product, then drizzling it with paint.
I don't see it as such a big todo...It's not an uncommon business practice.
IMHO this attitude epitomizes what's wrong with our society today. Just because someone else does (or has) something, doesn't make it right!

That is crazy. As an independent LSS I can see tons of things they could have done with the product. Firstly, if they can afford to throw away productm than lower your prices so everyone benefits. They could have had great PR if they gave it away at the Expo. The list goes on and on. And is just shows that most manufacturers are oblivious.

Oh my gosh! How wasteful. I know it's a business practice, but the girls group homes at my agency would have loved to have the products for their arts and crafts area.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised because I went into M's one time and got two pieces of the Harley Davidson paper that was left and went up to the counter and the cashier said, "Oh, these were supposed to be thrown away, but I'll sell them to you." I can see why she couldn't give them to me because then everyone would be asking for discontinued stuff, but why not set up a way to donate to groups who could use it? There are dozens of places that could use it and I would think the write-off would be worth it. Heck, they can write it off for full value even if it was on deep discount before they pitched it! Giving back is mega-good publicity! I am more likely to shop at a company that gives back to the community it's in than one that does not.

Lauren & her friends are the upside of this whole sorry situation. What they did may seem a bit crazy to anyone who doesn't scrap, but this stuff did have value at one time, it WAS expensive at one point. That they braved the paint mess & sacrificed sleep to recover something good from such a wantonly wasteful act is laudable. They should be proud of themselves. |

Yes from a business standpoint shipping it was probably costly. But they did have choices. Give it as gifts to the people at the crop and earn life long customers!, donate it any charity and get a nice writeoff.
And according to HS blog they are still working together.Just not like in the past. |

Advantus goes to lots of shows and does not have to ship stuff back to their office. Alot of these vendors have what are known as pods...big rolling racks that are filled at the end of the show with whatever is left over and then put on 18 wheelers and taken to the next show. Advantus did put some of their product onto these pods...I was there and saw the pods and the big "thing" after the show was that they had done this. I have been to about 15 shows over the last 2 years and never have seen this before. The company that puts the show on ALWAYS comes and asks for door prizes for the crops. They just as easily given the product away without having to do anything. Dave, the guy who was in charge of this show would have packed up things himself.
It wasn't that they did this...they were laughing and it was very funny to them to be doing this.
I wont buy from them...just my way of showing that I disaprove. Just think how this could have been handled...so much better then this. Just because other companies do this, that makes it right? I don't think so. But, just my two cents worth.

i really can't imagine why they would toss it out either? By donating it to a charity, they would be able to get a BIG tax write off - what would they gain by dumping it? NOTHING!
Plus, think of all the good will they could "buy" by donating it. That is a BIG haul of stuff! that would have made a great photo op somewhere!
When Advantus is the next big SB conglamerate going belly up, they might be looking back on poor decisions like this one! |

This is just stupid and wasteful. Hats of to those ladies who went through so much trouble in rescuing some of the items.
I really don't care whether it is 'common practice' or not (I know it is). Just because it is doesn't make it right or anything. I agree with what someone said: just because someone else does it, doesn't mean you should do it too or that it isn't wrong. Especially at a show like this there would have been tons of people who would have loved taking an item home or organizing a new charity home for a batch of items. I have a hard time understanding the person who even came up with the idea of the paint.
A close friend of mine works at a garbage disposal facility who process a lot of dumpsters from bigger companies. It's amazing what all is being thrown away!! Every once in a while he and his co-workers make a great find and take something home for themselves or friends/family. I myself have gotten two lovely Kipling handbags that way.
Such a waste. |

All the craft stores throw away the extra magazines once the new ones comes in. I asked a clerk at J's why they don't just donate to a local nursing home and was told they can't. If they are caught doing something like that, the magazine companies pull their magazines from the store. Destroying past issues is part of the contract.
And M's throwns away a lot of older supplies as well. One of my friends wanted to buy one of the $1 paper packs at M's, but when it rang up at 0.01, the cashier refused to sell it. The cashier said it was marked a penny to indicate that it either needed to be pulled from the shelves. My friend called management when she got home and the regional manager told her that the clerk was wrong. Unfortunately though they couldn't find that one paper pack because it had probably been thrown away a the end of the day.
As a side note, the regional manager held a meeting with the store managers to tell them that if product is in the store, they sell it even if it rings up at 0.01. The exception would be something recalled for lead.
I agree that it is awful.

As my mother would say, "If everyone else was jumping off a bridge, would you do it too?" Just because most companies through stuff away, doesn't make it alright.
I understand about the magazines, but wish they could somehow at least be recycled.
Regarding product- that is just shameful to through it away. Why not at least take it to a local Salvation Army Store, Value Village, or Non-Oregon GoodWill store? Most places have someone who would pick things up- not just items from Advantus, but any of the companies who ditch product? It seems to me every major company that just ditches product could hire someone(s) that could be in charge of appropriately disposing of products that the company does not need.

what a shame. not just bcause someone could use the syuff but because they were adding to the landfill with no thought about recycling.
maybe they heidi line this year bites. usually they "sell the booth" cheap. i know two stores that have bought the advantas/heidi booth at cha in the past. they just buy the whole lots for a hugely discounted price so the company doesnt have to haul it away. |
