Well I got my January CK and couldn't believe how awful it was. The pages look like something that was scrapped 10 years ago. Where did they find the paper combinations??? The whole magazine seemed geared toward beginning scrapbookers.
I renewed my subscription a couple of months ago because I felt the last 3 issues were really good. Now I am sorry I did. If they can't put out any better then that they will not be lasting too much longer.

Mine came in the mail yesterday but I haven't had a chance to look through it. Please don't let CK be heading downhill -- there's nothing left! Well, ok, there are still a couple other mags, but still . . .

I got mine and was pretty pleased with it. There were a lot of layouts with current papers (available in stores) by October Afternoon, Cosmo Cricket, Basic Grey, Collage Press, and American Crafts. I think there were definitely some layouts that would be easy for beginners to copy, but for the most part I thought there was a very nice, wide range of styles and skill levels.

I got mine a couple of days ago and I'm liking it. I have about 10 pages flagged, so far, and I honestly don't expect to see every single issue as being outstanding. I find myself missing the people who have left recently. There were a couple of layouts that were way outside of my comfort zone - one of them using real Legos and one using a piece of dyed-with-a-stamp-pad cheesecloth....both just too "out there" for me! One thing I did notice....seems like they are really trying to get people to visit their website, lots of "come to our website and download this" kind of thing. Makes me wonder if they might end up being an online magazine subscription some day....sure hope not because I like to sit in my favorite chair and read something I can hold in my hands! Maybe they count website visitors and can set their advertising rates based on how many hits they get? I'm liking this issue though and sure hope they manage to stay in business. I would hate to lose any more scrapbook magazines.

I havent seen it yet, but always look forward to seeing the newest issue. And if by chance, it isnt jam packed with LO's that suit my style in particular, I am not going to shun the company... this is a form of art and I know that each persons "taste" can vary GREATLY! One thing that we have to take into consideration (IMHO) is that the magazine (and its inside people) are not always the ones that create the LOs...you never know, someone that is reading this thread right now may have contributed.

Since I don't like many of the current 'trends', I was pleased to see some more diverse LOs featured. It was also refreshing to see some new faces. I get tired of seeing the same styles and the same people in EVERY issue!! |

i'm with you tennisloon. i totally understand that everyone has their own unique tastes but it just seemed somewhat elementary for a magazine and there wasn't really anything in there that wowed me. which i kind of feel that if you're published in a mag, it should have a bit of a wow factor. although, after reading all of these replies i might open it up and give it a second glance. |

I received mine yesterday and started to look at it today. I'm about half-way through it and so far I like it. I really like the column for the fast 4x6 photos layouts. That will be a nice feature. It also looks like they are starting to incorporate "simple scrapbooks" in this as well. So, I'm happy with it.

I absolutely agree with the OP. YUCK. Normally, while skimming through it (walking from the mailbox back to the house) I'll think, "Oh man, I can't wait to sit down and really look at this page by page." Well, skimming it, I was skeptical and once I gave it a good once-over, not one page dog-eared...

I really liked it. Didn't miss the same old same old people. If you look back over the years it has continually changed. I started reading it in 2000. In the last few years though I think it got stale. Personally, I liked what I am seeing and enjoying the new changes.

I finished reading through it since my first post and had to come back and say I flagged 17 pages! That's alot for me...some of them are layouts, some of them a technique idea I don't want to forget and one is a download at their website (inventory sheets). I really liked this issue and I like the new columns too. Jennifer L, I saw your layout, it caught my eye right away! Page 42, My Best Buds and what a clever title...such pretty pictures and great colors. I liked alot of layouts in this issue and yours was one of them! Congrats on being published in CK.

I knew Ali's column was done, but I was exceedingly disappointed to see that Dear Lizzy was gone too. There was very little that snagged my interest, no dog-eared pages, but I won't give up on it yet. Even when the magazine was full of columns I did enjoy, there were always issues that were less interesting, so I'm not going to give up on it yet.

I actually really really liked it. I mean alot. I know some of the old columns were favorites of many, but they were never my style. So i was happy to see some new things.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 4x6 column. Can I tell you how much I hate cropping photos??
CK seems to have evolved into part classic CK and part old Scrapbooks ETC...and I think that is a good thing. The layouts were inspiring, in that they made you want to scrap, dig through your stash, or even seek out new product. I think it was a good issue.
I do long for a magazine with more detailed layouts in it...I guess there is Somerset Studios, last I looked, last year, they still were not pubbing that many layouts. I may have to check it out again.
And YAY Jen! The moment I saw the blurp about being a Buffy fan I knew it was you. You also made me want to scrap my dh's garden photos. You totally rock getting pubbed and getting Buffy mentioned. |

I got mine yesterday and I've already read the entire thing. It had its bad points and its good points. There were several layouts I really liked. But I have to agree that there were several really BAD layouts in there that left me shaking my head. One was my a contributor that works for the magazine and I'm sure she is a nice person - but she has no business being published. Her work just doesn't measure up to the level it should be at. It doesn't follow basic design principles. If a layout doesn't have that WOW factor, I wish they would leave it out. I was perplexed by many of their choices. One thing I've always loved about Scrapbooks, etc. is that they seem to have better taste in choosing layouts.
I did not like it that they used up so much space for the "step by step" instructions. I think that's what seemed "beginnerish" to so many people. I did like the journaling ideas, the page makeover, the 4x6 column and part of the sketches column.
My favorite part was the article on heat embossing. That might seem beginnerish to some but I enjoyed seeing the samples. It will be interesting to see where they go from here.

I haven't gotten mine yet, and come to think of it, didn't get a december issue! I have read here and some other mb's that this issue wasn't all that.
The decline of all the sbooking magazines makes me sad--when I was a newbie, they really helped me step up the quality of my work, and I really enjoyed them. Now, I wonder why i spend my money on the mags. Just not what they used to be. Another sign of the economy, I guess.

I really enjoyed what I have seen of it (kinda scanned though it before bed last night)
Although I am not a beginner, I love seeing all the technique instruction. I mean if I just wanted to see layouts I would just come to the gallery here and see them for free.
I was pleased with the variety of information it includes.
I am glad Jennifer McGuire is still on board with her article (I always love seeing what she does!)
I am not sure if this was in Dec issue but I just LOVE the issue index on page 118.....it is nice to be able to scan there for something you know you saw than having to thumb through page by page!
I hope CK continues on this path...it seems to work for me! |

I read so far that Dear Lizzy is gone (of course with Ali's column, Lisa's part and the Becky sketches) and Jennifer McGuire's column is still in it, but what of monthly to-dos by Amanda Probst, Creative spaces and Mandy's challenge?
I should have gotten my issue last week, but it's still not here (probably the Dutch mail is going mad with Christmas cards, as usual...), so I really want to know what is still there and which new things are in the mag! All your posts made me curious!

I've just started looking at CK mag and was liking what I've been seeing. I am a little put off by the attitude of the "beginner stuff" though. I am a beginner, but tring some advanced stuff every now and then. If a person is going to improve how can they if it is all above their heads.
I am a teacher and the magazine layout is good, because it crosses all sectors. I did notice the Two Peas also and am excited to see them actively out their showing all their talents (don't get me wrong the site Rocks, but in a mag is super too). As a teacher or professor. one is encouraged to publish or research and discuss with otherrs their knowledge: it's the same in a way that the Two Peas are getting published.
So before some of you pooh pooh something, think of the bigger picture. Who is this mag trying to reach-a large group! |
