what does that mean?
no new BG? or they just aren't exhibiting?
too tired to crank out 2-3 more lines this time around? (I just don't see how all these companies can continue to crank out new-new-new all the time)
Can a design team member elaborate?.....I'll just sit here and quietly panic

From everything I've read, they aren't going to "save the retailers money." Rather then putting their time, effort and money into traveling to CHA and creating a booth, they are passing discounts on to the retailers. They are still doing releases, I think 4.
It did make me wonder about the state of the company, but they are reassuring everyone that they are doing well and it is not a reflection of their current financial state, but a reflection of the economy's effect on retailers. |

Super idea!
Hope it works out well for retailers, consumers and BG.

It's not like they need the publicity...BG is probably one of the best known names in scrapbooking...and scrapbooking is fast falling out of the *it* favor at CHA. Why should they attend? It's incredibly expensive and time consuming and *not* attending just may generate more buzz for them than if they went.
CHA organizers better fix this free fall...the times they are a changin'. |

I saw that! Wondered what I've been missing out on while I've been otu of the loop!
I took it to be more along the lines of what SDeven said- it's about the downfall of scrapping/CHA *not* BG as a company. Scrapping just isn't the money machine it once was, they're probably taking a hard look at their bottom line and don't see CHA as a sound investment. After all, how many times have we read complaints about how CHA is filled with DT members who won't be buying etc.?

I can confirm that Basic Grey is NOT going to CHA (it was in an email they sent out and not on their web site).
They have also said that they have four new lines coming out this year and will debut them all online on July 1 (tomorrow!!). |

The sad thing is, CHA used to be some exclusive event for store owners. Now everyone and their brother can get in and see everything.
The manufacturers also had exclusive deals for the stores that attended (ie free shipping discounts, BOGO offers etc). Now they offer those to the stores who can't make it as well as the ones who do. So stores have to pay a fee to 'join' the CHA 'club' but they don't really get anything except a ticket to the show. And even now, they don't get that as they have to pay an additional fee to get into the show itself.
So rather than scrapbooking falling out of favor with CHA its the other way around. My LSS owner said it was anywhere from $800-1000 for her to go to the show. By the time she got airfare, hotel etc and then food it was a lot of money. As the summer show got smaller, she stopped going. Last year was the first year she didn't go and it didn't hurt her at all.

Based on the amount of paperwork I had to fill out to get press credentials (I write for Scrapbook Update and not just my own blog) for the upcoming show, I don't think that everyone and their brother can really get in.
Didn't they put in a rule a year or two ago limiting the number of "extras" a retailer could bring? |

I never attended a summer show when I had my store, but I treated myself to the winter CHA as a reward for the 70+ hour weeks and the risk of our entire retirement fund. It was very expensive to attend but about 2 years after I opened my store everyone and their dog thought they could have stores as well and it was important to be the first to bring in new products. There were some deals, but I found the marketing classes and contacts I made with owners in other areas to be a huge benefit too. I was at the first CHA when it was still called HIA where scrapbooking was finally introduced as it's own catagory... that tells you how long ago I did things... 12 years now when I opened the store. I'm sad to hear that CHA isn't so grand and fun as it once was. On a side question - if scrapbooking isn't holding it's own even at the CHA level, where do you think those old scrapbooking monies are now being spent? A majority of my clientele, at least the portion of my customers who were the serious financial supporters, were in a financial situation that the recession hasn't really effected them. Our town is 5 hospitals, 1 major state university, and 3 other colleges, so we have not had layoffs, etc. So.... I thought maybe beading was taking money away, but I really don't bump into many serious beaders in my day to day life... knitting maybe? I think one reason scrapbook stores had a hard time staying viable was that in the general retail world our products were such small ticket... papers at .50 to 1.00, stickers the same... whereas a quilt store sells fabric for several (often many) dollars a yard, and patterns are several dollars, and then throw in the cost of a good quality sewing machine, etc. I think the products couldn't generate the needed price per sq ft cost of overhead for the most part. Anyway, I guess I am just still surprised that the industry would blow out or waaay down - everyone still has photos.

Sassafras is doing the same thing. Skipping the summer show this year and passing the savings on to us. |

I, too, joined CHA when it was still HIA. Wish it had stayed that way. There was so much criteria we had to supply to become a member. You have to keep in mind that the shows are supposed to be educational for the retailer but it got to be difficult for the retailer to take part in alot of the education plus make and takes because of all the tagalongs who attended just to be the first to see what was new. We have a friend who designs paper for K&Company who told us they had to start limiting makentakes to one person per store because some stores had 10 and more people attending the show.
CHA turned a lot of retailers off when they started doing the show following CHA. It was a way to make more money when they saw how many non retailers wanted to attend the show.
The show itself is fantastic. I miss the smell of the new paper and products and meeting and greeting the manufacturers but I don't miss the expense.

My comment explained. Everyone and their brother. Up until the last show stores had unlimited tickets. A store owner here is a friend of mine. She regularly let's it 8-10 people and it seems this is the norm. Take your friends so they can see the new stuff and help you get free products. Whatever we got we had to hand over. Again we found this to be the norm since a lot of the people we talked too weren't owners or employees but friends.
So now they've implemented the $25 per person rule and that did cut down on traffic I'm told BUT the owner I'm taking about basically sold the passes. Anyone who wanted to pay the $25 to her she got them a pass.
So yes, you might have had to turn in a lot of paperwork but so did everyone else. It doesn't stop people from getting in.
