Ugh. I have a ton of scraps. Two bags full. I always tell myself "go through you're scraps, use them up". And I will all though not enough. Then I feel guilty about throwing them out. Some are years old. I always feel like I'm such a horrible person when I toss a few pieces into the trash. Sometimes I push it in as far as it will go so I don't have to see it starring back at me.
What do you ladies do to get rid of scraps?

I know what you mean...it used to drive me crazy to throw them out.
Well, I have challenged myself to create atleast one card each week this year and bundle them up as a Christmas gift to my MIL...as for the scraps, I simply punch small shapes {ie: hearts, butterflies, etc} from them and use them on the cards. Whatever is left...I trash. Its kind of like I am multitasking...lol!!!

For me, the trick is to have them organized in a way that is easy to go through and find what you need. I have mine in plastic 12 x 12 trays, sorted by color. They are set up right behind my desk, so I just have to turn around, pull out the color I need, and go through it. It has helped me so much. Most times I go through my scraps before going through the rest of my paper collection.
I do still have too much. I am getting to where I will discard the smaller scraps unless it's a paper I absolutely love. |

Mine are a mess. I really need to go through them (and I am sure that many of them are years old!)
I do sometimes bundle a whole heap of my half used alphas, scraps and other bits and give them to another scrapper friend who has kids...they like that kind of stuff.
As I am training to be a teacher though, I am thinking they would be good to take into the classroom with me!
In fact....if you can....I do suggest taking them into a school because often (well I know here in Australia) they are on tight budgets for things like craft supplies and the kids love cutting & pasting! |

I just recently went through all my scraps. I kept a fraction of what I had. What I have left is much more manageable and I know I'll actually use them. The rest looked very dated and just didn't appeal to me anymore. Why take up room with what I know I won't use? It's OK to throw stuff away. |

I cut all move down to ATC size, 4.25x5.5 and 6x6
Then made stacks and sold them on ETSY. They went quickly.
People still want them. They're also easier to store if you trim them down and stack them. |

I went through mine a few weeks ago and got rid of maybe 70% of what I had, I was suprised at not only the sheer amount of scraps I had but also some of the sizes of them, seriously when am I ever going to use 50 half inch scraps?
I gave them to my kids and let them go nuts with some glue. I now have a rule if I can't use it for stamping or on a card than it has to go, no point in having little odd shaped off cuts and slivers of paper hanging around for years again. |

I've been going through mine and running them through the Cameo to cut butterflies. (I'm on a butterfly kick at the moment!) I'm planning to get some more basic shapes, and build up a nice little stash of precut embellies to have ready to go. You could do the same thing with punches, too. |

Good ideas ladies! I've got to try some of them. But I think I also need to just throw some out. I know I won't ever use most of it. Not with the hundreds (maybe thousands) other sheets I have.

i use to do activities in a retirement home. my residents loved scrapbooking but we were on a tight budget. we were given some scraps and the residents loved being able to make their own cards and stuff. i don't know if you want to just give them away-maybe the older stuff, but if you are willing i bet a place like that would appreciate them! |

Thanks for reminding me that I need to sort through my scraps again.
Here is what I do:
I trim all scraps into 6x6 and 4x6. Any pieces left that I love (polka dots, wood toned, notebook typea) I punch into buttons/butterflies, ect. I also use 6x3 pieces to border punch for small borders for cards.
All of my scraps are then sorted by color and then put into the plastic CD holders from Walmart.
I go to my scraps to make cards, embellishments, titles with my Cricut...
When I get bored with my scraps, I do a scrap exchange with my cardmaker friends.
Hope that helps! |

I don't like getting rid of scraps either so I have them in page protectors (and for brown/tan/cream, a larger container). Eight of these are sorted by color, and then I have four more of multi-color scraps sorted more or less by theme.
When I want to do a project that involves using a smaller sheet of paper, I look in the scrap bags first, and then I look at those larger pieces of paper that I've already cut, second. (That way, what's left will still be less.) |

I didn't realize so many people organized by color. Maybe I need to start doing that. I have zero (well not true) I have maybe 5% organization. Which isn't a lot. I really need to go through my paper. And while organizing it does sound good I think most of it just needs to go. Maybe it's like that closet rule, if you haven't worn it/used it in a year get rid of it. I can go through and find larger pieces and figure out how to save them but most has just gotta go.

At Michael's I bought a 10-pack of the 12.5 x 12.5 large plastic storage envelopes. (The ones that you could store maybe 10 completed LOs in.)
I labeled each one by color:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Purple (I didn't see that much a difference between Indigo and Violet, I guess!)
Black & White
Silver + Gold
Brown & Tan
Patterned
Then I went through my scrap drawer, tossed the smaller scraps, then organized the rest by color.
I store the plastic envelopes in a file container I bought at Target (had to remove the lid because it was too tall to close) and the whole thing slides into my Expedit.
I find I use my scraps a ton more now. But, honestly, I didn't have an overwhelming amount to begin with.

I have had mine in the white plaatic 3 drawer sets for years. I have them by color. I put the print & cardstock in the same drawers. I always use them. I have tried different ways to store them but this is the best. The drawers come out so I can take one to the table when I am working .

If it's larger then 6x8 I stays in the paper area. All other scraps I cut s to 6x6 or 4x5.25 (for cards) if it's smaller then that I toss it. I don't have the energy or space to deal with it. If I love the paper I'll buy 2 sheets, but I rarely use it on more then 1-2 layouts. |

I have been making some projects lately and when I'm done I use my martha Stewart butterfly punch and punch butterflies out of the scraps to use in my Project Life and on cards. I am making some cute cards using my circle punch and butterflies punched from scraps right now.
I use a ton of my scraps for projects in my classroom too.
I have 2 stackable storage things that each have 5 drawers (each unit is only about 15 inches high) and I store my scraps by color. I find that I use them a ton because there is a manageable amount and they are EASY to access.

I'm just going to have my mom take the kids for awhile then I'm purging. I'm just going to get rid of paper. I'm thinking throw out 2/3 of it and keep the rest. Because I've got TONS of paper I haven't even used. But I think there are a few of us on these boards that have the same problem.
But I am getting lots of ideas from you all! I wish I was more organized.

I am probably going to be no help at all.. Mine are filed by color, and I just printed a bunch of paper piecing patterns from different websites, that are for future pages I have in mind, I am using up alot of scraps, I have not used any new sheets of paper... I still Paper piece the old fashioned way, with a light box...lol Even though I have a cricut, I still love cutting pieces by hand... |

Sorting through my scraps is on the short list of things to do in my scraproom. I have a 12x12 box of scraps. I love the idea of trimming them to standard workable sizes. My plan is to make cards, tags & other types of embellishments with a deadline. At the end of the deadline, I am going to toss what's left. I figure if they were overlooked this many times, I am really not going to use them.
