Fascinating.
I wish I could have slowed it down to absorb the data.
I question the idea that it is a growing hobby though, when all signs (closing stores, closing manufacturers) seem to point to the fact that it is shrinking (I don't think it is going away, but growing?) |

It would be interesting to know what percentage is digi and what percentage traditional.....also the definition of scrapbooking can be different to many. Some do what we do, others just make notes on their pics. I find the whole think fascinating..... | |

Yep, sadly it's a new video with old statistics.
The numbers are taken from the Scrapbooking in America series, which CK ran annually for quite some time. It started in 2001/2002 and the last one I can find online was the 2007 study, published in 2008. These numbers look to be accurate for about 2004, a summary of which can be found here.
In 2007, the industry was still growing, and the full report on that is here.
2008 was when things took a financial downturn across the board, and I can't find anything about a Scrapbooking in America study from 2008 to the present... so either it's more hidden or it was deemed less important/useful once the market started to crash? I do wonder if you did the same survey today if there would still be more scrapbookers than golfers. It's only crossed my mind because they chose that statistic for the video. With golf you would have one major outlay for equipment at the beginning, and then you *could* keep spending (lessons, club memberships, upgrading your gear, etc) but in theory you could also pretty much stop your spending (play at free/cheap locations, no paid coaching, stick with the same gear). You're not exactly cutting up the golf club and glueing it to something else, like paper. If a household had to cut spending, it seems sensible that sport and fitness activities *could* be cheaper than a purely consumable hobby like crafting. (I know by hanging out here we are most likely the types of scrappers who could carry on for quite some time using just what we have... but we are consuming what we've bought if we're paper scrappers. Digi girls, you have the golf club of scrapping supplies, it would seem!)
The other thing I think might be interesting with current factors is if they started to focus on 'growth' again, because financial growth is often labelled in a way that is somewhat misleading. If you have a big crash one quarter but then the next quarter you grow just a tiny tiny bit on top of that crash, that is classified as growth - but you're still nowhere near where you were before the crash. It's growth - not recovery. If we've hit a point where most of the companies who were not profitable have shut their doors and the industry has realigned to a point where it's possible to maintain, is there the potential for this year to be labelled as growth even though it's nothing like a recover to the 2007 statistics? I don't know... but my anecdotal evidence would tell me that 2012 has been a more stable year for the industry than several in the past - but the trade show floor would tell you in an instant that it's nothing like 2007. Of course, things looked inflated at that point because those statistics were so high. In 2007 you could convince many a bank to give you a loan for this high-growth, highly profitable industry. I think the result would be very different if you approached a bank for the same loan today. The last five years have changed so very much about business as a whole, and that has included this industry along for the whole ride.

I was coming here to say that I remember reading somewhere that those figures were considered to be mythical even in 2005-2006. I guess they included people putting their photos in albums but not really spending much time and definitely not more than a few dollars per year on supplies.
Of course, when trying to convince banks and investors, it's good to have great numbers to show them.
