Is there a way to use papere that is larger than the embossing folders themselves and still get a good impression? I tried it last night and where the edge of the folder has no design, it flattens out the embossed part of the paper I am working on. Hints?

The only thing I've ever seen done was Tim Holtz embossing a center area on a strip of paper that was longer than the folder itself. What he did was to cut a slit in the fold of his embossing folder so he could slide the extra paper through that slit (the other end just hung off the folder on the bottom). He then ran the embossing folder, strips hanging out on either end through his machine. The middle of the strip ended up embossed.

But if you are asking how to use a 4x6inch folder to emboss a 12x12 sheet of paper...not sure that can be done unless you'd somehow emboss by hand with paper on top of your folder and move the folder around underneath? Not sure how to do that, though.

In my experience, the edges of the embossing folder always imprint and leave a rectangle shape if the paper extends that far. I tend to emboss and then cut our my piece and mount it on the face of a card/matt or whatever.

Perhaps another Pea will have an answer? If not, this might also be a question that you could get answered over on the cardmaking forums of Splitcoaststampers. Tons of creative techniques useful in cardmaking over there!

has anyone tried re-running it with the actual design and see if it corrects the problem? or, maybe it's not AS noticeable.

It always leaves a line. I have done a section aligned it and it still left a line crease. In theory Tim Holtz's suggestion should work. I have done something similar with Nestabilities (stamped image is larger than die cut)

Interesting idea with the slit in the folder, by any chance did you see a video on that? I'll have to go looking

I'm not embossing 12x12 but it was longer than the folder itself. I was able to match up the pattern perfectly but frustrated by the line the edge left.

You could try embossing using a rolling pin and not the machine. I would think you might have a little more control and not leave such a distinct edge.

Hey, Cherene! I think I found a video for you that might be helpful. I was hunting for a TH video and came across this. She uses a shim to change up the where the pressure hits in the embossing folder and it eliminates the edges I dislike. Go figure!

No matter how hard I tried never got the right look, either the two embossed areas did not align up or one side would flatten a little. I am planning to cut all of the embossing folders like TH. Either sizzix or cuttlebug are having some of their new embossing folders with the cut area.

I was at JoAnns this morning and saw the new embossing folders with the slit in the end. It's all making more sense in my poor confused mind
