...because M's is selling some pattern paper stacks in that size (and not in addition to 12 by 12, exclusively 8.5 by 11) and only sells packs of cardstock (except white and black) in that size now.
I'm not sure how they expect anyone to scrap 8.5 by 11 if they don't sell 8.5 by 11 albums...

I don't know, but my M's has quite a few 8.5x11 albums, including some new binders like the AC ones. I like smaller books myself because the 12x12's are just so hard to hold and look at.

I think 8.5x11 has always been around, I recall seeing it in all the magazines on a regular basis. Maybe while at M's you didn't notice it before because you primarily don't scrap in that size
Even though I don't typically craft outside of 12x12, I think it's neat that manufacturers offer different sized papers. Like Prima for example offers that "A____" size paper.

I know that not all M's get the same papers--so you might have seen some 8.5x11 pads with no 12x12 counterparts simply because that store didn't get the 12x12 pads of that line. That's just speculation, of course, but it's possible. I do know for sure that they sell 12x12 packs of cardstock on their website in addition to the 8.5x11 packs, and some stores do have the 12x12 packs, because it's been discussed here before by people looking for the Recollections brand kraft cardstock in 12x12.
I personally wouldn't mind if 8.5x11 gained some momentum again, because that's all I scrap, and it would be awesome to have even more inspiration and sketches for that size! But I don't think it's necessarily a "trend". It's just an alternative! |

That.
I started scrapping in 1999. With 12x12. About 3 yrs. later, I began scrapping in 8.5 x 11. And a few months later in 11 x 8.5.
Those are now my favorite sizes. I still scrap 12x12 if I have an event w/ lots of photos. But much prefer 8.5 x 11 either vertical or horizontal.
As the albums, I have been known to mix sizes in 12x12 albums. I got the idea here, from Pea1 herself.

I've been scrapping 8.5x11 for at least 17 years. They didn't used to make 12x12 papers or albums.
I don't think it's a new trend. The smaller paper being sold is good for card making because each sheet cut in half is perfect A2 card size

I started out 10 or so years ago doing 8x10 albums. It took me a few years to go to 12x12 and I've never looked back. But then again I take tons of pictures so maybe I do the bigger size out of necessity. |

I started out that size, switched to 12x12 in 2001 and switched back to 8.5x11 last year. The reason is two fold for me. First, I have no room to store anymore 12x12 albums. They are too big. Second, I can get scrapping done alot faster when I have smaller space to scrap. I am still scraping my kids' baby pics and I can knock out 15 nice pages in the same time frame I can only do half as many 12x12. Less space, and pages are just as nice.
I think people are returning to 8.5 x 11 because it is a standard size and easier to store. I recall when Becky Higgins only scrapped 8.5x11; I don't know that she ever really did 12x12. |
My choice is to not take it personally - people have opinions. Particularly people here.-Peabay 12/29/11

I am an 8 1/2 x 11 scrapper. I started out as a 12x12 scrapper, though. I will occasionally do a 12x12 page and I find that that size is much harder for me to scrap. 8 1/2 x 11 pages come together much faster for me. I have seen those paper pads but my M's does have that size album available so it's not really an issue. I will say that even though I scrap that size I'm not usually drawn to paper pads in that size. I like having scraps that 12x12 paper will leave behind after trimmed down. |

I have been scrapping since 2004 and I never heard of scrapping on an 8.5 x 11 until I found this site last year.
I tried once to scrap 8.5 x 11 and found it very restricting. I like the extra room I can get in a 12 x 12. Plus, most decorative papers sold on the market are 12 x 12.
I do buy 8.5 x 11 cardstock to use in my printer for certain things. I have bought the decorative papers also at Walmart for $5.00. Found I can incorporate into a 12 x 12 page or cut it up for matting, strips or die cuts. |

I hope so. I would hope there would be more 8 1/2 x 11 sketches. There are so many 12x12 sketches out there and switching it up to 8 1/2 x 11 on my own doesn't come naturally to me. |

When I first started scrapping 10 years ago, most of the scrappers in my area did 8.5x11 LOs. It was the standard size then. I started with 12x12, which was just gaining momentum. I've always done 12x12, but sometimes I do an 8.5x11 and mount it on 12x12 CS. I think 12x12 became standard because it evenly fits standard 4x6 photos.

I've always scrapped 8.5x11 since I went to my first scrapbook store in 1995 and that was the only option. I didn't want to go to the bigger size and have to deal with storing the albums. I also like the rectangle size.
Now with programs like Picasa and PhotoSheet, it's easy to get a lot of pictures on one page by doing collages or easily scaling down the usual 4x6 print. |

The reason you see 8 1/2 x 11 in magazines is it is easier to fit on the magazine page. I have read articles advising how to get published and they recommend submitting 8 1/2 x 11. |

I have bought some of M's 8.5 x 11 paper, but it got cut and put on a 12 x 12 page as an accent. I suspect many scrappers are doing that.
But I do like packs of white and cream papers, and sometimes other colors for journaling. I use the scraps for stamping, matting and punching. |

I've always done 12x12 but for the last year or so I've wanted to go to the smaller size, but I can't get 8.5x11 albums. I use postbound and the only 8.5x11 album I've been able to find is a ring type with a DIY cover.
I don't like that type and don't want to have to do the covers myself. So it's 12x12 for me until someone here starts bringing in the 8.5x11 albums. It was the most popular size when I started scrapping 11 years ago, but now it's pretty much non existant in Australia. |

Like many peas, here, I started 8.5 x 11 too. More than 13 years ago! I switched over to 12x12 just because there seem to be more options. More pp's, more room for photos, sketches, etc.
The only reason I'd scrap that size now is because it may be easier to find binders in that size. Otherwise, I love scrapping 12x12. |
